I do recall on Thursday being in the trade show area and one guy pointed another guy to a beer cooler off in the corner that was reserved for the Hellfish. Heh. Well I know one of the injuries was a fractured heel because it happened to my friend. He was making his second jump of the day (and second BASE jump ever) and tried to stand up the landing in the LZ. He was using BASE-specific gear (Fox 245 in a GS Vision). Don't know what kind of shoes/boots he was wearing. I know my first landing pounded on my feet enough for me to decide to roll out everything the rest of the day. I only bumped into a few folks myself. Looks like the Friday thing sort of fizzled, but I think everyone was doing the same thing... running around all over the place. I know I was. BD 2003 was a total blast! Got 3 off the bridge. Got to see a lot of friends again. Got to meet some other folks who I've gotten to know online but never met in person. I don't who I'd blame more, the person looking for the mentor, or the low-number jumper deciding he is "ready" to be a mentor. The "mentor" should well be aware of the up-jumpers and direct the prospects in their direction. Taking on a student is an incredible responsibility. You literally are taking someone else's life into your hands. Absolutely. I've told my folks on numerous occasions that I am very aware of the risks that I take. But these risks are outweighed by the benefits that I receive from BASE jumping. I've told them in no uncertain terms that if I die BASE jumping there are to be NO LAWSUITS. Zero, zilch, zip, nada. I do not want the very people who have made it possible for me to experience the joy of BASE jumping to be attacked. If I die, I die doing what I loved. Doing what gives my life some meaning. Doing what allows me to see the world in a way few humans ever will. Better to die that way than rotting away in a nursing home not know who or where I am. I had the same initial reaction but I also thought perhaps he meant that he wasn't proposing regulation, so there was nothing to debate. I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt on that. My personal (Libertarian) take is that regulation, especially in matters like this, really doesn't solve anything. It might make for a good symbolic gesture, but from a practical perspective I don't think regulating jumping off the Perrine is going to change anything. And like others have mention, I don't even think it *can* be effectively regulated. BASE jumpers sort of have a "rules were made to be broken" mentality.
