A lot of hunters are buying quality range finders. I recently put a target turret on the elevation adjustment on one of my Leupolds. So, all you have to do is range an animal then turn the turret for that range and you should be right on. That's correct! You don't need a fancy rifle scope, or an expensive laser range finder to do these functions. Have you ever tried a good MilDot scope and used a mildot master? its a slide rule type thing and faster than any calculator out there....been in use for many yearshttp://www.ustacticalsupply.com/mildot-slope.shtml cheap too! another solution is a shepherd scope I am sure you all have heard of them....one shot zeroing and then place the circle that fits on the target and fire!

I know about firelapping, but I didn't realize that it polishes out more of the bore at the throat then at the crown. I would think this effect would be minimal. yes I agree it didn't make alot of sense in handlapping but then the bullet wasn't being fired. The reason the bore gets ever so slightly tapered is that more of the polishing compound is used up when the bullet starts to travel and less before it exits thats been confirmed and written about by the likes of David Tubbs and others. by the way I think it was black star barrels that was producing the tapered bores that you can purchase. I have some suggestions for those who cannot serve but want to do something that actually helps out: Attention all skygods want to really help out? Get ahold of the military and volunteer to teach HALO out in AZ, or if you are closer to Ft. Benning maybe volunteer as a master rigger or jumpmaster therefore possibly freeing up an experienced soldier to go out and be able to do his job in the field. Attention all world class shooters you also can do the same and volunteer your time to the military as a shooting instructor in any form such as: Long Range shooting, Pistol, Shotgun, or Combat 3 gun shooting. Are you a martial arts person? Volunteer! Are you a scientist? Invent something! Explosives expert? World class rock climber? Engineer? Mechanical skills?....there are lots of broken things that need to be repaired Gunsmith? I mean I do not care if you are a damned chef...volunteer your time at a chow hall they deserve to eat as well as anyone. Doctor, Nurse, Physical Therapist? the VA needs help treating the severly wounded and or disabled. Are you Wealthy?...donate to the new Hospital they are building to treat amputees and the severly Disabled! Dog Trainer? Pilot? people need rides home etc. Car dealer? donate a car to a disabled vet that need a disabled adapted vehicle Carpenter?...how about modifying a crippled soldiers home!!! School Teacher? try tutoring those who need to be helped after a head injury. I am really tired of those who say I wish I could but then don't even look into it. For those of you who do go through the inconvenience of picking up the phone to make an effort please follow through and be persistant! Anyone who can make any difference at all please help now. I was not referring to the war in Iraq in particular....those assholes should fend for themselves and I really hope they get it right or they can just go on killing each other at will. I also KNOW many world class jumpers (and world class citiezens who are not world class jumpers, yet) who have and do serve. Many of the jumpers you look up to here, are former SEALs, SF, Rangers, Paratroopers, Pathfinders, Force Recon, PJ's, SPs and the list goes on. They serve/ed in WW II, Korea, Viet Nam, Grenada, Panama, Saudi Arabia, Samolia, Kosavo, and of course on our 4 fronts right now. I too realize this as some of them are my friends that I talk to and hang out with on a regular basis the ones I wanted to address is those who would bitch and moan but will not ever left a finger to actually do something about it. People have short memories in the US. During WW2 the media was all over us with statements like we cannot win against such a determined foe that has religion as its core and worships their leader as a god on earth. I guess we didn't have the resolve to win in a battle where we lost more that twice the men that our enemy did (IWO JIMA!) We had a limp wristed president at the time as well, who left thousands of americans to die in captivity. Those men held out well beyond what was expected of them only to have commanders in the field surrender in order to save themselves. Their men were totally destroyed by our surrender and then only to have the humiliation and torture of being in japanese captivity(philipines) Even after those men were rescued by our own troops(cabanatuan) there were still local communists who would not allow them safe passage through their village, which was the only route passable. Our solution?...we're going through whether you like it or not and if the answer should be NO, we will bomb you out of existance. Those same communists in the PI are now what some will call JI (Jamaat Islamiya) and (Abu Sayaaf). The war on non muslims has never stopped in actuality but has only had periods of relative calm. What had happened in the past 30years is we never actually did anything at all about the Muslim Insurgents we simply turned the other cheek when they killed bombed and then took our money and medicine only to come back and bite us in the ass. Ah therin lies the problem: ballistic tip bullets are made for different reeason in different sizes...on a larger bullt say anywhere from .270win on up its got a little more jacket thickness....5.56mm is made purely for rapid nearly explosive fragmentation the 25cal is mostly considered by the ammo manufacturers to be a varmint round...yes it will kill deer but so will .22LR. I am not being condescending about this its just what they have chosen to designate as a "varmint round". On the other hand yes a .308 will kill coyotes(duh) but they consider it a medium game round, and so the jacket thickness is greater. It still expands rapidly but does not fragment quite so much(I have actually found most of the bullet post mortem) I never really use a laser range finder for ranging targets beforehand...but thats just me. I spent many many years surveying and shooting distances so I usually know the distance at a glance. In surveying you need to be able to gauge whether the instrument is giving you some type of erroneous reading and therfore you pay attention always and that trains you. the reason I started using ballistic tip is accuracy flat shooting and I was tired of ruined meat by over penetration resulting in 2 ruined front shoudlers.
