I dont know what Vegas likes in particular, but for video editing in general, you want a core i5 quadcore or better yet a core i7 CPU. Get the sandy bridge version, or the triple channel older i7s (socket 1366, these might actually be better for video editing than the sandy bridge i7). Get a motherboard to match. If you want to overclock a sandy bridge you need the K version of the CPU and the P chipset ont he motherboard, if you don't want to overclock but want the onboard VGA get the H version chipset). Then get a lot of RAM. Like, 12/16 GB or more. Speed is not that important, the amount is. Preferably buy all of it at once, as a kit, so they are from the same batch. Harddrives, the usual: 1 7200 rpm harddrive for windows, 1 bigger 7200 rpm drive for the video files, plus 1 for the scratchdrives. If you want to splash get an SSD for the OS drive but that won't speed up your editing just make working with the pc a lot more pleasant. For graphics, if you run premiere pro cs5 or 5.5 there's a range of cards that will speed up editing a bunch, but usually graphics don't matter much when video editing, no need to buy the latest and the greatest card. PSU, get a decent brand one, and wattage is mostly dependant on your graphics card. But the latest CPUs and the amount of RAM do need more than the minimum. Make sure the used PSUs are OK to use, also (if they're older) makle sure they fit yourmotherboard plug-wise. The case needs to fit your motherboard (uATX or ATX, whatever you buy, not all cases fit both). You will also need 2 DVD burners, 2 monitors, mouse, keyboard, speakers, and a fast cardreader. And of course you need a 64bit windows, not 32bit, to use all the memory. ciel bleu, Saskia

A few weeks ago at our DZ we (2 videoflyers) were having the same questions Both of us have filmed tandems and 4way, mostly. I got drafted to fill in filming sequentials (8/9 way non-linked exits) and the other videoflyer was filming "real" 8way. Both from grand caravans. I just tried stuff: click. The leading exit I was a bit too early on 2 jumps, 1 was fine, at least I never was late... Tried 1 peeling exit too, decided to change my heading back on that jump, no idea if that's the idea or not . The other flyer was peeling at first (to avoid hitting the team or leaving too early) but got told by the coach to lead. Not easy... He ended up hitting the team once at least. So, peeling is definitely easier. But harder for the coach. If you figure out the trick to lead right, let me know ciel bleu, Saskia

Wearing Vibram Five Fingers while Skydiving?
dragon2 replied to hokierower's topic in Gear and Rigging
A few jumpers at my DZ jump in them. But like mentioned before, as a new jumper you want shoes that provide you some protection (in fact, in my country it's mandatory that you have "solid" shoes up to your A). Jumping with nikes for now is a lot more sensible. Save the fingers for later on. ciel bleu, Saskia -
True though, I've revived a number of beepers/digi altis by first removing the battery, then after leaving the unit for a night, inserting a fresh battery - the right way up!!! and without touching it with your bare fingers. Some batteries are just bad right from the start, some units need to "decharge", and a good number of people do manage to insert the battery the wrong side up. So, I don't think L&B's suggestion is a bad one at all. ciel bleu, Saskia

As an example, at my DZ we generally fly into the wind. However, if there's little wind or a LOT of wind and especially if the upper winds are from the south, we fly perpendicular. This gives everyone a chance to reach the DZ, and in the case of wind from the south, gives everyone a chance on clearing the runway and the glider runway at 2000/1500 ft. We still have the same exit order in place. It makes sense to keep it the same allways, to avoid confusion and to make last minute changes in jumprun possible without the "airplane shuffle" you might get otherwise. ciel bleu, Saskia

+1 Vigils scare me way more than jumping with (or without) my Argus. ciel bleu, Saskia

I forgot, while turbulence didn't play a role in the above incident, I still have some interesting video of a landing on the 1 jump our 9 way did on sunday. Click (it's the last bit, after my logo @4:01). ciel bleu, Saskia

So, over here we teach students to have a ROT landing (CRAP landing). R = rechtuit (straight ahead, canopy level) O = obstacle free T = tegen de wind (against the wind) (hmm, LOW landing?) Last weekend we had a good amount of wind. Including enough turbulence that sat afternoon/sun afternoon a lot of people (including me) ended up sitting down. The preferred landing spot sat/sun was just over the ditches. So, a few people ended up not giving themselves enough room to CLEAR those ditches + barbed wire, in that wind. One or two landed on the field next to ours, others just made it (). This one girl was going to land in the ditches, going straight down. She has a couple hundred jumps, she flies a 170 sabre or something similar and is fairly lightweight. Still, trying to avoid said ditches by doing a panic s-turn @ ~30ft into the other field had her ending up with both lower legs bones broken twice. Please, just land in the d*mn ditch everyone, if you have to. This ended badly but could've ended much much worse. Try to have that crap landing ciel bleu, Saskia

Like the label says, it's a Surfair, made by Parachutes de France. This is an ancient canopy (might be a label on it, my guess is 1985-ish), probably 220 sqft, made of F111 fabric, and very probably not airworthy (by condition, the age alone is prohibitive enough for most riggers/countries), even if someone would want to jump an old F111 canopy at all. Try putting it on ebay and selling it as a car cover/decoration non-airworthy canopy, that's basically your only option. ciel bleu, Saskia

How are the handles set up on that? Do you have any closer pictures? I just did the "I gotta new suit" shot , and I didn't really take that good a look at the suit (other than, holy smoke that's BIG I'll stick to my blade thanx very much). It's "just" a suit around a skydiving rig though. You could ask ParaShoot for more info, it's his suit. ciel bleu, Saskia

For SL, you might just want to buy some coveralls (like, from a farmer store). Make sure they don't fit too loose (a bit floppy is fine), and are not orange or red in color (ie are contrasting with your cutaway pillow). ciel bleu, Saskia

We have a helmet company here in The Netherlands that makes custom helmets, maybe that's an option for you. http://www.speedylee.net/ ciel bleu, Saskia

A coaching qualification? That'll get you free (working) jumps... If you want to work in skydiving, become a tandemmaster or packer, that's your best bet. Or, do video + AFF + tandem (+ rigger if you can). AFAIK, a TM or AFF rating from one country can usually be converted to another country, provided you have the experience under your belt. All of these ratings/qualifications (except packing) require a few years in the sport and 500-1000 jumps at least. There're no shortcuts... Even when already working in skydiving, almost all professional skydivers I know have a "real" job next to their skydiving job. ciel bleu, Saskia
