  1. I've done a couple hundred jumps on Hornets (170 and a 150) and I haven't been able to stall either of them without using the rear risers. Also, both of my Hornets have had quite large sliders and I've never had even close to a hard opening with them.
  2. We jump after safety day activities are finished, if the weather is good. Then again, we have safety day a couple of weeks before our season starts, so we probably wouldn't be jumping anyway.
  3. I've only jumped 10 kinds of canopies (not including those I was a tandem passenger under), but I'd have to say my least favorite was the Safire2 149. I had it for 2 weekends to demo, but after 10 jumps on it the first weekend, I gave it to a friend and put my Hornet 170 back into my rig.
  4. I do read these things ya know!!
  5. I did the discover scuba thing in the bahamas a couple years ago, and it was like what you are describing Brian. Also, last year when I did my open water course there were discover scuba students there every day that just did a really brief training session then went on the same dive. Don't know anything about Florida though.
  6. Skydive K-State in Wamego, Kansas is quite affordable. I think static line jumps there are $39 each, and gear rental is about $25 per semester.
  7. My home dropzone's smallet student gear was 230 when I got my license too. I was doing RW so I was the first group out of the Otter, and I was landing after the AFF students and if there wasn't a go-around I was landing after the tandems and the plane. It wasn't unsafe (but the rig wasn't falling off of me, just uncomfortable and large), just really annoying. After I got my license the DZO put together a rig with at 175 in it for me to rent (I also weigh 110). Since then, that rig has gotten a lot of use. If it really bothers you, come visit us - Tecumseh is right down the road from Napoleon.
  8. I also jump in Michigan, and we either suck it up and get really really cold (not me!), or we travel to warmer places to jump. Last month a bunch of Michigan jumpers went to the Orlando area for jumping in 75+ degree weather, and next month we're going to Arizona.
  9. I have a PISA Hornet 150 and a PDR 160 in my rig right now - really like both of them, but I have an Aerodyne Pilot 132 sitting in my closet that I can't wait to jump once the season starts back up in May.

  11. I wouldn't mind doing a pickup team on Saturday, have never been on an actual team, but generally end up as "inside center" around my DZ.
  12. 13. Last I heard it's going to be in Lebanon, Ohio. That's kind of between Dayton and Cincinnati. It's announced on the Air Rage website http://www.airrageskydiving.com/ar/ in the Around the Bonfire section of the Forum.
  14. Mine only shrinks when it starts getting really cold here... when I return to warm weather, it returns to its original size. It does seem to grow a bit in the middle part when I jump with really slow people and let them borrow my lead.
  15. I will most likely downsize both my container and my reserve, though not within the next year or so. However, I will be downsizing from a 160 loaded at around 0.85 (which I bought when I had
  16. Are we counting what my mom spent on tuition for my first semester of grad school and called a graduation present? If so, then probably more than $1,000 but less than $3,000.
  17. My goals for 2007: 1) Find a new canopy and work on my canopy skills 2) Take a USPA coach course 3) Go to WFFC and do lots of jumps with the organizers 4) Get in at least 150 jumps 5) At least 2 tunnel trips 6) Stay safe, finish the year still in one piece
  18. It may or may not matter to you, but remember that you're going to be (hopefully) touching those handles a lot when practicing your EPs, so they may start out bright white, but they probably won't stay that way long.
  19. Tecumseh does still have their 182s around for the winter, and will be doing jumps for experienced jumpers as weather permits (call to check if it's a weekend and the weather looks good). They don't generally do student jumps after the end of October though - their staff aren't scheduled to work, and they don't keep their student gear in date over the winter. Have you checked with AerOhio near Cleveland? I know they were still jumping earlier this week.
  20. I took my first high school class before (as in earlier the same day) I started middle school.
  21. Used gear is great advice for your first rig, but that doesn't mean you can't demo several canopies first to see which one you prefer. You may find that you like them all, which opens up your options for used gear. Or you may find one you don't like, and it's better to find that out before you buy it!
  22. Are you tutoring through some school/organization, or is it set up privately? Sometimes I tutor algebra and trig for extra $$. I just do it online through tutor.com - it doesn't pay as well as some other setups, but it's easy and I'm lazy
  23. I started a Roth IRA with USAA a couple of years ago. I just picked a couple of things that my mother said were good choices since she knows much more about these things than I do. That and a couple of CDs are about all I have because I'm 24, a full time student, and haven't actually had a real job yet.
  24. If you think a 190 main is too small, what makes you think a 175 reserve is appropriate??
  25. I voted for the one just over $75,000, but I agree that it depends very much on where you live (ie. how much housing costs) and also whether you are single, married, have kids, etc.
