I make my checkmarks just like that. Everyone that makes fun of me, I just tell them " Everybody is born right handed, intelligent people overcome that. If you were SMART ENOUGH, you could be left handed too!" Just burning a hole in the sky.....

I do NOT EVER want the US Government to manage my healthcare. Here is a recent personal example of why I say that. My youngest son has a congenital spinal stenosis condition. He had surgery to relieve this condition and the terrible pain it causes, 4 years ago. That situation took 2 weeks from identification of a spinal problem, to diagnosis, MRI, and surgery by one of the finest spinal surgeons in the entire country, if not the planet (my point being that a surgeon of that ability and world renown is readily available to a common person like me under our present healthcare system for a reasonable amount of money-surgeon's fee, about $2800.00). Fast forward to the present- My son is now a PFC in the Marine Corps stationed in Maryland, and just had back surgery again last Thursday to again relieve stenosis in the 2 vertebrae below the original surgery- except now, the time from diagnosis and MRI (by a civilian doctor when he was home on leave, that I paid for) to surgery by a Naval neurosurgeon at Bethesda took almost FOUR MONTHS!!!! The bureaucratic handringing and red tape was difficult to watch because I knew from previous experience that he was in a great deal of pain and the longer it took before the operation, the greater the chance of permanent nerve damage in his back. Not to mention that the Navy probably pissed away $10,000.00 trying to confirm the diagnosis and MRI by the civilian doctor in April, before ever getting to the expensive surgery part. Observing firsthand how badly our government F's up healthcare now for our military, I am not in favor of making it nationwide for all of us to suffer the same thing that just happened to my son. THOSE OF YOU IN FAVOR OF "HILLARYCARE", PULL YOUR HEADS OUT OR YOUR COLLECTIVE ASSES AND LOOK LOGICALLY AT THE REALITY OF THE POOR HEALTHCARE IN ALL THE OTHER SO CALLED DEVELOPED COUNTRIES THAT HAVE SOCIALIZED MEDICINE!!! A GREAT MANY OF THE PEOPLE THAT POST HERE FROM THOSE COUNTRIES HAVE NEVER KNOWN ANYTHING ELSE BUT THE SORRY SERVICE AND SUBSTANDARD CARE THAT IS THE NORM IN THEIR LAND. SINCE THEY HAVE NEVER HAD THE LEVEL OF CARE WE ENJOY, THEY DON'T MISS IT. READ ALL YOU CAN ON THE SUBJECT, EDUCATE YOURSELF ON THE SERIOUSNESS OF THIS SITUATION, AND DON'T BE DUPED, VOTE AGAINST SOCIALIZED MEDICINE WHENEVER YOU HAVE THE CHANCE!!!!!! EXACTLY. That dumbass is no more a Native American than my cup of Columbian coffee. Just because he says he is and his peers in the world of academia accepted that does not make it reality. And as the article accurately states, his rant on Americans being "little Eichmanns" was not even reviewed or considered in the process of reviewing his employment at CU and subsequent firing. He was fired for lying, cheating, and stealing other people's articles and artwork. Justice was done by the CU board. Just burning a hole in the sky.....

I keep a weapon nearby. It is interesting to read all these as our perspectives and experiences are so varied. I keep a short barreled shotgun (1/2" over minimum legal) in my front closet. I live out in the woods and it is useful to scare off the occasional mountain lion that wanders into my yard so that he does not eat my dogs. I don't feel the need for protection from other humans as much as a city dweller, but it would take the cops so long to respond should I have an emergency with an intruder that I have to be ready and willing to provide my own protection, so the shotgun is necessary but I hope never needed. Just a small price that I pay for living 12 miles from town. Just burning a hole in the sky.....

'Off we go...(hic)...into the wild blue yonderrrrr'
squarecanopy replied to Para_Frog's topic in Speakers Corner
Many airborne types I have known liked to "drink and drive". I grew up around pilots (including my father, God rest his soul) who drank until 2 am and took off at 6 am day after day. As far as these astronauts are concerned, I guess the stress of having the one in a gozillion chance to strap 2 million pounds of thrust to their ass and take off on an adventure that the rest of us can only dream about is more than some of them can handle. They are human, after all. Just burning a hole in the sky..... -
I for one hope you guys get one built out there. As California goes, so goes the country, to some extent, so we all may see positive results if California leads the way. The benefits outweigh the problems, as already so eloquently stated here on several posts. We ARE smart enough to solve the problem of spent fuel...... Just burning a hole in the sky.....

Oh, more hand ringing here! Bill, your post is just riddled with logic, facts and irritatingly thought out support such as photos and research. I don't think you should be allowed to post on SC for at least 1 week. Shame on you for ruining the article's inference about you bunny lovin' tree huggin' PRIUS DRIVING freaks actually being the ones ruining the planet for the rest of us. You may lose your magic decoder ring for this one, sir. Just burning a hole in the sky.....

>It's not air bags and stability systems that ultimately set safe highway speeds, it's reaction time, tire traction and braking power - and those things haven't changed much in 40 years. Bill, I've MISSED SOMETHING HERE- 40 years ago we were driving around on bias belt tires and trying to stop with skinny little drum brakes-even on larger cars and trucks. Now we have vr rated, low profile radial tires that provide much better traction, and 4 wheel ventilated disc brakes that have halved the stopping distance of a large number of the car models on the road today. The reaction time part of your comment I agree with, please explain the traction/brakes part... >Sorry, we pay road taxes too; we get to use them too. Once you start mailing me a rebate for the road taxes I don't use I'll consider using bike paths/sidewalks only. ???? I am under the impression that road taxes are collected largely by the FREAKIN' HUGE TAX on road fuel which bicycles do not pay( Even if they did pay road taxes, nobody can say that bicycles do not impede traffic, which is the real problem with having them out in the road). Again please explain. Just burning a hole in the sky.....

Hey Doctor- Isn't it about 15 feet away when our eyes no longer have binocular paralax? In other words, no real binocular depth perception beyond the 15 foot mark? Just burning a hole in the sky.....

>He who bleeds with me is my brother, and he who takes up arms >against me is my enemy. We've supported most of the people we later ended up fighting. We sent arms to the Mujahideen and supported Saddam Hussein against Iran. A true and ironic tragedy. Just burning a hole in the sky.....

PRIUS Outdoes HUMMER In Environmental Damage Holy Batshit, Batman! What a revolting development. Total impact is something to think about. On the other hand, is it better to completely trash one small area of the planet if it substantially lowers our impact on the rest of it? Just burning a hole in the sky.....

>> but as you mentioned, that's the situation we put ourselves in by going to war and killing tens of thousands of innocent people (accidentally, of course.) I mentioned nothing of the sort. All I stated by my examples was that war has consequences for all involved. >>Those 13 year olds (and their brothers and sisters) will grow up to be the next Mohamed Attas. We will, unfortunately, reap what we have sown. It stands to reason that if you leave your enemy in a war alive no matter what their age, they may well come and kill you later. I tend to adhere to the old saying about war : He who bleeds with me is my brother, and he who takes up arms against me is my enemy. Just burning a hole in the sky.....

You must have one humongous family room! Me and my friend Sladi VladBaast (sp?) are available if you need help with planet building. He's especially good with fjords. LOL That does read kind if weird, huh? I actually did that on purpose to see if you would catch the double meaning, Pirana.... Just burning a hole in the sky.....

>>How about a 13 year old girl who kills a soldier >>because she saw her mother killed by them? You >>willing to pull the trigger on her? That is the shitty reality of war. Your 13 year old girl is the same as a 30 year old professional soldier who has just killed an American soldier- the net effect is that our soldier is dead, and if I was involved hopefully I would have the sense to not make an emotional differentiation between the two, and drop her where she stood. I would at that point have to assume she might kill me or another soldier standing there and act accordingly. Two of my friends that were in Vietnam faced the very situation you describe. Not exactly a win win scenario. That is why I think the real price paid by soldiers that have killed ANYBODY is spiritual. You cannot take the life of another human without it hurting your soul permanently. Just burning a hole in the sky.....

You hit the nail on the head, Mike-UCMJ. I do not want our soldiers judged by any other than the UCMJ and their peers. We civilians do not understand the situation well enough to be qualified judges of their conduct. Just burning a hole in the sky.....

I am not sure your response addresses what I said. What I meant was that if you have not been there yourself, it is IMPOSSIBLE to know what our soldiers are up against, to really understand the complexities of this new brand of urban terrorist warfare that our military faces, therefore making it all too easy to take their actions out of context. And I will say unequivocally and without apology that ANY combatant who for ANY REASON kills one of our soldiers should die as soon as possible. If I am confronted with a terrorist here and have the ability to kill him first, I will take it, ala Flight 93. Just burning a hole in the sky.....

>1) Solar is inherently a "peaking" source. Its >output is highest on sunny summer days when >demand is highest. If it gets cloudy, demand goes >down. My understanding from people who are closer to the problem than anyone else I personally am aquainted with is that the steadiness of alternatives is just not there yet. Consider Seattle in the winter time when it is overcast for 10 days in a row with 50 degree ambient air temp and rain. Solar effective power through the clouds is greatly reduced although power demand is close to the same as a sunny winter day. >2) We are rapidly moving into real time TOU >metering and remote load shedding. I would like to know more about this! Please elaborate. >These other sources of power are not at this time steady enough to >provide the high quality (steady voltage, current and frequency) . . . >That's completely wrong. The solar inverter on my >house provides higher quality power than the power >I get from the grid. My understanding from my power plant contacts (and I am seriously considering doing a solar system at my house because I think this is the REAL solution to the power problem we face as a nation) is that the systems like the one at your house are quite capable of producing high quality power on a small scale, but that it is not reproducible on a large scale at this time. What is your opinion of a nation of private, small solar systems all tied to the existing power grid? Just burning a hole in the sky.....

How can I register to donate bone marrow? I want to save person's live. How often you can donate it? The drill once you are registered is that they keep your info in the system and if you MATCH someone in need, then they call you. The likelihood of you ever being a match is small, and that is why it is so important to be willing to be a donor, so that there are alot of people in the data base to draw from. I have been registered for 3 years now, don't ever really expect the call, but willing if it comes... Go to the National Marrow Donor Program website at www.marrow.org and it will walk you through the steps to get on the donor list! Just burning a hole in the sky.....
