If sincere, it's a nice sentiment. On the other hand, rweider is the one who showed up in the thread with fire and brimstone. Saying he's bowing out because the fire is getting to hot for me is a convenient way to avoid having to defend his position. - Dan G

I appreciate your concern, but I'm not sure what's worse than going to hell. On the other hand, even if I were a Christian I would not accept that Bible passage as representing the loving God described in the New Testament. It always irks me when Christians pick and choose which Old Testament verses to accept. They eat shellfish and pork, but cling to the ones that make them feel good. Talk about hypocrtical. - Dan G

That's not the point, and you know it. The point is that some Christian denominations do not permit the marrying of a mixed race couple. Do you believe a minister ordained by such a denomination should be allowed to refuse to perform a mixed race marriage? This is still assuming for argument that chaplains are required to perform any marriage that someone asks them to. - Dan G

The napkin was written by my wife, the One and Only True Prophet. Blasphemy! How dare you deny the religion of the napkin? The napkin God is an angry God, I fear for your immortal soul. What about the Book of Mormon? That was handed down to Joseph Smith by an angel. Do you believe that as the revealed Word of God? - Dan G

Right now that statement is contradicted by labrys. Neither one of you has provided a citation for your positions, but labrys certainly seems more credible. - Dan G

I don't blame Him for anything. I also don't give Him credit for good things. I don't believe He exists. Like I said, douchey. I appreciate your concern for my immortal soul. That's nice. But frankly I wouldn't want to spend an eternity basking in the presence of a being who's so jealous, petty, and cruel. - Dan G

Believe me, I'm glad I'm not you, too. I don't worry about an invisible man judging everything I say and do. I decide to be a good person because it's right, not because I fear punishment from a space ghost. I was born and raised in it, too. I outgrew it just like I outgrew Santa Claus and the boogeyman. If He decides to smite me for noting that only a douchebag would punish innocent children for the supposed actions of the state Board of Education, and/or Thomas Jefferson, then I guess I'm just being proven right. We have a napkin on our fridge that says "La religione tovaliolo e la unica vera religione, perche le dica proprio qui su questa tovaliolo", which, my terrible Italian spelling and grammar aside, says, "The napkin religion is the only true religion, because it says so right here on this napkin." That pretty much sums up the Bible, don't you think? - Dan G

The hypocrites are people who thank God for all the good things that happen, but fail to blame him for the bad. - Dan G

Your God sounds like a real fucking douchebag. - Dan G

I think that is most likely untrue, but I'm too lazy to look into the military regulations regarding marriage ceremonies. I'm not sure a military chaplain would ever be required (not permitted, required) to perform any marriage ceremony. That's not what chaplains are for. I know they are capable of performing marriages, I just doubt that they would be required as part of their official duties. On the flip side, let's assume for the moment that chaplains are required to perform marriages when someone asks (which I still seriously doubt). Do you feel that military chaplains who's religion teaches that interracial marriages are an abomination should be excused from being required to perform those ceremonies? - Dan G

Being the exact same argument you're making, you're right, it is lame. - Dan G

Eye of the beholder, I guess. I actually read what was written on the monument and took it's meaning at face value. On the other hand, if you need to believe that there is a "War on Christianity", then I guess you can use the monument as "evidence". - Dan G

Newly released NSA slides explain mechanics of US surveillance
DanG replied to ayevee8toryear's topic in Speakers Corner
In general, I agree. But "Liberals" generally want to increase the size of social spending programs, while "Conservatives" generally want to increase the size of defense programs. That's why trying to blame the "Liberals" for the size of the defense apparatus is a little disingenuous. - Dan G -
Perhaps if you took a moment and looked at the pictures in the linked article, you'd realize that the monument is focused on the fact the the US is a secular nation. It isn't espousing a belief in nothing, it's espousing a belief in the separation of church and state. - Dan G

Generally it's the conservatives who think the only part of government worth funding is the security and defense apparatus. Remember, "liberal" doesn't mean, "everything GravityMaster doesn't like." - Dan G -
Surprising, when you do such a great job of explaining yourself - Dan G

No, I understand quite well. I understand that granting same sex, legally married couples federal benefits has exactly zero impact on your church. No one is asking him or your church to do anything, whatsoever. That's pure fantasy, and nothing to do with DOMA being struck down. Did you church have tax exempt status before DOMA? Then it will still have it now. I don't know what "this" is, but if you mean your church's stand, then no one has any interest in crossing your line in the sand. - Dan G

Your pastor apparently has no idea what the law of the land is regarding gay marriage. It's a shame you follow such an ignorant man. - Dan G

Wow, abortion to the death penalty to Benghazi in two pages. That must be a record. - Dan G

I agree. We've all done something in the past we're not proud of. The problem with Paula Dean is that her damage control has sucked. If she'd been more contrite from the get-go, and made it clear that she'd learned from her mistakes (whether or not she even thinks they were mistakes) this whole thing would have gone away. If I were a sponsor of hers, I'd probably back away because she's screwing it up so badly now, not over what she said years ago. - Dan G
-
If Trayvon Martin had a line of clothing at Abercrombie and Fitch, they probably would have dropped him, too. He was a juvenile loser. That's how juvenile losers talk. Paula Dean is a millionaire spokesperson and celebrity. She should know better, and certainly should have done a better job of damage control. - Dan G

NPR reported this morning that the bill would close 37 of the 42 clinics in the state. This is not about safety, it is an attempt to ban abortion in Texas by making it prohibitively hard and/or expensive to obtain one. I still predict the Feds will find the bill overreaches, but it will probably take years. - Dan G

If the state showed that there was an actual increase in the danger to women by having abortions performed by doctors who do not have admitting privleges in hospitals less than 30 miles away? That would be fine. AFAIK, they didn't show that, they just came up with something that most if not all doctors couldn't pass, and then said it was for safety. It's BS and everyone knows it. - Dan G

By having a majority of both houses on Congress vote aye, signed by the President, and reviewed and approved by the Supreme Court? Doesn't seem like a backdoor to me. - Dan G

I don't know if he needs to comment, but on most news of the days he's expected to comment. I just don't think his comments, if I'm remembering them correctly, were out of line considering it looked at the time like the case wasn't being prosecuted. - Dan G
