Do you realize that only a small portion of the proposed stimulus is unemployment insurance extensions? Most of the stimulus is in the form of infrastructure spending and payroll tax reduction. That type of spending doesn't go to people getting handouts, it goes to people who are working. - Dan G

Be sure to give the top skin of a canopy a good inspection after clearing a line over. Friction burn damage is not unheard of. - Dan G

That's all good advice. I would also recommend doing a lot of practice without the lanyard up high, since you won't have it under reserve. When I lost my prosthetic (right lower arm) on a jump, one of the hardest things was just getting both toggles unstowed and in one hand. It sounds easy until you try it. I wish I had practiced that before I needed it. Of course I had regular length risers, so reaching the opposite toggle was hard. Shorter risers will help, but if you want shorter reserve risers, that might be tough. Perhaps larger than standard reserve toggles. It might not be a bad idea to put your container on a hanging harness before the canopies are installed, and test out your reserve steering procedures. I think an SOS is a no brainer for the OP. One other consideration is the main and reserve canopies must have low enough toggle pressure that you can flare with one arm. A student style canopy might be a good choice, but working on arm and shoulder strength is always smart. - Dan G

Why do you tape your bad arm down? Is it a strength issue? I'm a right arm, BE amputee. It's a different ballgame, since I have my elbow, but when I was jumping, I used my bad arm (with prosthetic) quite a bit. Good luck with everything. - Dan G

Guess what? Some of the posters here are vets from Afghanistan. I can assure you at least one of them doesn't like being called a schmuck. However, that same poster does like the fact that his service, in some very small and perhaps imperceptible way, helped preserve an asshole's right to say what he thinks. - Dan G -

It may not be wise, but no matter how douchey someone's opinion is, and this one is certainly douchey, they still have the right to say it. I love that about our country, no matter how assholish I think some people who exercise their rights may be. BTW, nice veiled threat. Kinda douchey, though. - Dan G -
Here's a plot of how the compressive yield strength of a steel alloy in general use is affected by temperature. I'm not sure what steel was used in the WTC, but this response is typical. The open air burning temperature of jet fuel is about 500F. At 500F, this steel only has 80% of its room temperature strength. As the temperature rises past 500F, you can see the strength drops off quickly. By the time you get to 800F, the strength is half of what it is at room temperature. Add this reduction in strength to the increase in load from damage to other columns, and failure is easy to explain. - Dan G

1 - I agree, no one used the word "everyone" except me. I was asking mnealtx if he thought that about everyone who voted for Obama. I have yet to receive a reply, but never really expected one anyway. 2 - I wrote that in response to mnealtx's quote of a poor black woman. I didn't mean to imply that you were making that claim. mnealtx was attempting to "prove" your point, and I asked for clarification. You have to admit that there are a lot of people who post here who constantly accuse Obama supporters of thinking he's the Messiah, only voting for him because they wanted to vote for a black guy, or being lazy, unemployed welfare losers. I don't think you believe that, but there are definitely some (including mnealtx) who seem to. - Dan G
