As skydivers on a skydiving related message board, are we more likely to talk about politics and non-skydiving matters rather than dz life and jumping related topics? Talk Back has over 17,500 topics, while the General Skydiving Discussion has less than 500 topics.

Skydiving is more important the politics. Then again, you'd never know by reading some of the posts... From what I've heard form friends and relatives on boths sides of the "issue," you didn't miss much. Anti-war turned into Anti-American. I still hate seeing the flag being burned.

Since we're jumpers, I'll jump in... Air power had a lot to do with. Russians in American planes. And it's okay that you are anti-American. The United States will even allow some to become citizens. Unknowingly, of course. Home of the free. And like Lou Diamond quotes: "Freedom isn't Free."

I just wish the country could come together like that to battle HIV/AIDS and/or world hunger/feeding/sheltering the homeless, etc... We should also remember our brothers and sisters from San Diego that are participating in a different rally numbering close to 20,000; in Kuwait City.

It's for the love of the sport and educating new jumpers to become better jumpers. I don't know of too many instructors that do it for the money. Camera flyers probably make the most money on our dz. So if it's about the money, and you already have a camera, become a videographer.

So, did I understand this the wrong way or are you actually saying the US did not fund the mujahideen and their leader, Osama bin Laden (who was in that time called a freedom fighter), in their battle against the Soviet army? I do agree that someone needs to get their facts straight UBL was not their so-called leader. Who was? Was there one specific individual? You mention the 80's. The United States and the Soviet Union were adversaries. And being close to the action, you should be well aware of the old Azeri phrase, "The enemy of my enemy is my friend." I think that holds true today as the United States and many, if not all of the former Soviet states are allies, so to speak.
