  1. More like a literal rather than perverted interpretation of the Quran. That's the gist of this very long and insightful article, without any direct quotes from the "holy" book -- ISIS adherents practice a very strict and literal interpretation of the life of the prophet. A few examples: Surah 4 verse 56 Surah 8 verse 60 Surah 47 verse 4 I know there aren't many Muslim posters on these boards, but to the extent there are, I am very open to hearing the spiritual, non-literal interpretations of these verses. Honestly. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  2. lol, yeah that little incident is exactly what gave rise to ISIL. Sounds like something some right wing idiot radio show host would say. Maybe you guys should pay for 10 or so congressional investigations into that lmao. "Clinton...Obama...Benghazi..." It also sounds like something that a "low information" listener of such a right-wing talk show would parrot. Funny to think the region was better off with Saddam in power before the dimwitted Texan went all cowboy on the place. Hindsight sure is 20/20... 3. Very interesting read so far. A long article and I only read about 1/5 of it...will try finishing tomorrow. It's getting real now that they're on the doorstep of Europe... Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  4. First this Then this ...and now this I have a colleague at work who said after the Charlie Hebdo incident that the "only solution is to hug a Muslim." I like his kind-hearted intentions but I think he's in the minority. As long as these incidents continue, Europe will become less tolerant of its guests from the east. Not a sustainable a sustainable situation in the long term and doesn't bode well for the future. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  5. ^Your beliefs in a nutshell. "Somewhere in the mideast..." Megiddo perhaps? This kind of wishful thinking -- for your kingdom on earth after destruction, mayhem, suffering and death for all except your kind -- deserves the same contempt as ISIS' beliefs. Your "God" is hate. 6. Less obsession with the damn television. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  7. Which is why he's a simpleton as an historian. There's a lot more than just numbers to history -- tons of context and nuances to take into account that requires years of study. He conveniently neglects to show the timelines and numbers reflecting the battles Christians waged on each other during the constant war that was medieval Europe. If he did, the conclusion would be obvious: armies in those times were simply motivated by loot and power. It's a human thing -- not a Christian/Islamic thing. If you want an interesting highly qualified historical perspective on Islam and its origins, I strongly recommend this documentary -- it's fascinating and a real eye-opener. 8. I've been to Iceland three times -- very much worth the visit if you ever get the chance. Fascinating place unlike any other. In total I've been to 14 countries, though many times as a repeat visitor. I'm hoping to see more soon -- next on the list is either Copenhagen or St. Petersburg. Canada (6x) Iceland (3x) Netherlands (3x) Italy (15x) Spain (2x) Portugal (3x) France* Germany* Liechtenstein (2x) Ireland (3x) Ukraine Israel Taiwan Vietnam * - being on the border by both countries, I run through them frequently so I've lost count. Garmin map attached :-) Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  9. I've watched a Bill Warner lecture before. As an engineer he may be pretty smart, but as one who recounts the historical record he is an idiot with a very blinkered view. Christians were just as savage back in the day as the invaders from the east, and he doesn't take into account the fact that medieval Europe was in a constant state of war within, too preoccupied with itself to bother anyone on the outside. 10. Have a link for this? No. Been the buzz that he participated. Could be a hoax. But the guy is an actual badass with some pretty decent military background and some knowledge. He is a trained and experienced military pilot. Quite simply, I wouldn't put it past him to lead that stuff himself. Got a link to the buzz, or was it oral hearsay? I just did a search for napalm on Google news and found nothing. It might be BS... 12. Right, that's more akin to Christian churches that sound church bells on Sunday that can be heard for miles around. You weaken your message when you cross the line into being ethnically judgmental. This is a comparison between Halacha and Sharia: Jews don't wake up the neighborhood when going to synagogue. Your cheap attempt to make a bigot out of me assumes I don't have equal disdain for tower calls and church bells, which I do. 13. I wouldn't call it "evil" vs. "noble" -- more like austere vs. flexible. With some exceptions, observers of Halacha generally... ...don't proselytize or impose their beliefs on others outside their faith ...don't threaten others with violence as justified by their belief system ...don't impose extreme punishment or kill members of their own faith for falling short in their degree of observance ...don't get offended and consequently enraged to the point of violence as readily as those who enforce Sharia ...continually question their beliefs as part of their faith ...don't have calls to prayer for the whole neighborhood to hear ...adapt to the cultures and times they live in. Interesting question, but I think if one is even superficially familiar with both the answer is fairly obvious. 14. How does the fracking fluid get down there, and the product get back up, without piping going through the water table? Oh shush, you're playing into OPEC's greasy mits with that question. 15. Lol, good luck with that. I've bee trying for years; it's a lost cause. You're better off coming here just for the entertainment value. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  16. Are you referring to environmental regulations or are you referring to the industrial activities that seem out of place in small towns? Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  17. Win one for the people of NY: Cuomo to Ban Fracking in New York State Hopefully this is the start of a domino effect that will see the victory of common sense, clean air and clean water over lies, short-sightedness and social injustices befitting a banana republic. 18. Very interesting story, and the insider's perspective is a new one that I haven't read before. Turns out that those against the Iraq invasion in the early 2000s who warned of anti-US radicalization of the locals weren't so far off the mark after all. And now we're reaping what we've sown... 20. Sure I do. And if the service for assisted suicide were available to Robin Williams who suffered from anxiety and depression for most of his life, he may have offed himself in the early '90s and not experienced the joy of seeing great successes that followed in a number of films. He went through his low points and came back more than once. In the end, he made his choice. However, many who suffer from depression eventually find ways to cope and live a rewarding life. I agree with the above -- especially about treating depression as a medical condition. And hardly any chronic medical problems are treated by offering the patient the option to end it all. Assisted suicide should not be an easily, readily available option for those not suffering from terminal illness -- it should be a last resort arrived at after all else fails. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  21. Because in most cases, life gets better. Also, many who have lived through suicide attempts are glad they are still alive. For those suffering from depression that doesn't abate, perhaps visiting an assisted suicide center and being refused (x) number of times and then upon the (y)th visit being offered the option could be a more balanced approach for those not suffering from terminal illness. Agreed. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  22. The hopelessly depressed ones (probably a good chunk of the 40,000) usually don't need assistance. Of course if the option for a peaceful assisted suicide were there, many of them would readily use it. For that reason, probably not a good idea for this kind of service to be available to the chronically depressed.
