  1. There will be new toys on the 28th. The iMac and MacBook Pro will remain untouched, but additional goodies are on the way. I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  2. I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  3. Is there a way - when writing out the terms of a license - to explicitly require that certain specifications be duplicated identically or not at all? For example, the three-ring system is mechanically simple - big rings always like to work. But change some specifications up for mini rings and loose tolerances can suddenly cause big issues. The Skyhook is not nearly as simple... with so many more essential parts and specifications, any thoughtful modification by a manufacturer could fubar the whole thing. Can one legally prevent this? Make the Skyhook just like this or don't make it at all? I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  4. Give this site a whirl while you're waiting for more responses. I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  5. Thanks for clarifying, didn't realize the quote was old I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  6. What country? I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  7. Yeah, that's what you can expect from your MacBook... with the exception of the hard drive speed and graphics card capabilities. The HD will be the only one that has an effect on your photo work and it won't be major. I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  8. The iPod-to-Camera connecter is exactly what you want. I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  9. The explanation goes back to the old "MHz Myth". Just because something has bigger numbers attached to it does not mean that it's faster. The current Duo processors used by Apple and PC companies alike are significantly faster than Intel's previous offerings... even if those previous offerings [read: P4] had bigger numbers [read: 3+GHz] attached to them. The example you made for yourself - AMD vs Intel - fits perfectly. It's not that they [AMD] use some magical algorithm that makes a seemingly "slower" processor faster, it's that the numbers don't always tell the story. Many companies - including Apple, AMD, Sun, etc - have described their own [shockingly similar] explanation for the MHz myth. While the clock speed of two identical processors is a great tool to measure their speeds relative to each other, different types of processors work in such different ways that there is no way to compare without having a good 'ol fashioned Photoshop bake-off or gigantic-video-file-render-race. Now, the current duo chips are not meant to compete with the old "top of the line" chips. The duo is a faster "mid-high range" processor. So the top of the line [P4/AMD/Power Mac G5] will still be faster than the current fastest Duo. That's not a failing on Intel's part, it's just that the duo is not meant to be the fastest processor out there. It's merely the first of a new generation. I hope that adds a little clarity. I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  10. One thing I've found in my short time [I'm new to skydiving but I've been loosely involved in the BASE community for about 4 years] is that the source of the difficulty for newcomers to accept the "no naming" rule [not just on these forums but in general] comes from a fairly understandable place. BASE is young, no matter how you look at it. Many folks out there are first or second generation jumpers... "pioneers"... or those mentored by "pioneers". When they started, there wasn't nearly as much heat. Sites were named for many reasons. The community was small! Almost everybody knew everybody. People were still figuring stuff out. Nobody was afraid that somebody with the wrong equipment and no experience would flick it off of their local A... because that's exactly what they were doing. So the sport grows and there is an undeniable need to move on from these roots. Everything is different from those days... the people, the equipment, the mindset, the heat and the publicity. So what are newcomers to do? They look back on the sport's history and see something entirely different than what they're being told. The direction that things are heading is undeniably better than where they were, but it's effectively a transition period. Even those who are [heavy quotes] "making the rules" aren't fully certain of what to recommend. And, of course, it's best to err on the side of safety. When people run a public forum, well, more so. It's like a teenager asking his parents why he isn't allowed to go out at night. They were allowed to go out when they were his age, why can't he??? Well, things are different. So there's another angle. Obviously consider the source, but that's a little sliver of what I've noticed in my minute experience. I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  11. Yeah, I hear he's kind of a geek. I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  12. This is pretty normal for Apple releasing big new products. They'll ship them at the last possible moment and there will be delays for months. It's happened time and time again. In the past, Motorola and IBM couldn't produce processors to meet demand. Hopefully Intel isn't doing the same. I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  13. My honest bet is that they wanted it to be 1.83 and 2.16 off the bat, but Intel couldn't promise shipments of the faster processor. They announced different specs, knowing that bumping the speed will be handled better than dropping the speed. Years ago Motorola screwed up and couldn't get 500MHz processors in time... so they had to back off to 450MHz at the high end. Lesson learned. I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  14. ...which is really all this thread has become. I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  15. Most likely "if we can offer more bang for the same buck, why not?" I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  16. Many BASE jumpers consider their canopy a reserve, considering its opening performance and care of packing. "Why not jump a Sorcerer?" "I don't need two reserves!" [BASE canopies are different than reserves, it's just the concept] I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  17. Well, if you want a MacBook Pro now, you'll get a faster machine [2.16 or 1.83] for the same price. I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  18. I believe that RWS actually loses money on every sport rig sold. I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  19. If one cannot handle instability in the air with an instructor present, I fear what will happen when they are alone. Says the 48 jump wonder. I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  20. Aperture is like iPhoto Pro. I STRONGLY suggest you go to an Apple Store and try the software for a significant amount of time before you make a decision. The software is perfect for a narrow spectrum of photographers and overkill [or underkill] for others. That said, I use it. I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  21. What a compelling and realistic representation of BASE jumpers. I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  22. BASE Zone Forum Posting Guidelines: Before you start a thread in the BASE Zone Forum or reply to a post please consider the guidelines below: Do not name or give locations of BASE sites. Do not post photographs identifying BASE sites. Please read the thread on specific names before posting to this forum. I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  23. Legally, I believe the altitude is 14,000 feet above sea level [ASL] without oxygen. If your dropzone is above sea level [Perris is about 1,500 feet ASL, for example], they can't go as high [12,500' at Perris, as the example]. A hop 'n pop [LALO] is most common for canopy control and landings. If the purpose of the skydive is to work on a new landing technique, why bother going all the way to the top? Save some money, get out low and get your canopy/landing practice in. Many dropzones allow full-altitude hop 'n pops, generally for CRW jumping. Ask your instructors or manifest once you're farther along. I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  24. No, but you can pull higher until you're comfortable. You *will* pull high as a student and you are welcome to continue doing so afterwards [as long as you let everybody know and exit in the right order]. I really don't know what I'm talking about.
