  2. That's what my guy is talking about doing... What's better? We are all engines of karma
  3. I had the same kind of questions when I installed central A/C in my house. I'm guessing your existing ducts are for forced heat? Mine are, and I've had central A/C for a couple of years now. Since the density of cold air is significantly different from hot air, you'll soon know where all the leaks are in your duct work. I had the guy install a pretty powerful system to handle pushing the cold air up from the basement. Right now, my basement is a freezer when the system is up, but not so much for the rest of my house. Next step is to install some kind of boosters in my duct work to help push the cold air to the end of my house. FYI... We are all engines of karma

  7. Yeah, there is nothing special about our species in the scale of the universe as we know it. No way our planet is the only one with life on it. I kind of wish we'd stop deliberately advertising our presence, though. If someone does show up, it could get ugly and I seriously doubt we'd stand any kind of chance against them, if push came to shove (...which I expect to happen in that case). Far too many religions riding on our "being special". We are all engines of karma
  8. This made me think about my time on grand jury duty here in Westchester, New York, several years back. It turned out to be quite the experience (...actually, kind of horrifying, there are some truly bad people in this world...). There were two young black men that actually came in and talked to us, after being busted for several small rocks of crack cocaine (~2 grams?). These were guys who made some mistakes. They weren't thugs, and were on a path to try to make something out of their lives. In New York State, 0.5 grams (...yes, 0.5 grams) of crack cocaine is a FELONY, and you are fucked for the rest of your life. I couldn't believe it. The system simply wasted those two guys' lives, and needlessly. They will never be able to get a "professional level" job, and both could have done so, IMO. We are all engines of karma
  9. Agreed, it needs to be global..., preferably with as many responsible market participants as possible. We are all engines of karma
  10. Giving the UN control over any of it will be a big mistake, IMO. We are all engines of karma
  11. In no way have I said it's an insignificant problem. I do not think it's a good idea to keep pumping a lot of CO2 into the atmosphere. It just not a problem that is going to be fixed by imposing increased government control and taxation over the US, IMO. We are all engines of karma
  12. It's a test, DanG. When someone is claiming this as an issue, I like to see how much they've actually looked into it. You'd be surprised how many "climate activists" don't know this number. Most of them don't have a clue... We are all engines of karma
  13. The 0.0004 number is the weight fraction of CO2 in the atmosphere. The 0.0008 number is double the current weight fraction of C02 in the atmosphere. It will take roughly 100 years at projected CO2 emissions for that number to go from 0.0004 to 0.0008. The IPCC report's "sensitivity" estimate's lower bound continues to decrease with each report. Right now, they're claiming that doubling will increase the average temperature of the earth by about 2 degF. One would hope that any action being taken will actually make a difference, especially considering the costs of the actions being proposed. We are all engines of karma
  14. +1 Specious. I'm starting to use that word a lot when discussing liberal thought. We are all engines of karma
  15. IIRC, it's going to take roughly 100 years at current trends to double CO2 in the atmosphere from 0.0004 to 0.0008. We have a long way to go before getting atmospheric CO2 levels to 5%... Nothing currently being proposed by our government or "environmentalists" is going to change that. All that's going to change is the government will have more control over our lives and more of our money in their pocket. That is not a worth while trade off, IMO. As I've said many times in these forums, I am not advocating we keep pumping massive amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere. But it's not the US that we need to worry about. If we were really serious about this issue, we'd be going full speed ahead with nuclear power. We are all engines of karma
  16. I figured that out... But, you're not an engineer. Nor do you know how to calculate those costs. Are you trying to be taken seriously here? What country would that be? Are you talking about France? They are ~80% nuclear. If they can do it, why can't we? So, you checked this out? Links are good. Sounds like we could all learn something here. Why don't you share those links with us? Do you have Kool-Aid stains on your teeth? You should spend a little effort, and find out what the mass fraction of CO2 is in the atmosphere. That might drive your energy/activism in another direction. Answer the CO2 weight fraction question for me, if you want to continue to engage me in this thread. We are all engines of karma

  18. LOL... I lived in Edinburgh for 2 years, and met my English wife there. This was funny. Every meal had... potatoes. My wife cooks more potato recipes than I can count. I asked her, how many ways do you know how to cook a potato? Her answer... all of them We are all engines of karma
  19. Once people realize that government can only get its money by taxing corporate profits and employee payroll, it makes no sense for government to make it too difficult to start companies and hire people. I bought Keyne's General Theory of Unemployment. I agreed with everything he said in the first chapter. The rest of the book went over my head. He dives directly into a rigorous critique of classical economics as practiced in the 1920s. He is an incredibly precise writer, probably one of the most precise writers I've ever encountered. I have the impression that what our government calls Keynesian today is not something he would recognize. He advocated government spending from reserves built up by the government during good times. He did not advocate printing money. That's my understanding. Either way, our government is making a huge mess today, and it's going to be a long time before it gets sorted out, if ever. 20. That is becoming a common experience, from what I hear. At some point in time, everyone needs to realize they have to take care of themselves and their family first and foremost, IMO. Everything else comes after that. If we all did that, we wouldn't have the problems in our societies that we do today. I personally have become convinced that begins first in the family, second in the education system. We seem to be failing broadly on both fronts. Even worse, we're going the wrong direction these days. We are all engines of karma

  22. strawman noun 1. a person used as a cover for some questionable activity [syn: front man] 2. a weak or sham argument set up to be easily refuted [syn: straw man] 3. an effigy in the shape of a man to frighten birds away from seeds [syn: scarecrow] Let's assume you're using strawman per definition #2. If that's the case, you should be able to easily refute my simple question - why shouldn't minimum wage be $1MM/hour, other than calling it a "strawman". Can you? We are all engines of karma
  23. Yes, I did watch the video, and many others of his. His facts were actually presented in the many, many papers he published. And, those papers have been widely referenced by other accomplished economists. So, your statement is an opinion on your part, and an uninformed one at that. Milton Friedman And that's just a simple starting point for you... BTW, you didn't answer my question... Why shouldn't the minimum wage be $1MM/hour? We are all engines of karma
