Celebration, Politics, Selective Looting and Riots: A Micro Level Study of the Bulls Riot of 1992 in Chicago Michael J. Rosenfeld In the aftermath of the Bulls riot of 1992, which started as a celebration of a basketball victory but turned into a night of looting and rioting in Chicago's black ghettos, local and national newspapers asked: was it just a celebration? Was it an expression of pent-up anger and frustration? Had Korean and Arab merchants been targeted? the sociological literature on riots contains a great deal of analysis of city level data, but few micro level studies that analyze who are the victims and perpetrators of the violence and destruction associated with riots. I argue in this paper that the Bulls riot of 1992 was political as well as celebratory, responding in part to massive welfare cuts in Illinois and to the televised drama of the Los Angeles riot of 1992. A store by store analysis of ghetto merchants reveals that despite the political undertones, the extensive nature of the riot, and a history of organized boycotts against Korean stores, there was no targeting of merchants based on race or ethnicity. Some implications for the political and racial nature of riots are discussed.

All of the SCOTUS Justices are no doubt competent. But I will add that Justices Scalia, Roberts, Thomas, Kennedy, and Alito seem to be more versed in the vernacular of the day (1790s) and more well read on the founding fathers of our country, and understanding of their intent. Justice Scalia is one damn fine Jurist, scholar and giant of a man. He was very impressive, and along with Roberts and Thomas, he truly showed that both sides of this matter are woefully inadequate to argue their cases. Justice Scalia would certainly have hit this one out of the park.

Protesters Plan to Put Military Recruiters In Cages!
warpedskydiver replied to warpedskydiver's topic in Speakers Corner
Now you are making even more crap up. What is it that you do not realize, the fact that an angry mob has the potential to overcome a few recruiters? The fact that some of the protesters who are less than peaceful or law abiding may possess a weapon, or decide to burn the recruiters out? You live in a fantasy world where anyone that believes as you do as far as this war is concerned, will never do something like blow a building up, shoot into an amory or recruiting station, nor assault servicemembers. Wake up, the world is not always as you see it. -
Protesters Plan to Put Military Recruiters In Cages!

Nobody insinuated that the recruiters would do anything improper. I personally did mention what teh outcome might be if they were assaulted, threatened, or an attempt was made to destroy a government facility. Servicemembers do not enjoy the option of deciding which laws they will floow if any, nor do they have any luxury which would allow them to abandon their post. -
When you automatically turn political races into single-issue events, with the second amendment being the single issue. When you think the second amendment is the most important one When seeing certain bylines on posts makes your little heart go pitter-pat If you think that wish that gun buyers would just be truthful about their mental and criminal status is realistic then you might be a gun nut (apologies to the much wittier Jeff Foxworthy) Wendy W. Some of us view positions on the second as being extremely important. Just because we like, or enjoy owning, using, or collecting firearms, does not mean we don't consider all others as important. Because the second amendment is so polarizing, and unpopular to some folks, it provides us with some insight as to how all our other rights are actually going to be viewed. Some are not for privacy, nor the right against illegal search and seizure. Some are not for free speach, or the right to assemble. Some are not for any right that they themselves are uncomfortable with trusting others with. Some are for all rights for themselves, but none for others.

Racism & Obama's Speech on March 18th, 2008
warpedskydiver replied to PLFXpert's topic in Speakers Corner
That just shows you how bad of a choice the democratic candidate is when liberatarians and independants as well as moderate republicans/conservatives will vote for the republican that is being offered to us. -

Some of us are not actually republicans by definition, or by testing. Liberatarian might be more accurate. -
No offer given.

I think you may not have listened to his entire sermon, he states exactly what the problem is. Unless you just don't want to listen to the truth.

Protesters Plan to Put Military Recruiters In Cages!

It could actually be large enough to contain a 2000lb crocodile, it of course could be carried by a group. It could also be the size of a shark cage. Think about that, when I was in HS we put a teachers car on top of a wall, the car was a buick skylark! that only took 16 guys, and it was easy. -
Also amazing how many are willing to kiss ass.

You are right, all the people who do not agree with you should stay away, and form another website. One that is more fair and even, does not possess people who are in protected classes, and can actually voice their own opinions and or concerns without being denounced by you and other mods, as being uneducated or unintelligent. For once you are right.

Protesters Plan to Put Military Recruiters In Cages!
warpedskydiver replied to warpedskydiver's topic in Speakers Corner
You keep harping about a birdcage which was never mentioned, do you really expect people to accept that it is a birdcage that they plan to imprison the Soldiers in? Get real, you are making crap up again. Bill, I know you are extremely intelligent, but even I know when you are just plain making crap up, or making excuses for others. -
Racism & Obama's Speech on March 18th, 2008
warpedskydiver replied to PLFXpert's topic in Speakers Corner
You nailed that right on the head! People keep talking about how impressive he is, whata masterful speaker he is, how he has plans for change etc. What they do not seem to want to ponder is exactly what the message is, if it is or has been consistant, and what CHANGES is he planning on making? -

Forgive me but as far as I can see, when I contrast your remarks above with your own earlier post (no.3 in this thread), it appears that you have fallen hook line and sinker for these protestors’ bait. (And regarding ‘does not require that the force be in proportion’, would you be ok with the gunning down of ‘kidnappers’ armed with feather dusters, or water pistols?) If a kidnapper was taking your daughter out of her bedroom, would you ask him if he is armed, and if not would you then only act in proportion to the threat? Stop!, or I will yell STOP! again! -
Racism & Obama's Speech on March 18th, 2008

Blacks have been an underclass in this country for about 400 years or so. Is it any surprise that not all of them might not say yes massa and revel in their status quo. Why is it that right wing racists get all in a tizzy when they get a little bit of the shit they toss out all the time gets thrown back at them. I do not tolerate it from any quarter, so to say it is deserved does not make any kind of sense. -

Brave and Elegant, or Arrogant? The Reverend is a Racist and an inspiration for Obama. (Obama's words, not mine) The Reverend supports Farrakhan. (a known Anti-Semite and Racist) The Reverend took a trip to Libya to meet with Moamar Khadafi. The Reverend blames the US for 9-11 and AIDS among other conspiracies which have no basis in fact. (unless you believe that yourself) That anger may not get expressed in public, in front of white co-workers or white friends. But it does find voice in the barbershop or around the kitchen table(Introspection?) I ask these questions and provoke these thoughts in order to make people think, think about whether or not they can believe what they are being told, or whether it is all just window dressing for the politicians who truly intend on doing business as usual. -

The attempted kidnap of a servicemember is an action that allows the use of deadly force, it does not require that the force be in proportion to the perceived threat. In other words "do it and you will be killed in all likelyhood." Unless you feel you need to rewrite the rules for U.S. Military Force Protection.
