Why compare him to an Amish man? Why not compare him to a coal burner truck dude? Or to you? - Dan G

Well, labor participation rates are a little more complicated than "Obama bad" https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-01-19/why-labor-force-participation-is-still-so-low - Dan G

Can someone explain how this new regulation has anything to do with public health? http://abcnews.go.com/Health/texas-require-burials-abortions/story?id=43879418 - Dan G

If that was their attitude, then they were in the wrong line of work. Bill stated that not all people in uniform are worthy of respect, but he gives them the benefit of the doubt. Your friends probably wouldn't keep that respect for long. In many parts of our country firefighters and paramedics are volunteers. I doubt they do it for the free t-shirts. - Dan G

As the old saying goes, "I may disagree with what you say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it." Burning a flag doesn't disrespect soldiers. Maybe in your country the flag is a symbol of the military. In the US the flag is a symbol of the country and the country's values. The right to say and do what you want is a central part of those values. When I see someone burning the flag I'm not offended because I was a US soldier. I find burning the flag distasteful, but I'm strangely proud of my country when someone burns a flag and doesn't get thrown in jail like he would in some other places. In a very perverse way, flag burning is one of the things that makes America great. - Dan G

I joined the Army and fought for American values, not some colorful piece of cloth. Interestingly, one of those values was freedom of speech. - Dan G

Well, it has been to the Supreme Court, and they ruled on it based on the free speech argument. BTW, Alito voted that flag burning was protected speech. - Dan G

What about the ones who rely on corporate funds? Pure as the driven snow, I assume. - Dan G

Why isn't it a good idea? - Dan G

Aren't you guys busy that night? I'm pretty sure you have that thing that you just can't get out of. - Dan G

Yeah, but how's anyone supposed to books, bunkers, and MREs by shouting that the US government stopped checking a text file? - Dan G

Employee of the month means nothing either. Do you get mad at that? Just because the Judy was abused one time doesn't mean the award is meaningless. I know people who have been awarded a Judy and it literally brought them to tears. It's a simple, cost free program that local people can use to promote safety culture. Just because Lodi abused it doesn't mean it is bad. Lodi does everything in their power to fuck up the program for everyone else. This is no different. - Dan G

Do you know how the Ches Judy award works? A DZ awards that without any input from USPA at all. If you'd like USPA staff to conduct research into the background and safety practices of every Ches Judy awardee your dues are going to be a lot higher than $55 a year. The point to the Ches Judy program is to allow DZs to locally recognize jumpers. It is not a nationally organized program. It's like local McDonalds franchises giving out employee of the month awards. Or USPA could scrap the Ches Judy program, at which point you'd bitch that USPA doesn't do enough to promote safety. - Dan G

Which award did Dause get from the USPA? - Dan G

That was the change from 2014 to 2015. Your radio lied to you again. You should get it checked. - Dan G

How many fucking times do I have to tell you? Wendy asked what makes America great, not what makes America best. Get over yourself and your also great country. - Dan G

Again, this isn't about what makes America better, it is about what makes America great. The rights enjoyed by our citizens, protected for centuries now, are some of the things that make America great. Regarding free speech, if you can't see the benefit then I feel sorry for you. I really din't see how women have more freedom in other countries. They may have made more strides towards social and economic equality, but I don't see how they enjoy more freedom. I agree that our criminal justice system is messed up right now, but I feel people are starting to wake up to that fact. I think real change is on the horizon. In America we have a process to change things when enough people want a change. That's another thing that makes America great. - Dan G

Once a nation decides that some speech is off limits it will eventually decide that other speech is off limits, too. We are having this debate now in the US, especially on college campuses where some students want to limit speech they don't like. The freedom of speech needs to be absolute or it will eventually disappear. Anyway, this thread isn't "what makes America better than your country" it is about what makes America great. Our freedom of speech is one thing that makes America great. - Dan G

The freedom of speech in the US is much broader than in Europe, including the UK. Your libel laws allow the effective prior restraint of a lot of speech that would be legal in the US. Gun rights are actually rights, even if they are rights you are not accustomed to. We could do a better job of regulating guns, but the fact that anyone can arm themselves is a significant difference between the US and other countries. - Dan G
-
Well, for instance our citizens have the freedom to use Nazi symbols, where yours do not. Is this a significant freedom? Not on its face, but in the context of the lack of what we call prior restraint, it is very significant. - Dan G
-
Well, I think you're overstating your case a little. There are some countries with slightly higher standards of living. There are also some countries that have different freedoms, but I'm not sure there is anywhere where the citizens have more freedom. That's very subjective, of course. There's no question that some countries have better healthcare, better education, and less violence, I'll grant you that. - Dan G

Our founding principles of liberty and equality. The idea of the country is great. We don't always achieve the idea, but the fact that we try makes us great. - Dan G

Does "better relationship" mean we'll look the other way when the Russians invade more of Ukraine? Or maybe be we can stop being so vocal about their war crimes in Syria? Perhaps "better relationship" means we can let them move troops into Poland or the Baltic states, you know, because we trust them so much. - Dan G
