I had a 129 that was on the short list (grounded)... I had the line mod done and when I got it back I did not like it at all. The openings were not hard, just a little more twitchy. My biggest problem with it was the riser pressure... I could do pull-ups on them without causing a turn or dive... In short it no longer had the characteristics I bought it for... I now have a 119 that never required the mod, and it is much better... slightly higher riser pressure than my original one (pre-mod) but still acceptable. I missed that line... you are right, the 120 has better resolution... don't know if you will be able to see it on a standard TV though, maybe on HD... I don't know that it is worth the extra $... All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

I own 2 Velicities, a 103 loaded @ ~2.1 and a 96 @ ~2.25... I have jumped both in competition (most recently at the PSN)... as others have said it depends on what you want... the 2.1 gives great distance with reasonable speed, the 2.25 has great speed with reasonable distance... If you are on a budget get the lighter loading and then adjust it with weights if you want. Josh All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

The Velocity likes to dance during the snivel... if you try to control it too much it will spin on you... I use a pro pack, square the slider, then set the nose even with everything else (not tucked in), then will pull the center cell out a little... it will still dance around, but will stay within about 90^ of on heading (at least mine does)... opens soft as a dream... I jump cameras (a lot of them) so that is important. So again, pro pack with nose set in the center, squared slider and center cell pulled out a bit... it is what works for me... Swoop Noodles, what's your thoughts? Good idea/bad idea?
jdhill replied to LawnDart21's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I got mine at Walmart... hit the end of the summer clearance sale and bought all they had for something like $1.50 each. Josh All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke -
Swoop Noodles, what's your thoughts? Good idea/bad idea?
jdhill replied to LawnDart21's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I set up a noodle course about a year ago at Spaceland... they work great... make sure to get the "moster noodles", the thin ones will not stand up very long when subjected to heat and any wind... the initial idea was to set a lane away from the beer line, right on the edge of the main landing area... the biggest problem we had was that several of the "non-swoopers" (could also be called landing challenged) would end up in the lane and not get out (set the breaks, unstow the slider, yada yada)... bottom line though... it was a good swoop course for those on a budget. She was in every round, just never touched the water... apparently she got hurt pretty bad in last year's event, it appeared she was a little gun shy and kept plaining out high and never touched the water until the last round (raft)... and she missed the raft so no points... She kept trying though... showed a lot of spirit. Josh All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

constructive criticism is ok... just can't yell at them... work on this, try to get this shot - ok... you suck, man you f#$#ed that up, I can't believ you call yourself a cameraman - not ok... I've seen a "team" yell at a pick-up camera guy for being late to a plane they did not bother to tell him he was supposed to be on... that does not qualify as contructive to a guy that ain't being paid. Guess what... that "team" jumped for the rest of the day w/ no camera because no one, not even the paid guys, would jump camera for them. Travel, lodging, and a set fee per day is the usual deal (maybe some other stuff too)... its something that needs DZ support (ie a jumper could not just set it up unless they were Mr. Moneybags)... Jim can provide a seminar proposal to the DZ if asked... you can find his contact info @ www.para-performance.com Anyone been swooping good 'ole Lake Vandalia? I believe what I said (or at least meant to say) was that they cannot reasonably be held acceptable for bad camera flying if they were NOT being paid or NOT having the slot covered... if they ARE being paid or the slot is covered, feel free to debrief their work... The pick-up guy that is doing it for free is really just doing a favor, and unless he/she jeopardizes the safety or interferes with the skydive the most you should do is say "thanks for the effort but we'll find someone else." If it is the unusual case where the video guy is doing it for free as a team member then their work should be debriefed as well. As for the video guy/gal partaking in the pre-jump rituals, I think it is appropriate... to do good video you need to be in sync w/ the team... the rhythm of the practice count should be identical to the rhythm of the actual count... having that is critical to leaving at the right time... btw, many videographers do touch the team and leave at the same time... with many teams you can feel the count as well as you can see it. Just my opinion... Josh All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

How 'bout a course set up leading to the beer... you have 5' gates and you get bonus seconds for every gate you pass through... the beer is the target at the end of the course... if you swoop past the beer you loose time getting back to the beer. The accuracy guy would not have the benifit of the bonus points, and a good swoop could actually result in a negative time. SCM 5-1.3: TEAM COMPOSITION A. 4-Way: Each team may consist of up to six members, including a videographer, but is eliminated from competition if, for any reason, it is cut to three or fewer members and a videographer. IMO, the videographer is a member of the team. You can't compete without them, and if you want consistantly judgable video you need to use the same one regularly... the same cannot be said for coaches and packers, although they are definitely a benifit to training and competing well. You can pick up video people (and other jumpers for that matter) @ nationals, but there will be issues if you don't get in some jumps before hand (exits will be the most noticable), and unless you know the videographer, you don't know what you are going to get... As for the pay issue, there is a lot of $$$ in those helmets and suits, and not everyone is willing or able to fly camera (its not just falling straight down)... Bottom line for me is... if you don't want to consider them a team member, or pay them, find one that you don't need to, and take what you get... but remember their not part of your team so don't expect them to show up on time, show up when its raining, and don't yell at them for screwing up, because they were just doing you a favor. If you treat them as part of the team, you should be able to expect the same things you expect out any other team member... be there on time, do their part, etc... Just my opinion. more premiere help and a rendering question
jdhill replied to Snowflake's topic in Photography and Video
Premier loves RAM... if you can throw more at it, do. As for rendering, I like to render as I go, and never render out the final file until I know everything is where I want it, that is if I render out a final file at all... I will export to my camera instead... not sure why your transitions are not showing... good luck Josh All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke -
I don't have my editing computer in front of me, but you may need to use the "Save for Web" function under the file menu... that should launch Cleaner EZ which should give you a MPEG option. Josh All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

for 4-way I tend to use a following exit, sometimes I'll use what Quade refered to as the semi-peel. These two exits are a good defense at the team that starts the count, then resets, because you don't go on anything but their exit. They will aslo lessen the chance of having a video bust because your angle is too steep to see all the grips or lack there of. I learned that lesson the hard way, at nationals when I cost the team a point (at least it did not cost us a medal)... Just look out for the burble when following, it is easy to be right on it when you leave. Thanks for the comments on my site, and good luck with your team.
