"fully" is contradicted by "wherever reasonable." Likewise, "freedom of expression" can't be reconciled with some fuzzy standard of reasonable. Freedom isn't free. Morally it has responsibilities, but legally it means taking the bad with the good. Taken to extreme that can mean that if I am a racist I have the right to speak use racial slurs when talking to minorities in any environment. Is there a point where you might feel that ones freedom to express themselves crosses the line into harrasment, or is anything fair game? I find sometimes what is frustrating about these discussions is that people see everything from a black and white dogmatic interpretation of our rights without any consideration for responsibilities. I fully support freedom of expression wherever reasonable but is there not a line to be drawn between harrasment and freedom of speech? They have the right to protest but would it be unreasonable to require them to do so in a manner that does not so directly interfere with the families mourning? Such thinking is step 1 in warfare. First you must dehumanize the enemy. We don't want to go over there and kill other people. It's much easier to accept/do if we're just killing Japs, Krauts, Gooks, and Ragheads. Certainly. I can appreciate the that the guy on the front line needs to do that in order to desensitize himself to the things he must do to survive. That said, we need to be carefull to not to allow that kind of thinking to dominate our perspective. Those ideas can only be justified by someone who is serving on the front lines, not anyone here in the comfort and safety of North America. Terribly sorry to hear that this woman has put you through this stress and involved your stepdaughter. I hope that your lawyers can sort this out with minimal stress/cost and perhaps her mom should be forced to seek some sort of counselling (if not face some charges as I am sure that what she did must be illegal). Hope things work out. Richards My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.

Harsh. I can justify dehumanizing an individual based on his/her actions (ie killing a confirmed terrorist is not like killing a human) but to generalize an entire nationality/ethnicity like that as being non-human has frightenning implications. Such thinking has been the fuel for many of the worst atrocities in history. Since the Phelps Family are so keen of the right of free speech & assembly, I'm sure they wouldn't object to a 24/7 demonstration outside their homes. Perhaps celebrating the music of Marilyn Manson, Eminem, Alice Cooper, etc... played continuously & loud as an expression of the demonstrators' beliefs. I'd be willing to bet that in the circumstances, such a demonstration would be accepted (even supported) by neighbours, and that the police would attend to ensure that there was no breach of the law.*** It would be nice if it actually turned out that way, but I doubt it would because that would make too much sense. I do not understand why, but it always seems that "rights" apply only to jackasses, yet when you try to beat a jackass at his/her own game, the very system which stands by allowes them to act like that will suddenly start intervening when you do it in return. I am only basing this heuristically on personall experience, and I am sure there is some section of some legal code that someone can quote to me to prove me wrong. I do not know enough about the inner workings of CSIS to agree/disagree with that, but I can take your word on it. Wrong. Ahmed Reesam was caught at the US border after having been watched by US officials not Canadian authorities. His presence in Canada turned out to be a bit of an embarrasment to us. I was not intending to bash the efforts (and accomplishments) of our intelligence service so much as the policies of our government which make it harder for such services to do thier job. Sorry if it came across as an attack on CSIS. Our Conservative government has not been in power long enough to implement any measures that are satisfying to the US administration, however they have at least acknowledged the need to cooperate more closely on such issues. Those who think every gov't in the world is heading down the same path as the Nazi's are perhaps a bit paranoid.*** Too true! We live in a state of paranoid fear of the very institutions that try to protect us. I agree that there should be some oversight but we need to stop obsessing about "Big Brother" Richards My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within. -

That has got to be a fake. What would be the purpose of having him stand there when it could simply be propped up? Richards My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.

Our government in Canada has been quite complacent with respect to security so I would not be surprised to see that there are quite a few more out there. Given that the Taliban just recently issued an ultimatum to Canada to get our troops out of Afghanistan I expect that this is not the last of it. We cannot get crawfish up here in Canada yet I here people from the southern US raving about it. Is there a comparable item you could liken it to, such as shrimp? Or is it something that cannot be described to someone who has never tried it? Also if I am ever in the south how is it best served if I should order it (steamed, breaded etc...)? Those with low self esteem compensate with alter ego fantasy. If I had a dollar for every guy who told me he was a Navy Seal, SAS, Connected with the Mafia,....etc I could retire with millions. They are entertaining though. Richards My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.

You just described me perfectly. I always mean well but whenever I try to offer condolences to someone I always trip over my own words like a complete ass and make the person feel worse. As insensitive as it may seem I find that my best course of action is to not say anything. If skydiving was not dangerous. Do you think it would still be as fun.

When I did my first jump I was somewhat motivated by a sense of machismo but the thing that got me interested in staying with the sport had nothing to do with anything so silly. I loved the feel of jumping just for the fun of it, and I enjoyed the comraderie.
