Just another thought...this happens ALL THE TIME. I have a friend who peppered his buddy in the face last month hunting quail. He feels terrible about it obviously, but the other dude was a complete idiot and went into the bushes w/o telling my buddy...of course the bird my friend went for flew right across that bush...bam. Cheney did make a mistake of swinging quickly w/ the line and just firing, but unfortunately that's a mistake that's made by hundreds of hunters. As long as everyone in the group ensures everyone else knows their position, the risk goes down a ton. This lawyer guy didn't tell Cheney where he was, so when Cheney fired, he didn't expect the guy to be there. This scenario has happened a million times...everyone should just drop this ridiculous crap.

Absolutely possible. For example, you just shot a good friend in the face, you feel like the worst human being on earth, you're worried to hell about your buddy, it takes a few hours to get to the hospital from the "field," etc. By the time everything's said and done, you're still feeling like shit, the cops might try to make contact several hours later, and by that time maybe you just need the damn night and you'll give your official account in the morning. Very possible for even the average joe.

Without having at least a private pilot or close to it, you'll honestly have very little to no chance of safely landing something like an Otter, CASA, etc. Maybe you'd have a chance in a 182, but the odds are still stacked against you. Probably the best thing you could do is learn about airspeed, altitude and the instruments that go along w/ those. Don't worry about engine temp, oil temp, blah blah...none of that's going to matter at all to someone who barely knows what they're doing. If you somewhat understand the trade b/w altitude/airspeed, you'll have a better chance. Also, probably the best thing you could do is just try to fly level, keep the aircraft at the same altitude and call someone on the radio and hope to God they can talk you through how to land something like an Otter (i.e. stall speeds, approach speeds, where the flaps are, etc). If you understand how to work the radio, talking to someone who knows something is better than not talking to anyone at all. Third...like someone else said, just get the hell out of the plane and don't even think about trying to save it (at your stage anyways...it'd be different if you were confident in your ability and understood everything).

Actually our State Dept has constantly warned against travel to areas of the world (i.e. Iraq, Afghanistan, SEA, etc). The warning's there, people just don't listen b/c they think they can save the world by themselves.

I think lawrocket's football analogy was pretty good. Sometimes you may make it to the 1 yd line, get shut down, and are forced to take 3 pts instead of 7. To fucking bad, that's how the games played...no one cares how close you were, or even if you had more rushing yards. When the cards fall as they do in a point based game (or election in this case), and you have less points, you lose! So no, the 1st election was not BS, the cards fell in place for Bush as he took home the bigger states, allowing for more points, much like scoring a TD from the 1yd line while Gore was stopped at the 1yd and forced to go for the field goal. They both got to the 1 yd line, but one took home more points.

Or you could simply look at the data and see that Bush was elected by the people (in the 2nd case, he beat Kerry by a few million votes on the popular side of things). Nonetheless, as lawrocket pointed out, we have a Republic and that's just how it is. I said pretty fucking good, not perfect. Finding OBL is one of two things...either we know where he is and don't really give a shit for right now (b/c let's face it, the guy is no more than a figurehead...killing/capturing him solves very little), or the simple fact that finding a man like OBL is like finding a needle in a million pounds of hay. Intel can be outstanding, but it still takes luck to find something/someone that small.

Like matt said, it's just dumb to focus on one thing for an argument that's been used for 5 years. Plus, we're talking more about micro intel, not macro intel. The kind of intel that tells us where to bombs on target is fucking good. The kind of intel that says where the bad guys are and where they aren't is pretty fucking good. I'm not necessarily arguing for macro intel (i.e. WMD stuff). Nonetheless, it's still really annoying to hear the same one-liner over and over again...all some people got is a crutch called WMD and it's becoming, sorry...has become, a ridiculous argument.

However, it'd sure be nice if the media would report what we ACTUALLY do instead of 1/2 stories and journalized bullshit. War sucks, people die...good and bad. But as far as collateral damage goes, we do FAR FAR less of it than the media tells everyone. But don't worry, you don't have to believe me, no one will unless they actually live it. I'm still young, but my view and feelings have changed much...I don't want to see anyone die, but at the same time, I have no fucking problem turning a bunch of terrorists into mist.
