  1. and this is a surprise? I'd be prepared to bet that almost all of those disagreeing with the statement are quite able to take care of themselves. That might shed some light on why "people at the lower end of the income scale give almost 30 percent more of their income", than the wealthy. Here's another kicker:
  2. Like? Particularly, I'd like to hear about "goings on" that might cause passengers to fear for their safety, that went unaddressed by those in charge.
  3. I had to read that 3 times, and now I'm winded. This is getting silly. It got silly when people started claiming "they were just praying".
  4. So, if you were on that plane and witnessed all the goings on, you would have been indifferent?
  5. As I think other people have addressed, this issue is about whether or not there is a consistent standard for funding. A few years back, UNC-Chapel Hill pulled funding for a Christian group because the group had a requirement that the group's leaders must subscribe to a Christian faith. The group sued the school and won. I'm not sure but I think it was discovered that the criteria impresse on that Christian group, wasn't required of a number of other student organizations.
  6. Bill, Based on what you've read about this incidendent, do you think the passengers and flight crew were completely unjustified about being alarmed by the behavior of these six men?
  7. The major "differentiator" was that, in addition to merely praying, they did it in a loud manner (which would obviously attract attention) and voiced anti-American sentiments, they disregarded their seat assignments, instead choosing seats similar to 9/11 hijackers, which would make controlling a plane easier and asked for an un-needed seatbelt extension. Nothing suspicious here, folks. Move along. I find it hard to believe so many people think the behavior of those men wouldn't (justifiably) cause major concerns from passengers and flight personel.
  8. Has anyone in this thread brought up the recently released study, "Gun Laws and Sudden Death"? It concluded that the 1996 Australian gun buy back program, which cost 500 million dollars, has had virtually zero impact on the number gun deaths.
  9. Christians and political ideologues are not a racial group, but groups joined together be shared ideals. It's OK to criticize ideas, but not race. Simple, really. Our civil rights laws equally protect against racial and religious discrimination. So, why is it open season on one, while the other is completely off limits? It seems like certain types of bigotry is completely acceptable.
  10. WINNER! Thanks for playing, everyone. The show's over.
  11. People didn't get upset because the men were Arabs, but because the men acted in specific ways that played to peoples fears. From what I've read, these men men acted in specific ways that played to peoples fears... both in their words and actions before boarding and their actions once on the plane. This was clearly something more than six men praying.
  12. This comes across as a bit of cherry picking. For most of our history, immigrants made a serious effort to learn English and adapt to American culture. Almost all children of immigrants were fully assimilated. In those communities that native heritage was apparent, people still spoke english. Today, there are numerous exceptions. The number of exceptions is growing. The overwhelming majority of immigrants that came into this country each year, came in through legal means. I guess one way to study this matter is to look percentage of english-as-a-second-language Americans for each year, over the last 50 years. I'm guessing that figure has climbed dramatically over the last 15 years.
  13. Did anyone catch John Stossel on 20/20 last night? Here's a promo column: http://www.abcnews.go.com/2020/story?id=2682730&page=1
  14. I guess I should have written "The leadership of these countries support the expansion of varying forms of Pan-Islamism and/or Pan-Arabism." It seems you are more interested in just shooting down my points (pun intended) by whatever means, rather than responding to them. Toodles
  15. And the US supported Saddam during the same war. Do you think the United States and Iraq (under Saddam) are philosophically similar? If so, please elaborate. If not, how can Libya's support of Iran during that war be used to link the two countries philosophically? The US supported Iraq because the sitting administration thought it was in our best interests to do so. What was the benefit to Libya in supporting Iran. I notice you only addressed a portion of my reply. If you consider the other factors I mentioned you might be able to answer your own questions.
  16. Libya supported Iran in the Iran-Iraq war. The leadership of both countries support the expansion of Pan-Islamism and Pan-Arabism. Both countries have been accused of being sponsors of terrorism. There are definitely some major factors linking the two countries.
  17. So man-made CO2 is causing temperatures to drop?
  18. You did point that out. Sorry I didn't acknowledge that in my previous post. Darius, I think most reasonable people have numerous reasons/rationales for supporting any given cause. If one of those reasons is proven untrue, that may weaken their support, but it doesn't necessarily cancel it out altogether. Regarding our invasion of Iraq, I think you will find a large portion of those who initially backed Bush's decision to invade Iraq, who now think it was a bad decision. My point to you is I've seen a number of claims about Bush that don't hold water. When someone makes one, I ask for proof.
  19. In other words, unsupported hearsay... from one person... in a private meeting. The two leaders at that meeting deny those alleged statements were made. To me, that's a far cry from "We have a president who tells us GOD wanted him to go in to Iraq."
  20. When did he tell us what you claim?
  21. I wonder why it's acceptable in our society to make harsh attacks against many groups of people, even to the extent of making dishonest stereotypes, but it's taboo to make similar criticisms of blacks. Can you imagine the backlash if people verbally attacked blacks the same way people attack Christians or political ideologues?
  22. WTF? The link you provided made no mention of white Christian women causing the crashes.
