Really? I was taught that the priorities of freefall are: 1. Pull 2. Pull at the right altitude 3. Preferably pull stable. While this may not seem such an issue at 5K I am guessing getting into the wrong type of thinking makes it a very big issue at say 2K. And what if he isn't stable at 4K - does he wait till 3K? All this just goes to show - OP, don't ask for advice on these types of things here, but ask your instructors. To the SL question, my first freefall was at 4500', so 1000' above the usual SL exits Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

hm, would be interesting to see how many of those back/tailbone injuries may have been avoided or lessened by a PLF? Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

Visitng a new DZ or jumping a new type of plane
Orange1 replied to Armour666's topic in Safety and Training
the 10ft isn't what you felt. Yup, sport parachutes are much different to student ones. I hardly felt the difference going from a Skymaster 280 to Skymaster 230, but when I went from that to a Pilot 210 it flew completely differently... much faster, much more responsive to toggle input (I nearly put myself in a spiral on the control check!!), and stall-able. Question - you say you don't know the canopy make or size...here as students we always have to log make and size of both main and reserve for each jump (as students, and then on downsizing progression basically till we get our own gear), is it not the same there? Not very experienced but re your last point .. I weigh 120lb and have deployed both 280s and 230s with no problem, I can't see that "too big" would be a factor in the deployment issues (though it would have made it harder to fight strong winds to get back) Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

I know this is a serious post but every time I look at the thread I get this image: you on a golf course, taking a wild swing and knocking someone unconscious with the ball. You are then told: "maybe you should take up skydiving" Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

What's Your Favorite Part of the Skydive?
Orange1 replied to mattyblast's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Dunno about experienced jumpers, but a friend of mine wore a heart rate monitor when we did our first jump - it kind of went off the scale at exit!! (He only did another 2or 3 jumps so no update...) Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun. -

If you have to ask here, then you don't deserve to know. Not every country has SCR. We don't. So I don't know what it is other than obviously something to be proud of. Congrats Kathleen! Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun. -
er, did you mean to land so close to those cars? Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

Wasn't the decline in hang-gliding partly because of the rise of paragliding, which gives you pretty much the same thing with less hassle? Another factor maybe, especially comparing to sports such as motorbike riding is the whole "instant gratification" thing. People don't want to sit around waiting for clouds to clear, wind to drop and slots on planes to become available. Whereas you can pretty much just get on your bike and ride. It was mainly the time commitment (you can pretty much spend the whole day at a cessna DZ just to get one or two jumps in) that saw a couple of the friends I did the FJC with drop out after a few jumps. I've done a search but can't find anything... I saw a brief (few seconds) clip on a "Pop and Politics" program of someone doing a jump off what looked like a steam tower, with a Greenpeace canopy. It wasn't clear whether this was done for Greenpeace, for a music video, or what. Does anyone know the story behind it? Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

I'm not from the US. Do I understand this right, that you only need a night jump for your D - no night jump requirements for a C? Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

Losing wedding ring in freefall?
Orange1 replied to Linas120's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
As students we were not allowed to jump with any jewellery. It's a habit I've kept. I leave my rings at home when I go to the DZ. Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun. -
so how are your 2006 goals going

Funnily enough... no, and almost everyone at work was actually really sympathetic and understanding. But very few can understand why I won't quit. Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun. -
That's how I've done most of the times in FS dives and it has been fine for me although I'm quite inexperienced. Ditto, and I'm even more inexperienced So far I have always launched from inside (I know, I know...) and the exits have been good. Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

What's it like to be a parent and skydiver?

I have a child of 5, and a whuffo husband. But he's been around aviation a while - was a military jumper, did paragliding for 8 years, done some of his pilot's licence, and he is very supportive of me in the sport (even after I broke both ankles). There is some negotiation around time - i don't spend all weekend every weekend at the DZ, and he takes care of our daughter when I jump, and sometimes they come along to the DZ but most times they don't - cos DZs tend to get boring for small kids after a long day. Re the other part of your question, yes I do think having a child makes me more risk averse. Which is not to say that shit doesn't happen. And so of course, the insurance is sorted out. Just wanted to make an observation - our DZ has 2 planes (with a 3rd one generally available for use). There have been times when only one - or even none - has been available for jumping. Planes get mechanical faults sometimes and sometimes they take a while to fix. This is not the same as advertising something that isn't there, but just be aware that this kind of thing does happen. And being bumped for tandems is pretty common too. Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

the tracking stories are interesting, every time i planned to do a tracking jump the loadmaster (at 2 different DZs) always checked that i knew what the line of flight was and where to track. however i have done stupid things, the most stupid of which was not paying enough attention to a new canopy and ending up with 2 broken ankles as a result. but the doc has just cleared me to jump again

Are you saying for example that a packer who packs a lineover that leads to a cutaway should be "liable"? Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

lol, looks like I wouldn't need to wear weights anymore if I got a pair of those! Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

I had 3 in 11 jumps on spring-loaded student rigs (none since on sport gear). I was told that they are more common for light students, not sure if this is true. In each case my controllability check was fine and I landed them all without any problem. Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

I had a Pearl Jam CD in my car driving back from my 2nd jump, and the chorus "I'm still alive" - which seemed very appropriate at the time! - now always makes me think of jumping
