  1. Strong requires a trade-in for the very reason of getting these old baffed-out canopies out of circulation.
  2. there will always be stupid people in the world. If this bothers you - you will probably have a very uncomfortable life. Of course then there is the cutting of the education system as we continue to lower taxes.....that probably has nothing to do with it either....
  3. I just wanted to be a fisherman....but they wouldn't let me!
  4. I ran by the donut shop again this morning. Elvis, Jim, MLK, Theo and MJ were all there having coffee... At least that is what I saw.....
  5. I do not use grapes for wine, I just buy the kits. I add one more racking than the recipe calls for but I find the process to be simpler overall.
  6. the volume and mass of our 'atmosphere' is easily calculated by relatively smart people around the world. It is a thin layer on top of a thin crust on top of a ball of mostly molten metals. The volume and mass of crap that we are dumping into that atmosphere is also easily calculated. And it is a tremendous amount. Given that we die/get sick/have major medical issues/etc from parts-per-million inhabitants/toxins in our body and we know the effects of parts-per-million inhabitants/toxins on biological systems in general - to say that we can continue to dump all this crap into our atmosphere forever and NOT affect our environment in a negative way is simply fool's talk. call it what you want - climate change, global warming, whatever. to deny it and not act before it is too late is simply burying our heads in the sand.
  7. Evelyn Drake of Quincy IL, at the convention. She was 89. I was more scared that she was. Had a crowd of 20 or so there to 'catch us' when we touched down, I do not think her feet even got a chance to touch the ground. I remember Mad Dog looking up at me on final with big eyes and that "Please TK - don't fuck up..." look on his face.
  8. And that is about the only rig out there that is approved.....but I doubt any dropzone is using them for regular AFF training. my other points stand.
  9. I made beer out there for a long time. tried all the porters, stouts, all the weird stuff. Trouble is that half the tim your friends don't want to drink that crap and neither did I. So I made simple yellow Canadian Pale Ale and Lagers. Nice smooth, and you can offer your friends a beer without them screwing up their nose at you wondering what it is and what it is supposed to taste like. Good solid beer. But I gave it up because there is too much alcohol and calories and started making wine. Even easier than beer.
  10. Adobe Bridge will allow organizing and viewing of all kinds of things. If you bought a Mac without looking into your particular needs, then you are somewhat to blame as well. The mac uses iphoto itunes imovie and idvd for media. And it works really well for 99% of the users that use it. If you need something special, then i guess that is what you need. I never used iTunes until i got a mac. You might call it 'giving in', but the fact is that all those things built in work so seamlessly, that it actually made my life easier to just use the tools that came with it rather than trying to crowbar some add-on not designed to work with it just because I want to be different. Use the Mac the way i was meant to be used. It only takes a short time to get used to it and the difference is - it all works. The more different programs you slap in there to do things just the way you want to do them ill mean that eventually you will have a machine that works just like a windows machine. full of bugs and nuances, a different tool for every step you do.
  11. and 298 is outside the TSO for pretty much every reserve parachute out there that has been listed in this thread.
  12. What experienced jumpers 'choose' for themselves versus what students jumpers have 'chosen' for them is apples and oranges. Experienced jumpers buy their own gear, make their own choices, because they have a license that allows them to do that. There is little if any liability for the dropzone, aircraft operator or whatever/whomever. It is CLEARLY obvious that the student does not decide what gear they jump - the staff, the dropzone and everyone along the line is responsible for making that 'smart' decisions for them. And that is where the 'negligence' happens if you exceed the weight limits. With an experienced jumpers, they are fully informed, trained, have made many of their own gear decisions with experience as a mitigating factor. And currently, the 'norm' in the industry is 'overloaded reserves or exceeding TSOs' That 'norm' does not exist for a student. black and white.
  13. from the Reflex owners manual: Vector SE is TSO-C23-B according to their own manual. that is 254lbs exit weight. Javelin says theirs is rated for 300lbs, yet is manufactured under C23-D, which contradicts what Reflex says above. I know for a fact that Wings will handle it, but if you call and ask, they will say NO. Smart 250 reserve - NO, you are mistaken. Optimum 253 reserve - NO, you are mistaken PD 281 reserve - NO, you are mistaken ----------------- so again, my whole point is - are you going to stand in a court of law and try to explain why you were COMPLETELY outside of the manufacturers recommendations when you are in that lawsuit? Now go look up the definition of 'gross negligence' - because that is what they will sue you for. waiver or not. I worked pretty fuckin' hard to get where i am today, and I am not going to risk it all for someone I do not even know. If that 255 guy wants to skydive bad enough, he will knock off 20-30 lbs. No different than if I want to be an astronaut bad enough, I will go back to school, get my degrees, bust my ass for 10 years in research, apply for and do whatever they tell me to do to get there. But for now, I STILL want to be an astronaut - and they are NOT going to let me.....that is MY problem, not theirs. TK
  14. Falcon 300 has nothing published on their website about the max exit weight. so saying that it "should" work, cannot cut it unless you are absolutely sure. We are not talking about what might work. We are talking about what would have to be explained in court when your student is badly injured and the manufacturer decides to 'not support you' because you decided to take some huge dude on an AFF jump. Lots of manufacturers talk about it, few actually support it if you picked up the phone and called them.
  15. Navigator 300 is rated at 289 for a student, but the 281 reserve is only rated for 281 lbs for a student 255 plus easily 30 lbs of gear puts them at 285+
  16. at 255lbs, not sure what container/reserve parachute you would be using, but I am pretty sure it is NOT TSO'd for your weight plus gear. at some point in your life, you were only 200lbs. You should very much try losing 20-30 pounds before skydiving. you are on the heavy side of max, or the max side of heavy. If you were at my dropzone, you would not be jumping. and just because they are willing to take you up, does not make it safe to do so.
  17. if you want right-wing moderators, then try http://www.stormfront.org might be more to your liking. No one is making you come here.
  18. www.bbb.org look up Skyride. They get an F rating. that is as bad as it gets. says it all I am afraid. If you want to think that it has nothing to do with the dropzone, then that is your choice, but you are fooling only yourself. Skyride is bad for skydiving. They owners are therefore bad for skydiving. They get no support from me, either through skyride or through their dropzone.
  19. careful Mr Mike what you ask for. In order for more claims to be paid, there would have to be more oversight and more regulations. More regulations and oversight would require agencies of some sort that have power. Most of those agencies would have to be government agencies and they would have to be funded by tax dollars to make them work So careful what you ask for.....

  21. http://www.skydivecity.com Our slogan? "We suck less!" We have great boogies and stay busy all winter long. Multiple turbines and this year for sure a large variety of aircraft.
  22. also how you sit in the harness. If you tend to 'stand up straight' even under canopy, the harness is tighter. If you sit back, lift your knees high like sitting in a swing, then the harness has a lot of slack in it. What's more important is how it fits when standing and skydiving in freefall. The harness should be snug and not restricting.
  23. yes, but if you google something, you can generally find out if it has bad things in it, and there appear to be none. There are plenty of geeks out there that take assembled code like that, disassemble it and find out exactly what it does, or does not do - to refute or support the author's claims. So again, CCleaner, while not perfect, is likely not dangerous to your system. Or you could just buy a Mac, and be done with all the annoyances of the PC
  24. where did that come from? Solar electric cells are being produced quite inexpensively these days, low impact and they last 20-30 years at least.
