Burglar's family awarded $300,000 in wrongful death suit
DanG replied to jclalor's topic in Speakers Corner
Putting aside what vb may or may not have said, you're right that you can't train a dog as well as you can control a gun. On the other hand, if someone comes into the house above shouts about having a gun, are you going to take their word for it that they only want the stereo? I suppose you could draw down on them, and order them to leave. If they put their hands up, calmly walked over to the stereo, picked it up, and backed out of the room, I think I'd let them keep it and rely on the cops to get it back for me. If they said they only wanted the stereo and got within ten feet of my wife, I'd put them down. I suspect most reasonable people, including vb, would do the same thing. - Dan G -

I understand what you're saying, and I generally agree. I think where we diverge is that you seem to see the dog as an inanimate tool in the same way as the gun is. I believe the dog has a right to defend itself just like I do. If the dog (or human) barks out a warning and the bad guy keeps coming, then hurting him is okay. I will concede that the dog might be more dangerous to the trespasser who changes his mind after breaking in. Dogs can be trained not to give chase past the property line, so if you're using your dog as a lethal means of home defense, it should be so trained. In my case, my dogs are a great deterent, but I doubt they'd put up much of a fight if the burgular had a steak with him. - Dan G -

The difference is that a gun is lousy for defense (property or self) if the owner isn't holding it at the time of the offense. It is also provides no deterent against the initiation of criminal behavior. No one puts a "Beware of Gun" sign in their yard and thinks it will keep people from burguling the place when they're not home. On the other hand, the best features of a dog come into play regardless of whether you're home or not. The dog, especially with a "Beware of Dog" sign, is an excellent deterent against someone even coming on your property. Even tweaked out meth heads will think twice about jumping a fence with a dog on the other side of it. In either case, if the bad guy keeps coming through the barking dog, or the owner warning him of the gun and intent to fire, then they get whatever they deserve. - Dan G -

A. Who are "they"? We all seem to be arguing past each other in this thread. B. IIRC, virgin_burner has said in other threads that he owns multiple guns and is quite proficient at their use. I doubt he thinks guns are bad. C. The whole "you're lock step with us or you're a gun-o-phobe" thing is why a lot of people are wary of the pro-gun lobby. - Dan G -

I completely agree. I just want to make it clear that I believe once the burgular is fleeing, you need to hold your fire. - Dan G -

I agree, and you bring up an inportant distiction between burgulary and robbery. Burgulary is stealing from a place. Robbery is stealing from a person. Burgulars, by definition, are not a threat to your health. Robbers are. You can appropriately defend yourself against robbers, but "defending" against burgulars is essentially hunting. SC disclaimer: I realize these definitions are not legally accurate, but they get the point across. - Dan G -

Tell that to popsjumper. He was the one I replied to, and the one that thinks the state should give the murderers a medal. I have no problem with self-defense. Lethal force is totally justified when you're defending yourself or another person, but lethal force in defense of property is not. In your hypothetical situation where the burgular runs away and threatens to come back with weapons, the prudent idea is to barricade yourself and call the cops. Shooting him in the back is still not warranted. The Bush Doctrine doesn't apply to home defense. - Dan G -

Seriously? Give me a break. My real name is in my profile. Look me up, come on over. If you show up when I'm not there and have the balls to break in past my 72 lb pitbull and 85 lb shepherd, you can have my stuff. Insurance will cover it. If I'm home, I'll do my best to defend myself, up to and including using firearms. I will also try to issue a warning that I'm home, armed, and not afraid to fight. If you keep coming, I'll fight you with everything I have. I will not, however, shoot you in the back as you're running away like the people in this story did. Sorry, I don't value my Wii that much. - Dan G -

Dogs are not guns. Dogs make a ton of noise, and if the burgular continues to break in over the barks of my dogs, then clearly he has evil intent in mind, and they have the right to defend themselves. The analagous situation with a gun is a burgular who continues to break in after I yell, "I have a gun and will shoot you if you don't leave!" If he keeps coming, he clearly has evil intent in mind and I have the right to defend myself. The people in this story did not issue a warning, they set a trap and seemed to intend on killing people over property. The self-defense claim is laughable. - Dan G -

By our standards, most people in Afghanistan are filthy, smelly, and highly ungroomed. Farting is, on the other hand (no pun intended), considered about the most vile thing you can do with your body. A comparable level of nastiness in our culture might be eating your own toe jam during tea with the Queen, and then wiping your finger on her hat. I found this out by farting in front of a local warlord before a meeting one time. For the next eight months, whenever I came in the room he would stiffen up like a rabid dog just walked in and took a shit on the table. No one told us about it before we went over there, but it really is taboo. PS. They don't use their hands to wipe their asses directly, they use rocks or other debris. Of course, they mostly don't have running water, so if a little shit gets on your fingers, you just deal with it. - Dan G

Of course you're right. There are much more important things than toy gun buy-backs, such as complaining about toy gun buy-backs on the internet. - Dan G

All of you assume that every pair of people has a child. I'm sure there are many people who don't have children, for whatever reason, but still retire at some point. JohnRich's math is even worse than Biden's. If JohnRich were right, Social Security in the US would never face any problems maintaining funding. - Dan G

I was refering to the debt ceiling negotiations. The Democrats wanted a balanced plan to cut spending and increase revenue, but the Republicans would not accept any revenue increases whatsoever. - Dan G -

Chigaway works great. It stops the itch and gets rid of the bugs. I don't know if I've ever seen it outside of a PX. Maybe an outdoors supply store like Gander Mountain. - Dan G

Aren't you the one always complaining about the sexism from the Left? And now you objectify a woman as more valuable simply because she's good looking. Nice. - Dan G

Yeah, pretty much. If an Islamic country is having a civil war, every attack is not a Jihadist Terrorist Attack. War is war. Targeting civilians is wrong, but it really doesn't have anything to do with terrorist threats outside of the country at war. - Dan G

Your list is pretty misleading. A very large number of those incidents are from Iraq and Afghanistan. - Dan G
