I can get FIOS at 50MPS with the net as it stands now, and my DSL is all I need for the forseeable future. As far as security, the internet is the same as the real world. We sacrifice a little security for net freedom. Update your anti-virus and spyware tools and you are fine. -------------------------- Chuck Norris doesn't do push-ups, he pushes the Earth down.

If internet quarterbacking of a sophisticated business's financial decisions brings you to a really obvious paradox like this, isn't it possible that you're just plain wrong and they know something you don't? Sophisticated businesses make bone-head decisions all the time. As far as them knowing something I don't - I doubt it. CBS was not smart enough to keep Howard Stern, and they replaced him with Opie and Anthony, who had been previously fired from Infinity for a sex scandal involving St. Patrick's Cathedral in NY. I maintain that this was a political decision, not economic. -------------------------- Chuck Norris doesn't do push-ups, he pushes the Earth down.

The biggest factor in all this might be that Imus sucks. -------------------------- Chuck Norris doesn't do push-ups, he pushes the Earth down.

A key factor, and surely the largest, but not the only one. There's a meta-advertising that takes place outside of simple ad views. This becomes an affinity group of sorts and that creates a polarization. If Company-X were to join Imus after this bruhaha, it would be well publicized that they'd done so. Some people would feel a new loyalty to Company-X (out of support for imus) and others would feel a new aversion to Company-X (out of distaste for imus.) That's a very risky step for a company to take. And why? For ad views? Hardly. There are ad views available all over the planet that don't come with the polarization risks. Limbaugh has advertisers but they're of a very particular sort -- medium-sized, privately owned businesses. They have a freedom to participate in controversial projects if they choose but that pool is limited. I suspect essentially zero new qualified advertisers would appear to take the place of the missing ones unless the advertising rates were severely discounted and that would be a major financial hit. Good points, but now we'll never know for sure. But it seems that if Limbaugh and Stern can find advertisers, so could Imus. Maybe hair care products or sporting goods? -------------------------- Chuck Norris doesn't do push-ups, he pushes the Earth down.

And promptly find yourself the focus of a pig-pile and being charged for assaulting an officer in the performance of his duties... I love it when people talk about how bad-ass they'd be... There is a lengthy legal precedent, going back to 1789, whereby a defendant can claim self-defense against an agent of the government, if that act is deemed a defense against tyranny, a defense of liberty. But then again, Will still went to jail. It was a joke, by the way. -------------------------- Chuck Norris doesn't do push-ups, he pushes the Earth down.

And that would be the truth.... All these people screaming, your beef isn't with CBS or MSNBC or program directors or anybody associated with the radio stations. Your beef is with the advertisers who pulled or threatened to pull their money. That is what got Imus fired. CBS lost money. With all the publicity and controversy, the Imus ratings would have went through the roof. For every advertiser that pulled out they could have found several to bring in with the expected huge increase in listeners. The CBS decision was political, not economic. Even if it seemed political, in the long run it's about ratings, which is economic. Imus's numbers may have climbed, but I'm guessing (yes, this is just a guess) the bigwigs at both broadcasters also considered all the repercussions of keeping Imus. His numbers would have climbed. It's a lesson many have learned from Howard Stern - the more crazy his show, and the more controversy, the more listeners, and more money. Honestly, I think with Stern off on Sirius, the dipshits who used to complain about him were looking for a new radio personality to pick on. -------------------------- Chuck Norris doesn't do push-ups, he pushes the Earth down.

That's a fascinating speculation. Do you have any experience in advertising? I worked in radio and TV for several years, but not as an AD exec - no thanks. The fact is, numbers/ratings are the key factor in advertising. If there are listeners, there are advertisers who want to sell them their product. Hell, Limbaugh accused M. J. Fox of faking his illness, and his advertisers stayed put, because it made financial sense. Staying with Imus would have made financial sense, but seemed politically impossible. -------------------------- Chuck Norris doesn't do push-ups, he pushes the Earth down.

You mean like fire hoses and tear gas on peaceful civil right marches in the 60's? That went over well. What other discomfort, besides the taser, do the police use? A baton? That is well beyond 'discomfort.' Do they eat lots of garlic and then get in your face? -------------------------- Chuck Norris doesn't do push-ups, he pushes the Earth down.

He was on his way to the exit when he was stopped and tazered. If the kid is an a-hole or not, you still don't tazer a student who is working in the library. They could have very easily cuffed him, put him under arrest, and carried him to the squad car. Instead, they opted for their jackboot strategy instead. They will lose in the lawsuit. There is precedent in this case: http://www.nopepperspray.org/ -------------------------- Chuck Norris doesn't do push-ups, he pushes the Earth down.

He wasn't even breaking a law. (Mr. Bookman from Seinfeld was not there!) A cop telling you to leave is not the law. It's just some dickhead with a taser and a gun telling you to leave the library. Unless he is acting to enforce the law, his actions are not justified. There have been several cases of peaceful, non-threatening resistance where the police responded with tasers and/or pepper spray, and they LOST the lawsuits. Just google 'q-tip pepper spray' - a case of police swabbing pepper spray directly into the eyeballs of peaceful protestors and then spraying them inches from their eyes. Yes, the cops lost. Less lethal can be good, but the potential for abuse is huge. -------------------------- Chuck Norris doesn't do push-ups, he pushes the Earth down.
-
Unless he was being placed under arrest the taser use is not justified, especially to remove a student from a library. They should tie that campus cop down and taser his nutsack for a few hours. -------------------------- Chuck Norris doesn't do push-ups, he pushes the Earth down.

It can be difficult to stand after you have just been tasered. Cops using Gestapo torture tactics when they could easily 'cuff em and stuff em' is the kind of thing that makes me dislike cops. For the most part, cops are useless to me. They are never there to prevent REAL crime, and when they do show up, it's for this kind of useless bullshit, or speeding tickets, or to arrest someone for smoking a joint. I have a gun and know how to use it, and I am not a criminal, so for me, cops provide nothing. Yes, maybe. But anarchists are a big target of big brother snooping(many times for good reason, sometimes, maybe not). Maybe baseball caps, sunglasses and fake moustaches would be more acceptable? -------------------------- Chuck Norris doesn't do push-ups, he pushes the Earth down.

The jigaboo line was taken directly from a Spike Lee movie, which is why nobody is complaining about it. They'd have to criticize Spike Lee, so forget about it.... What a monumental waste of time this all is. The Bush admin is probably behind this - they must be using this national distraction to plan a really BIG fuck up. -------------------------- Chuck Norris doesn't do push-ups, he pushes the Earth down.

I disagree with what they are doing, but I could care less if they show their faces. They are probably hiding their faces for their own safety, and maybe to avoid trouble at work, etc. In the present 'big brother' state of America, with police video taping even peaceful protests for no good reason, I understand some people feeling the urge to hide their identity. If that is what is required to protect freedom, I'll accept it. -------------------------- Chuck Norris doesn't do push-ups, he pushes the Earth down.

Imus is an idiot for even addressing Sharpton and the rest. It was a joke, and if they can't take it, to freaking bad. There are lots of things he could have said that are blatantly racist, but "nappy headed ho's" isn't one of them. But shit, throw him off the air. I like O&A and R&F anyway. -------------------------- Chuck Norris doesn't do push-ups, he pushes the Earth down.
