Best Screenname and where did it come from???
nightjumps replied to NoShitThereIWas's topic in The Bonfire
Well, I had two, "Nightjumps" and "Bigun" until HH called foul on owning more than one. "Nightjumps" are what I love and "Bigun" is who I am. As a paratrooper, while most disliked N/CE jumps, I loved them. Course, I had a bit of an advantage usually being the Jumpmaster for my team. To me there was nothing as beautiful as standing in the door of a C-130 on a warm summer night with a full or partial moon, a symphony of stars, the sound of those engines and the smell of the exhaust. Even in skydiving, I wear out the DZs when a full moon comes around. The ride up, the door opening, being in freefall and seeing all the lights on the ground, the stars, the moon and the absolute feeling of freedom. Bigun - well that worked out in many ways. It began with my size and Oklahoma colloquialisms. In SF, it worked out as being a five letter, no same letter code name. It also worked because my favorite weapons were the M60, Mag58 and four-duece mortar. -
The important part of this question is how it was asked. It depends on “intent.” An aerobatic pilot’s rig is a single FAA approved canopy and tso’d harness. However, they do not have the “intent” of exiting the aircraft. As the question is asked here and FAR’s section 1.1 and 105.3 would indicate; “A parachutist making an intentional jump is to wear a single harness dual pack parachute having at least one main parachute and one approved auxiliary/reserve parachute. The main pack need not be an approved type, but the auxiliary/reserve pack and the harness are required to be an FAA-approved type. The FAA issues a TSO which specifies the minimum performance standard for materials, parts, processes, or appliances used on civil aircraft.” If someone asks, “What is the FAA minimum requirement to exit an aircraft?” or “What is the FAA minimum requirement to make an intentional skydive?” would determine the correct response. Sound right?

Perhaps the genius who came up with this plan should do a couple of Mr. Bills.

physics spinoff - why do big ways fall slower?

I should probably leave this one alone. -
physics spinoff - why do big ways fall slower?

Whatever NASA comes up with in numbers, it still wouldn't work. Let's say it's 10,000 for the sake of argument. You launch a perfect 10,000 way chunk. You'd still have the same effect as launching a pice of flat paper. Eventually its going to start oscillating from side to side. THe greater the distance to the ground the more side-to-side its going to get as it spills air. Sooner or later, someone's not going to be able to hold on or even if it remained a perfect formation, it may crash on a an angle equivalent to the side of the piece of paper... I'll pass on this one. -

So, if we got a large enough big way, we might be able to land it without ever having to pitch out!!! -

Ya know he may not be totally to blame for failure, but as the leader, he is responsible for corrective action.

Here is my sugggestion for those with your paritcular problem. Forget aobut the hanging harness, because as mentioned earlier, it really doesn't help with your arch and in fact, actually creates a bit of a de-arch. 1. Find a door in your house or apartment. 2. Place your feet about eighteen inches from the door. 3. Place your pelvic region against the door, keeping your feet about shoulder width apart and 18" from the door. 4. The only thing touching the door (relative wind) is your pelvic. 5. Hands up as though you were holding the strut. but back away from the door. 6. Now make all movements (PRCPs) using only your hands in the symettrical movements that your instructors taught you. As your right hand goes down to the student handle, your left hand should move simultaneously to the top of your head (as shown in class). 7. Do this about 25-30 times SLOWLy ensuring your body does not twist... keep your shoulders sqare with the door, your eyes focused on a spot about 3 inches above your head. 8, Feel the pinch in the small of your back.... feel it until it aches. 9, Once you've done that to proficiency, you can then increase the tempo on your PRCPs. On jump day... Find a door at the DZ and do it ten times with your gear on before going up. Then do that exact same thing while hanging from the strut.

Ya know as big as we are, I am usually a laggard on new, smaller stuff. I've done the homework, I've looked at them, I helped a guy at SD chnge out his link to slinks, I went out after him and watched the deployment... But psychologically... it just don't seem right for us biguns, man. Guess I just need to suck it up and try a set.

If: Main canopy in D-bag and Pilot chute not cocked Then: Pilot chute not cocked during packing. If: Main canopy out of D-bag and P/C not cocked, Then: pilot chute should be "uncocked" state and did its job.

I'm confused. Was the main, a) out of the main packing tray, but still in the D-bag or, b) the opening sequence had started and main canopy was coming out of hte D-bag?

what to expect at a coach's rating course
nightjumps replied to panzwami's topic in Safety and Training
In addition to what Tom, Ryan & Mar had to say, I'd like to add that we put on a very intense gear check "Gig" row. First we have riggers teach you about all the possible screw-ups. Then you go through the gauntlet. Five folks in a room with gig rigs (or maybe not on one or two, but multiple on others) - you have five minutes. If you miss three minors or one major gig - you're out, done, gone, pack up, leave. P.S. If anyone chooses to do this - we red flag the rigs, write all the gigs down for that particular rig, the Instructor wearing it maintains the gig list for that particular rig and when gig row is over, has to resolve the gigs. Then, all "gigged" rigs go through a rigger's inspection. P.P.S. One year - after the zip-tie on the reserve handle incident, we incorporated that into the gig row without telling the Coach candidates. All of them found it; there were a couple of "Holy Shits" and a couple of folks who pointed it out, but didn't understand. We asked them.."OK, what would you do if you came across something that you didn't understand." They replied, "I'd get an Instructor or rigger to look at it." Pass - move on. After gig row, we explained. They were like; "Really?!?!? that actually happened?" yup. The result of this is - you would be surprised at how many new Coaches start doing "Secret Agent" gear checks on everyone on the plane. -
John, Would it be alright to download your modeling program also? You have three very valuable tools for use. Keith
