  2. Why is this debate based on the premise that gun ownership and common sense have to be mutually exclusive. Can someone recognize that a gun can be usefull if all else goes wrong yet not forfeit all good judgement and prudence the instant they are carrying? 3. Too true. Thugs are cowards who want a situation they are certain to dominate. There was a documentary on Bernard Goetz . For those who do not recall the name, he was the subway vigilante who shot four muggers who tried to rob him, and shot one of them as he tried to crawl away wounded saying "You look OK, heres another one" No-one knew who the shooter was for a week before Goetz turned himself in with his lawyer present. All anyone knew was that someone out there was prepared to shoot back. Anyway, one of the police inspectors involved in the case was being interviewed, and he said bluntly that during the week that Goetz was at large, there were almost no muggings/purse snatchings/violent assaults...etc. All the bad guys decided to stay at home that week. Once the guy who would shoot back was in police custody, the thugs went right back to business as usual. It's amazing how the threat of lead poisoning really does deflate the testicular fortitude of thugs who's courage is derived from being in a position of advantage. 6. I love it....almost. OK Don't get me wrong, I have always worked and never taken assistance, however I would be a little uncomfortable about issues like single mothers who are not able to work (I am all for going after the deadbeat dads but sometimes these guys are uselessly unemployed). I would be worried that young children would pay the price because of their useless parents. I like that! Great Makes perfect sense OK you have a pretty rock solid plan. I agree wholeheartedly with your view on taxation going to government beauracracies that create red tape ( Oh I just love hearing someone with common sense).......so should I expect you to be the first female POTUS someday?? Cheers and thank you for taking the time to debate this, Richards My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  7. I do not totally disagree with you in that I feel most ugly situations can be avoided with a little forethought. I also agree that many people shut off their brain when they have the ability to defend themselves with force. That said, I have learned from experience that no matter how carefull you are you cannot completely avoid finding yourself in a potentially dangerous situation. I have on occasion while minding my own business (granted walking home from work late at night) found myself to be the target of thugs who had the urge to "Fuck this guy up" simply because I was there. In all of these situations I was able to get myself out of it through quick calm thinking (and once through quick running). I still felt in each situation that I was not in complete control of my fate...I had some influence but at the end of the day my walking away alive was not completely in my hands. I have observed that many these thugs do understand the ability to apply force. When cornered, your perception that you are "intellectually above the need for violence" might not get you as far as you think. I deplore violence in all forms but I have personal experience that has taught me that sometimes turning the tables on such unsavoury characters can really influence the outcome of such an experience. 8. Fair enough. I feel there is at least inferential evidence that most common criminals and thugs will vote for a more liberal style government. Granted some white collar corporate criminals will likely be conservative/republican voters. Richards My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  9. Fair enough. Since we would rather not see people starve, what about an investment in developing human capital towards more productive uses? For example making University/College education more attainable so that people are more capable of developing the skills to earn a higher wage rather than depending on wage laws. What is your take on exporting that sort of work out to Mexico where it is more cohesive with their economy. If a farmer here cannot get people to work for him without hiring illegals because it is almost impossible to live on the wages he can afford to pay, then maybe the farmer himself should consider a new business. We are trying to keep industries alive which cannot sustain themselves without illegal workers. It would make more sense to let farming die off in the US and allow most of our produce to be imported from latin America while the US restructures it's economy and workforce to focus on more skilled industries. Again specialization in trade could benefit both the US and Mexico. The reality is that there are many unskilled labourers in the US and the issue of employment needs to be addressed. If you want to cut minimum wage so that salaries are based on what is competitive, then employers should be limitted to employing from the American workforce without employing illegal immigrants. If they cannot cope at the competitive wage (not government enforced) going on the market then those industries are not sustainable and should die off. Just my thoughts. Anyway let me know what you think. If you come up with a solution to this economic issue, I would gladly vote for you when you run for president. 10. That statement implies serious consequences for Jewish people and Muslims. Am I interpreting that correctly? Does Christianity propose that members of those two religions will burn for having followed those two religions. I am not trying to be provocational with that question; Its just that I am somewhat intrigued by this conversation and am curious about the hard questions. Thanks, Richards My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  11. In Toronto the thugs are getting a wee bit brazen for a few reasons >Citizens are unarmed >Our self defence laws are so ridiculous that you have to fight back using means that will almost guarantee that you will get killed. Do anything that gives you a realistic chance of surviving and your life will be ruined in both criminal court and civil court > Real criminals in Canada always get a slap on the wrist regardless of what they do because "they have disadvantaged backgrounds" I see criminal thugs as predatory cowards who will become real polite as soon as a conflict looks like it is even remotely a fair fight. Since our gang-bangers all carry guns the only way to make things fair is to arm the citizens. Untill that happens our thugs still have a pair of balls. I also question a government that wants it's citizens to be helpless. 12. See my response to Racer 42 on that same argument. WRT my saying liberals don't like gun laws I was refering to liberal/democrat politicians. They are inherently more likely to expect people to let the state protect them than allow people to protect themselves. I was really not attacking people with liberal values yet since you are the second person to take it that way I clearly must have come across that way. I am sorry if my comment was interpreted as an attack on liberal minded people What kind of club? 13. I realize the logic behind your argument and it has validity, however I am not sure how someone could survive at $2.25 and hour. Never mind not being able to rent your own appartment, you will not even be able to afford to share accomodations at the going rental costs in most cities or towns, never mind being able to pay for food. If paying a sustainable rate for farming is unrealistic in the US then perhaps farming might be something best suited for Mexico where the cost of living is extremely low, and the US should focus on developing higher paying industries. It is about specialization in trade (one of the desired aims of NAFTA), and the US is gradually becoming less of a resource based economy. It's not that your argument does not hold up in traditional economic theory, it does. The problem is that basic macroeconomics is based greatly on many assumptions and ignores human realities. realistically $2,25 an hour will not sustain anyone in the US to the best of my knowledge. Looking forward to your perspective on this. Cheers, Richards My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.

  16. Illogical response. Saying "criminals will always vote democrat" is not the same as saying "all democrat voters are criminals". Richards My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  17. Yes. I find it critical to be pessimistic. Every time in my life where I started being optimistic, circumstances kicked me in the teeth. If I always assume the worst things tend to turn out OK. 19. I am somewhat in agreement. While I accept that we eat animals (being a vegetarian would kill me!!), I do think we have an obligation to ensure the animals are dealt with in a humane manner. For example, the details about how veal calfs were treated turned me off of eating it. I am sure there are many other abuses that I am unaware of so I am probably being hypocritical, but to the extent of my knowledge I avoid supporting needlessly cruel treatment of animals. 20. I agree that having an unrealistically high minimum wage can adversely affect the willingness of employers to hire legal workers, and therefore minimum wage should truly be the minimum that one can sustain themselves on. Eliminating the minimum wage however could have serious secondary consequences, in that you will create mass poverty on your lower skilled workers. It is tantamount to saying "to avoid having business owners import third worlders we should turn our own low skilled citizens into third worlders". This would result in more people just going on welfare or turning to criminal activity to supplement thier income, which will have negative effects on the US. Your point does have merit but as an advanced society we can at least ensure that our weakest members are able to sustain themselves in lower end jobs. A middle ground solution that alleviates the burden of excess costs to employers while not turning our lower skilled workers into third worlders is required. 21. Thanks for the feedback. I do not mean to pester you with a million questions but I am not very religious so I really can plead ignorance on many of the questions I am asking you. Many religions claim that their specific religion is the only true path and that all others will lead a person to hell. This even goes on within christian based religions. Some christians have said that catholics will burn in hell, some catholics have said that protestants will burn in hell. What is your take on this? If lets say for the sake of argument that christians are right and catholics are wrong. If someone has spent thier entire life being faithfull to their beliefs and worshipping God in the manner that they beleive is the best while submitting to his word as they understand it, will he burn them for an eternity because they had the misfortune of being brought up in the wrong religion? It seems scary because every religion say's that and they all have scriptures in their bible to support their claim. Can someone who in their heart is faithfull to god be eternaly punished for a misenterpretation? 23. It's brilliant! If some shitbird rapist is dumb enough, to put his most valued possession between his intended victims teeth, then his victim is in a position where not only can she make sure he does not rape her but can never rape anyone again. 24. So are the libs..... Naturally, How are hard working criminals supposed to prey on the innocent to earn their daily bread when their targets are not defenceless. As for Liberals/Democrats, of couse their upset. Criminals vote for them. If the rapists and thugs who can be counted on to vote liberal/democrat start becoming extinct due to lead poisoning, the libs/democrats will feel some pain in the next election.
