http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_-wbaY14GI Skip to 4:40 unless you want to see a lot of boring freefall. Anything unusual? Sure took his canopy a while to settle down...huh. My Second Tandem & Thoughts
SEREJumper replied to flytodeath's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
What were the specific skills your TI wanted you to accomplish on the jump (altitude awareness, practice ripcord touches) other than the turns that you had mentioned? Did you guys practice pulling on the ground, did you do some in the air practice as well before pull time? Practice, practice, practice. Very few do well, when the first time they are have to do something is under stress without through practice first. I've had a pretty mean looking, burly biker dude not want to help me fly the canopy, but on the ground we was back to 6'4" and a badass in front of his friends! haha. It happens, it's what you do next time that will make the difference. It may depend on your area, but if you are looking at doing AFF, be sure to check out other DZ's in your area to see if you like the vibe, service, equipment, planes, Instructors and/or facilities better before forking over some cash. Some people have options, but never go looking anywhere else because they did their "first" tandem someplace. Don't get to attached to one place before you check out the rest (if any). Well no rig will be perfect then! It's happened to the best rigs on the market at one point. 2002 Jav's have all the major freefly friendly features (tuck tab riser covers, tuck main (newer style) and reserve flaps, and bridle protection). 02 Javs risers covers are smaller than the current model Javs. 1998 or so was the big turning point for Javelins to have most of the upgrades. My Second Tandem & Thoughts
SEREJumper replied to flytodeath's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Haha, yeah probably not the best username you could have picked! But i'd keep it if you decide to continue jumping, it will keep people guessing! All in all, it sounds like you have a lot of questions about your jump that unfortunately only the instructor that went with you can answer. How much pre-jump training did you receive (time)? Did you tell them that you were doing a second tandem because you were interested in possibly doing AFF? What were the specific skills your TI wanted you to accomplish on the jump (altitude awareness, practice ripcord touches) other than the turns that you had mentioned? I totally understand that TI's are busy, but they should have debriefed you a little more if you told them you were thinking about doing AFF and what you could do better/ improve next time. Well in a nut shell, don't. I still make mistakes, everyone does. Don't beat yourself up or dwell on your past jumps, your doing this because it is fun right? Keep that in mind, you did learn something from the jump, you didn't get hurt, and will do better next time. It's normal for some people (me) and abnormal for others. After my first tandem, one of my ears did not pop and it stayed clogged and painful (gradually getting worse) for nearly 3 hours after, it actually caused some inner ear damage. I have to clear my ears after nearly every jump now because of it. If it doesn't feel right, something is probably wrong and I'd always suggest seeing a qualified doctor. Lots of people valsalva during periods of increased pressure of the inner ear (scuba diving, descending in an airplane). Most people don't have a problem when going up, it coming down that is usually painful. It's also good to note that if you have a cold or sinus issues to not jump, as you could have serious issues with your sinuses. I've always found it helpful when clearing my ears to tilt my head to one side (like try to touch an ear to my shoulder) and then valsalva as it opens up your tube that is pointing to the sky (A USAF Physiologist taught me that). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valsalva_maneuver We're not fucking flying airplanes are we, no we're flying a glorified kite with no power and it should be flown like one! - Stratostar -

Also because you can't just go down to the Quicky Mart and pick up a spare Skyvan door for .99. Those doors ain't cheap (well nothing airplane related is for that matter). Does your DZ try to guilt you if you have a cutaway?
SEREJumper replied to -SK-'s topic in General Skydiving Discussions
A lot of DZ's have their policy about that stuff in the waiver you signed. Also sounds like a DZ that I would stop spending my money at, not even ask if you were ok? C'mon. Ask him for some References of people he has bought from before in the US. If possible have him paypal money to his friend and then have his friend paypal "gift" you the money, then it is yours to keep, paypal/them can't get it back. Most foreign countries do not allow them to send paypal as a gift directly. I've sent items overseas or to friends in the US. If you don't have a good feeling about it, don't do it. Sell it to someone in the states. Paypal protects buyers not sellers, just the way it is. Ive had food results using PP, but nothing is a sure deal as cash (well, that could be questionae as well). Discovery Channel 727 Intentional Crash
SEREJumper replied to SEREJumper's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I did a search and didn't come up with anything, I did some more reading up on it, crashing a 727 is pretty cool, but I want to know more about the jumps! Anyone know more specifics/details and how it went. Anyone on DZ.com work on this project? http://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/flights/2012/10/01/inside-a-doomed-jetliner-tv-show-stages-727-crash/1606749/ "The plane took off from Mexicali airport with six people aboard. The flight plan resembled a fish hook at speeds up to 184 mph and 6,000 feet in altitude. After about 60 miles, the first officer and flight engineer parachuted out, each in tandem with a jump master. After another 20 miles, Capt. Jim Bob Slocum banked the plane into a slow right turn wide to the north. Slocum and another jump master left the cockpit 8 miles from the crash site, at 4,000 feet in altitude, when Chip Shanle, a former Navy test pilot who works for American Airlines, took over flying by remote control. Shanle then powered down the wing engines to nearly idle and finally, the tail engine to idle, to slam the plane into the desert floor with its wings level." It may be possible to get one from the manufacture. Skymaster: http://www.pisa.co.za/default.aspx?id=31 Contact page: http://www.pisa.co.za/contact.aspx Worth a shot at least! Ralph, I believe what you are referring to is a "knob guide". They were in use on AF and Navy back and seat parachute and interestedly enough, are still used today by the AF at least on bailout parachutes. See attached pics and I hope this helps. PD also says fabric testing should be done annually, but most senior riggers that are probably in your local area do not have the equipment available to do that. A lot of bigger lofts do have this equipment though. If in doubt, send it to PD for an inspection, only $25 + return shipping usually $20-30, and they will make sure it is good to go. http://www.performancedesigns.com/docs/Reserve_manual.pdf Pg.25 FABRIC TESTING STRENGTH Fabric testing should be done annually (at the appropriate repack cycle), however it is not necessary to test the fabric before the first pack job if the parachute is within one year of the date of manufacture. When the fabric is tested, note this on the packing data card. Use commercially available 1 inch (2.54 cm) wide fabric testing clamps with rubber faced jaws and appropriate scale. The scale should be calibrated at least once per year and be accurate within 1.0 lbs (0.4535 kg). Some military schools use the hand signal "4" (as in four fingers out, thumb folded in). Easy to do since all students have a 4k pull altitude during AFF style training. SEREJumper replied to patworks's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
This is the HISTORY and trivia forum, I think Pat's accomplishments are history and to be recorded here is fitting. I wouldn't mind reading more of these from some older jumpers, I know some don't like ot talk about themselves, but there is some good history in your stories/experiences! Thanks for sharing.
