Let me get this straight. If the 430 is set at 1/1 the recycle time is faster than 580 but it is putting out less light at full power than the 580 is. If the 580 is set to 1/2 power the light would be approximate to the 430 at 1/1 and the recycle time on the 580 is going to be faster since it isnt using all the power stored in the capacitor. So if I run the 580 at 1/2 power i will approximately get the light of the 430 with a faster recycle time.?! These are APPROXIMATES. So back to the original question, If I want to use a flash in freefall to get the most fill shots (with enough light to make it worth my while) I will need to buy the 580 and run it approx at 1/2 power or less(depending on my other settings) I should be able to get 30-40 shots just in freefall. correct me if I am wrong but only if I am WAY off. I was just planning on using it in low light situations (cloudy, high noon, sunset, and dark skinned students) So even with 1/8 power the flash is enough? I fly just a few feet away, 5 feet is about max. so I dont think I will need much flash. This is going WAYYYY over my head. What is a speed cycler? What is a flop? So way you all are saying is that if I want to shoot a fair amount of still during freefall I will need the 580 and run it at 1/2 to 1/4 light output to shorten up the cycle times? I could do that with the 430 but I wont get as many flash filled photos, correct? Is it just because is a newer little bit better flash (ie bright shinny) that you would go with the 580 I or II compared to the 430? Also looking at size the 580 is 25% bigger (got that from a website) and 3oz heavier. If the 580 didn't exist would the 430 be enough flash? I just found these on Craigslist, the 430 is $200 and the 580 is $300. Is the 580 worth the extra $100? If I am just using it for freefall and not much else is the 430 sufficient? Been going back and forth about which one to get for awhile. I only cut the power cord, been very successful with that. Fingers don't really have a reason to get near the blades. But obviously you haven't figured that out yet. So Saturday we were making Hippies 1000th jump and Sunman was going to follow him in for landing and I was going to follow both of them. I ended up tracking the opposite direction and was out of position. As they are turning I kept following and tried to stay close. I come out of a small left toggle turn I hit Sunman's burble. I am about 1400 ft. Canopy turns hard right about 90deg and dropped a good 200 feet. looking up I see the right side of my canopy collapsed. The rest of the ride was uneventful. Needless to say it scared the shit out of me. I have gone threw many burbles before and have never had this happen. All I can say is I'm glad it didn't happen closer to the ground!
