  1. Good, how about establishing a protocol, because the way things are now there are NO legal limits on the magnification. Next we can talk about what constitutes probable cause using this technology. Beware of the collateralizing and monetization of your desires. D S #3.1415
  2. >>but the quality of the image/program is so poor that it's accomplished little for the loss of privacy. It's the image quality that I think is the biggest issue. in my view it should not be allowed to exceed that of the unaided human eye, that seems reasonable. Also, as an example of fair warning- when power companies shut down power for planned repairs or do any herbicide spraying, they mail out a warning to likely affected customers. It would not cost Google that much to issue the same mailing so that people could at least refuse or not be caught off guard on that particular group of days. You would think they would have been advised to do so for liability reasons in case someone felt the need to sue them for an invasion of privacy. Like I said it's all good till someone gets caught doing something they don't want the world to know about, or a pic involving their children gets posted on the internet- then the lawsuits will fly. Myself? what do I care, I am a social liberal -if people want to drive by and take pictures of me in my yard, I promise the joke will be on them. 4. >>people griping about invasion of privacy are going to have a REALLY tough row to hoe on this one. I know, and it will take a few lawsuits for people to determine where the actual surveillance line is given this new technology. But at least then the issue gets to be properly hashed out in the courts before the scrutiny level becomes a real privacy problem in the future. Maybe some standards can be set to prevent infractions. When you get down to it, right now it's all fun and games- until someone's nasty pic ends up on Billy Vance's NSFW thread.. 5. Sure,it seems a little silly NOW. I'm not talking about daily surveillance of every property all the time-Im talking about the precedent this sets for individual surveillance from a public locale using state of the art technology, whatever that may be in the future, without consent or permission. I'm not against the current practice if it is limited to the magnification of the naked human eye at normal 20/20 vision from the street once every few years- that's fine according to the current laws as I understand them. But what magnification is allowable, can it later include audio? Should the residents be warned ahead of time so they can at least be prepared or refuse having their property photographed and recorded on an internet database? Can a vehicle PARK on a street and record information for an extended period of time without a warrant? See Google street view for all intensive purposes is NEW technology It has not been argued, there was no public discourse, and residents were not informed- they just went ahead and did it as far as I know unless someone can show me otherwise. Google likes to push the envelope of information technology, they had the guts to undertake and fund this effort, it's genius, very useful, and I applaud them for it, thats great- but how FAR should they or anyone else be allowed to go, and THAT is my question. 7. Well, I like tire chains -when I was the mechanic for an Ice racer car on Lake Winnipesaukee in NH we use to wrap a motorcycle chain around the front tires and inflate to hold it in place- man those cars RIP on the ice. eh- prolly not street legal though. 8. >>Why wouldn't that work? It's enough for guns. troublemaker The reason I brought this whole thing up is because All I hear everywhere I go is the slogan-"Freedom isn't free" And I think you'll agree with this; Freedom isn't free because activists and average citizens have to be constantly aware of the activities around them and make sure that their rights, constitutional or otherwise, are not being slowly eroded. Google with it's colorful logo has a nice and fuzzy reputation of being a company whose slogan is "don't be evil" and I am not saying that they are nefarious in any way. However it is an information processing database when you get down to it and it is very easy for that database to be used as a form of surveillance by any number of organizations . As I said rights are usually eroded slowly and insidiously over time- in this example it may start as a simple photo record of the street view of your home and property from the public thoroughfare. But if you start to slowly ramp up the resolution over time next thing you know you won't have any privacy IN your home. One day it is a harmless looking VW bug going down your street taking pictures-the next its a full on surveillance van. Beware of the collateralizing and monetization of your desires. D S #3.1415
  9. >>they're decent, but not good horses and are prone to a lot of disease and expensive vet bills. I agree that they are not nor ever will be show horses, mine retained a lot of his will to be wild and I had to spend a lot of time training him, but after a while he could handle a bit and saddle- and I could take him on a reasonably safe trail ride and get back in one piece. He was fast and maybe a little dangerous so definitely not for children to handle. But I have not had the same experience health wize, mine was a super tough horse, his hooves were rugged and needed very little pampering and his health was excellent for his entire life- however i did keep him on lush pasture in a very low stress environment with practically no exposure to other sick animals, and he got lots of vaccinations. I would still recommend adoption if a person had some horse experience, the space ,and time. It was really cool to watch him gallop around like the king of the pasture-I'm sure you know what I mean. 12. Good question, Well I think the distinction is whether or not people are being filmed while on their own private property. On public or commercial property, though I may not like being filmed personally, it's an established practice over a reasonably long enough period of time, without contest- that it has become widely accepted and perfectly legal to do so. 13. >>very wise words... hehehe thanks, see- when you get older you get to shout advice all you want in the general direction of any young person within shouting range.and the more embarrassing the advice the better. 15. Obviously I am a privacy advocate, as such I feel compelled to question any possible infringements thereof. In My mind any RECORDING of personal information, genetic material, photo imagery of me or my property, personal data, or audio of me-without my knowing or consent, is a form of surveillance. That being said I enjoy using the google maps, as they are a very useful tool for a great number of applications.and I read their terms of use so I know what is allowed and what is not by using the data and it clearly says "not to be used for any illegal purpose"-so that should take care of that But from my understanding of the law which I admit is limited- once precedent is set like driving around taking volumes of pictures of private property- what's to stop companies from actually operating full on surveillance vans with live video and audio feeds to the internet of private citizens minding their own business on their private property. So that's why it should at least be questioned. Beware of the collateralizing and monetization of your desires. D S #3.1415
  16. Well, since Google satellite maps are legal, constitutional and not considered surveillance, or an invasion of privacy in the U.S.- then the average person can use its detailed and accurate photo data as a tool for any number of property related issues ie. Real estate, road and trail access, appraisal, property boundaries, and to determine what a property is being commercially used for. Far as I know all of this information can be printed out and presented in court in the if needed- can't get into details about my own case though. 17. Don't get me started about property tax, I'm suing the town over taxes pending, and I am using Google maps as evidence- ironically. Beware of the collateralizing and monetization of your desires. D S #3.1415
  18. Thank you, So from my understanding of the laws pertaining to this issue in the case that was cited, the recording of visual information of private property from a public locale without consent of the owner is legal in the U.S. Also If the U.S. federal government uses this information for any purpose only then does it become a constitutionality issue. So now we are left with an interpretation of how this information may be used. Beware of the collateralizing and monetization of your desires. D S #3.1415
  19. >>Google has a URL removal tool. Don't want your house on their Google view, Copy paste the url of your house and submit it for removal and they'll remove it. Thats helpful and a wise feature, as i could see criminals taking the time to slowly case out a prospective home from the comfort of their own desk- checking out the exits, blind spots, view from neighboring houses, lighting etc.. they can even map out a GPS escape route. See this is why I think this activity warrants a debate. Beware of the collateralizing and monetization of your desires. D S #3.1415

  21. The Google street view feature is the result of using vans equipped with cameras which roam the streets of populated areas taking detailed video still footage, though it has many interesting uses-What do you think about this activity, should it be allowed? does it infringe on any constitutional rights? 23. >>Following your link, my house doesn't exist. Yeah apparently the Google surveillance van has not been down my road either, I cant imagine how many vans they have roaming around taking video of everything, are they marked vans? If I see the thing on my road I'm gonna try to moon it- and I think everyone should cuz THAT would be funny. Beware of the collateralizing and monetization of your desires. D S #3.1415
  24. Well i was just browsing some foreclosure real estate listings today and I Googled the fuckers- clicked on street levelto my surprise I could check out in detail the whole neighborhood from my desk like I was walking down the street myself. I use the sat maps a lot but this was fucking amazing!- front yards, some back yards, I could see people standing around, privacy my ass. I said to the realtor "Well I don't see any dog fighting rings or huge dope plants anywhere, you know location location...." Beware of the collateralizing and monetization of your desires.
