    Plus he'd said some hurtful things about said cops, and didn't have the good sense to just whisper them. Blues, Dave C'mon, Dave, you're minimizing. It wasn't good enough for him to kill an "enemy" who was arguably (albeit perversely) a "combatant". No, he had to hurt that enemy worse than causing his death by murdering his little girl, so the enemy would have to live with that. That's just pure evil.

    You make a reasonable point that using an extreme to remedy an injustice can sometimes result in an opposite injustice, but an injustice nonetheless. FWIW, those type of provisions in more recent domestic violence laws (many states have their own similar versions) were drafted specifically to remedy the long, long chronic problem of a man beating up a woman, but when the police arrived they did essentially nothing, because it was just "a domestic matter". It amounted to a de facto license - not just to batter women, but to keep on battering them - and such laws were intended to remedy that.

    With no regard to what, Mark? Due process? Believe me, I'm all about due process. But at some point the line gets crossed to where the rules of engagement become "lethality first". This was such an instance.

    And you really think that just by saying "Waco", like it's some kind of Battle Cry Of The Free Man, that that really makes it an apt comparison? It doesn't. He didn't just murder "combatants", he deliberately targeted and murdered 2 total civilians. My only regret is that he probably was able to euthanize himself with a shot to the head before the flames of Hell consumed him.

    That's historically been one of the sillier "standard arguments" against just about any new law. ETA - Anyhow, my post #8 addresses this.

    That only means they won't work all of the time. That's not a winning argument against the efficacy of background checks (even if it's shouted in all-caps). Here's one news source (after a very quick search) that says that according to FBI statistics, about 1 million people since 1998 have been turned down for gun purchases because they failed a background check. http://permianbasin360.com/fulltext?nxd_id=243962 There is no SINGLE ONE measure to solve the problem, just like there is no one single rule by which to raise children - you put together a web of measures to address various issues, to close various loopholes; some trial and error; keep some that work, chuck some that don't work, and try to put together a responsible overall process. I realize this argument is totally lost on those who just cross their arms across their chests and resist, resist, resist; but whatever.

    I think the seismic "signature" of a nuclear detonation is different than a chemical explosion. Also, they would have to haul dynamite in the thousands of tons. gasp! so THAT'S what a "kiloton" is. Doh!
