Kanzlerin Merkel: Multiculturalism A Failure in Germany
masterblaster72 replied to a topic in Speakers Corner
Neither. I think her point was that immigrants should make more of an effort to learn the language of their host country so they can better help themselves. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up. -
"Is it true that not all right wingers are racists, but all racists are right wingers." Not true at all -- plenty of racists on the left. White gentrifiers from the midwest settling in Brooklyn in recent years come to mind, for starters. SecDef Gates Says "Too Few Bear Burdens of War"
masterblaster72 replied to a topic in Speakers Corner
If by "bleeding hearts" you mean "patriotic" pro-war republicans like Dick Cheney Paul Wolfowitz Richard Perle Dan Quayle Karl Rove Newt Gingrich Rush Limbaugh Sean Hannity Rudy Giuliani John Ashcroft Rick Santorum ...then I certainly agree! That was some great news to wake up to this morning.

I agree, because that's where I'm at these days. I will likely sell my rig in the next few months so I can buy an expensive telescope and take pictures of nebulae and galaxies from the mountains. I'll still be playing around with the sky, just in a different way. Also, that incident a couple years back where one of the mad skillz types took out an AFF student on his first jump with a Katana left me unsettled. My attitude toward this sport hasn't quite been the same since. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.

Nice post. But may I add #11: Please WATCH THE CAPS LOCK! And while I'm at it, #12: Use spell check when possible and available. Oh wtf #13 for good measure: Don't be intellectually dishonest.

I'm not of Irish descent so I'm not a "plastic Paddy American" who thinks he's Irish. I don't profess to know much about Ireland other than the people I know from there, who are some of the nicest people I've come to know...as a matter of fact I've never met an Irish person that didn't make a good impression on me. So once again in light of your arrogant comments about Ireland: I shit on the Union Jack. And the flag of England. And I didn't watch your YouTube video...coming from you there's not much motivation to do so. There was a substantial amount of celebrating from large crowds of Muslims following that day. There were the expected declarations of sympathy, denouncing terrorism from many of their leadership, but still a lot of applause was present. It seems that you don't want to acknowledge that. Islamofacism could not be as prevalent as it is unless a lot of Muslims at the very least choose to let it exist. I hate Islamofacists. I think the term is quite appropriate, and Pres Bush was absolutely right to call it that. I would have a much greater opinion of Obama if he would do the same. I'd disagree, there was some celebrating by some Palastinians which was show almost 24/7 for days afterwards, there was a massive amount of sympaty from the majority of the Islamic world. I was in London at the time and many white British non Muslims were saying 'good, about time the Yanks got a taste of what terrorism is like' unpleasent but true. There was even a Newsnight programe in which many members of the audiance said the same which was denounced in the House of Commons and susequently buried. Many Brits had a problem with the US funding the IRA which caused us 41 years of grief. Yet I don't see or hear that being brought up all the time. We could always say "look the VERY BLOODY English are getting what they deserved for 1000 years of ethnic cleansing of Ireland" Yada yada yada... If it wasn't for the Brits there wouldn't be feck all architecture, no Dublin castle, Trinity, Queens, RCSI, or anyother bulding of note. Who built the first proper road in Ireland? The Brits. Who brought trade to Ireland, the Brits. Who gave Ireland its first language? The English. Who was it that threw shit and piss over the 1916 members of the uprising when they came out of the GPO? The IRISH. The Brits were no harsher with the Irish that they were with their own people. All I hear is whinging about how all the problems in Ireland are down to the Brits, yet Ireland has been fucked up and misrun by the Irish for nearly 100 years now, so get over it love. What an arrogant wad of shit, this post above. Long live Eire, and I will wipe my ass with the Union Jack, in light of your comments. I find it incredible that this issue can possibly mean anything to anybody, enough to motivate one to start a poll on it. I suggest a "who gives a fuck" option. You might see higher numbers in your polls. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up. -
No, not nearly enough similarities. In hockey you have ice on a small rink that helps you move. That's not to say that it doesn't take energy to get you moving...but once you're moving, you can stop running and the ice still moves you. In soccer it's hard running on a far larger field of play. These guys can run miles in 90 minutes...and they're miles of short-burst running. I can tell you from years of first-hand experience that it wears on you after a while, especially after 120 minutes. That's like saying because I'm a fan of the game of soccer, hockey should be played in two halves of 45 minutes each with no time-outs. In this final and in the one four years ago, the players had nothing left in their legs at the end of 120. And these are the best athletes in the game. There's a reason why FIFA doesn't follow hockey time limits. FIFA glamorizes Pele, not Maradona. Just look at the opinions most people have of Maradona (even on these forums alone), especially in English speaking countries. I'd say he's pretty far from glamorized. That's FIFA and the English press. Here we agree, but unfortunately Sepp Blatter, the president of FIFA, will never consider introducing the camera to the game. His likely successor, Michel Platini, has stated in the past that he's not fond of the idea. In a way, I'm not too fond of the idea because it disrupts the continuity of the game, and you'll end up with a sport that looks like an American one choc full of timeouts for commercial breaks -- no thanks. In any case, the replay rule will probably not change any time soon. It's a trip...I never hear so much complaining about the rules of this game as I do from Americans, Canadians and Australians. Sure it can be improved in some areas, though most of the rest of the world embraces the game for what it is -- a joy to play and watch if you know and understand it. What would be your alternative then? I disagree, even as a fan of a national team with an awful history in PK shootouts (with the exceptions of 2000 & 2006). Penalties show what a team is made of psychologically, and in most cases, from what I've seen, the team that merits the victory goes through...even if it's often not the team that I'm rooting for. That said, PK shootouts can be quite unnerving to watch from a couch. Imagine what it's like for the players... Back in the day the alternative to the extra 30 mins + PKs was to play another game on a different date, as was the case for the Euro finals in 1968. Logistically that's a pain in the ass to organize within a short period of time, so naturally the game has to end somehow. I agree. Not only has he written great music from the beginning of his career, he's still putting out good stuff. Well, smashing someone's face in doesn't always have consequences (example). Nor did anyone get physically hurt here. Most importantly of all, Uruguay paid the consequences and did not get away with this violation of the rules. The rules of the game were enforced accordingly. In every world cup I've heard this, not only on this board but on other boards I post to. These are pretty much always the words of a person who is responding to a result that doesn't suit him/her. That is not always the case. It is left to the discretion of the referee. I've seen unintentional handballs in the box even in this world cup where the penalty wasn't awarded. Yup, he did it deliberately no question about it. The other Uruguayan player next to Suarez was also doing the same. It was a last-gasp attempt to keep themselves in the game. I don't support cheating. Unfortunately EVERY team does it in some form or other. It really detracts from the game, I agree. You can make whatever judgments you want about my personality; I don't really care since we don't know each other. Of course not. But one thing I notice -- complaints about cheating come most often from those who don't like it being done to the team they're rooting for. However, when the team that person is rooting for does it, those same people remain silent. I can tell you had a lot of emotion invested in this game to tell me something that absurd. I was happy to see either team go through. I would have said the same had Ghana pulled this trick on Uruguay. It would have been nice to see an African team finally make the semis, but unfortunately Ghana didn't put the PK away in the 120th minute. No there would not, because the cost is too great -- no team wants to lose a man when it's not absolutely necessary. But in the 120th minute of extra time, most players with some wit would do what Suarez did when faced with certain loss if the ball goes in the goal. In that sense I suppose most players are douches in your book. I disagree with that -- Robben for example is a fine player but he's diving to no end in this tournament, even more than he did in the 2006 WC. Like someone above said -- these teams are there to win and a lot of players compromise their integrity to do so. Sure, it was cheap. I agree with that. It went against the rules. But the rules dictate that the other team gets a penalty shot and the player that commits the foul leaves the field. Uruguay paid the price. All Ghana had to do was put it away...but instead Uruguay's gamble to keep their hopes alive paid off. That's why I think it was a brilliant move...though I wouldn't want to see a game won in this fashion again, and I probably won't. Agreed -- Uruguay has had an easy path to the semis and has not faced a team with the momentum, confidence and talent that Holland has. I assume so. If not I'll find some bar or restaurant where they're showing the game. I'd like to visit the town anyway as my parents lived there for a short while in the '60s. Yup. Should make for one hell of a semifinal. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
