Skydiving is bad for the environment
squarecanopy replied to ChangoLanzao's topic in Speakers Corner
What really gets me is that they used one of MY PHOTOS without permission and without attribution. Sheesh! That is to be expected from such a narrow minded hypocrite as this clown obviously is. He should consider the amount of fossil fuel burned by(and the poisonous byproducts spewed out of) the engines of the last airliner he rode on; probably enough to power the Twin Otter I jump out of for the next year. And he SHOULD pay you for your picture, even if it is only a dollar. As far as auto and air racing goes, many technological advances that have had a widespread effect our everyday impact on the enviroment have come from racing. Fuel injection, for example. Advancements in tire technology that allow safer driving on tires that last longer. Metallurgy that gives us lighter stronger cars and airplanes that burn less fuel. Well maybe shes not completely irrational. Throwing yourself out of an airplane isnt exactly normal. Quote Your wife's fear of you dying is real, although somewhat irrational in my view. I say that because....You and I WILL die of something, it is just the when and where and how that are still unknowns. If you never jump, you will die - I will die a SKYDIVER. I would not be able to leave this world happy without having been skydiving. I feel privileged to have done the few jumps that I have. IMO YOU must decide if you can live without this in your life, not your wife or anyone else. Just burning a hole in the sky.....

Is it lame to match your canopy to your container?
squarecanopy replied to HeatherObscura's topic in Gear and Rigging
Have the colors you want! Jump like you mean it and work hard at being the best skydiver you can be every time you are at the DZ, and everything else will take care of itself. You will NEVER be able to keep everyone happy, so make yourself happy and jump safe! Just burning a hole in the sky..... -

A day at the DZ to remember!!
squarecanopy replied to humbled1's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Steve, you are a lucky man!!! Great pics!!! I have had the privilege to jump two way with one of my sons, and it is truly a day that I will never forget. Now that both of my boys are off defending our shores in the Marine Corps, who knows when that will happen again, but I am hopeful. I wish you many happy and safe jump days with your daughter! Does your Sabre2 open on or off heading more often?
squarecanopy replied to Rooky's topic in Gear and Rigging
I agree with this. Mine are 99% on heading, but you can't be an arching lump in the harness during opening, you need to 'feel' the canopy and work with it, actively fly it during the opening. My experience as well after about 100 jumps on the Sabre 2 210 and 190. Well said both times. Just burning a hole in the sky..... -

Lazy day at Mile High. Only the Cessna 206 was flying, so I jumped out of it twice. It was damn cold at altitude, but hey....a cold afternoon of skydiving is better than the best day at work! Just burning a hole in the sky..... -
I'VE never done anything like that, even remotely like that, either skydiving or racing motorcycles, so I can laugh at that bozo.... Just burning a hole in the sky.....

Jump Tickets, how high before you quit?
squarecanopy replied to CMiller's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
look at the jump tickets when skydiving started out, 3, 4 dollars for a lift, now its 25 to 30 in places. Something else affecting the cost of modern day skydiving... From what I have read of skydiving history, most drop zones that charged $4 per lift in the old days were flying 5-6 jumpers in single engine Cessnas. Now days, we ride up in half the time in big, fast climbing turbine airplanes that are much safer to jump out of, all the other variables being equal. Speed (and safety) costs money, so the age old question is-How Fast Do You Want To Go? Just burning a hole in the sky..... -
You can certainly fly by yourself with coach for the entire amount of minutes that you purchase. What Bill was saying is that when you get to flying well enough to be in the tunnel two way with another flyer ( by mutual agreement) now you get to fly the total number of minutes that both of you have purchased. Example - you buy 10 minutes, your tunnel buddy buys 10 minutes, you can both get in together for your 10 minutes, and then his/her 10 minutes. You have both flown a total of 20 minutes and it cost each of you for only 10 minutes. Just burning a hole in the sky.....

dislocated shoulder while in freefall
squarecanopy replied to oldschoolkyle's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
You should do a google search for rotator cuff exercises. These are special moves that most people don't know that will strengthen the shoulder and increase stability. Any good fitness trainer will know these and be able to teach you. Also not all physical therepists know these exercises. I work in medicine and trust me do these exercises they will make a tremendous differance, in a fairly short amount of time. BSBD My right shoulder always hurt when learning to jump so I did exercises and kept jumping. One day I had a low pull due to lack of control of my shoulder, scared myself enough to go to the doctor and get an MRI. The rotator cuff was 90+ % torn free of the bone. The exercise obviously was not helping the rotator cuff, only keeping the shoulder muscles strong enough to keep the joint in relative position. Surgery fixed the cuff, and I'm back jumping. I would recommend getting some in depth diagnosis to ensure the soundness of your shoulder tissues, as exercise alone may not fix it. Just burning a hole in the sky..... -
WHO suppressed this billboard? It does not sound like the city ordered the removal, only asked if it could be removed. It seems to me from what I have heard so far, and unless the forthcoming facts prove otherwise, that the Billboard company took down the sign upon request, not force. Because we have the First Amendment, nobody can legally "supress" an atheist's right to spend their money displaying their view on a billboard. There must be more to this story. Darwinian candidate AKA who the hell taght this guy ?
squarecanopy replied to likestojump's topic in Safety and Training
You must be jumping at sea level. yes just like the vast majority of east and west coast jumpers in the USofA, what's your point? My point was and is that not all places do things the same as the USofA and it does not seem to turn out to be the Big Bad terrible Thing that alot of people claim it to be. Point taken. My point is that jumping a 1.3 or 1.4 WL at 40 jumps here in Colorado is a recipe for getting your ass busted bad. The field elevation at Mile High in Longmont is 5052 ft MSL, and on hot days the density altitude on the ground can exceed 9,000 ft. Thin air = less lift = less margin for error - means more experience needed for safe landings at high wing loadings. Your lack of injury jumping a high WL at low levels of experience was due to your sea level environment. It is simply the principles of aerodynamics dictated by the laws of physics. Jumping your 150 or 135 with only 40 jumps in Colorado would very likely get you hurt, especially in the summer. Whew. It was alot shorter just to say " you must be jumping at sea level". BTW I am sincerely happy for your lack of injuries. Keep it up. I have been through the shattered tib/fib thing and it ain't fun. Keeps you out of the airplane for long periods of time too. Smallish Canopy for Beginner
squarecanopy replied to FlyinBrian87's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Canopy flight is the same way. Regardless of how much theory you know, you need the 'stick time' to build in the muscle memory and reflexes to be able to handle a faster canopy. Remember, there are no go-arounds or missed approaches in skydiving. You're landing, and you're landing right now, like it or not. Equip yourself accordingly. GOOD ADVICE. LISTEN TO IT. I am a low numbers jumper, so I don't have specific equipment advice for you. Fortunately/unfortunately I have had two experiences that might be of value to you in this decision. First, I broke my leg during AFF (230 student canopy was not a factor) and I can say that it is not something you want to do. I was off of work for 4 months, pain, rehab, big loss of income, NO JUMPING FOR 15 MONTHS, spent all my savings, etc. In short it was all bad, no good except now I can talk to people about the reality of bad landings from personal knowledge. Second, I bought a rig when I got my A license and the Sabre 2 190 canopy it came with was too small for me. I jumped it 25 times, and it kicked on me bad. I stood up 5 of 25 landings. All of those 25 landings were in good conditions, i.e. bright daylight, steady low winds, into the wind landings, large wide open landing area. My wing loading was just too high for my experience level so I swallowed my pride, got some advice from experienced jumpers, and upsized to a Sabre 2 210. Now I fly a wing loading I can handle and I have fun landing. Again, you are flying an unpowered glider now, so the ability to add power to maintain control is not available. Being an airplane pilot definitely helps, but piloting your canopy is enough different that it will take time to learn it. Your eagerness at your newfound sport may say "Just Go For It " but the stats say you will bust your ass if you downsize too aggressively. Blue Skies, Safe Landings!
