  1. So is that a Mr Billvon? what did the other guy do with the rope after you left? Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.
  2. just don't make it a habit to routinely watch it after you throw it - the effect on body position can lead to some interesting openings... Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.
  3. It might be interesting to point out that this is one of the few sports where women were heavily involved at the start... do a search under "Tiny Broadwick", which may lead you to other interesting history pages.
  4. ah - is that why i was straining my neck trying to see where the cutaway puff was?? Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.
  5. I discussed options after the last pcit thread with my CI. He echoed precisely that opinion for newbies, for much the same reasons as billvon's post. I was at the DZ one day when another jumper was showing us how a packer at a large DZ in Florida had packed him a mal via a misrouted bridle (pullout rig). There was no way that his main container was going to open, and the misrouting was not evident from a gear check. Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

yes, that is exactly what the wikipedia article I quoted in the post you answered said ... but it also points out where it originates (an earlier point of discussion) Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

german "fuss" would sound like "foose" to an english-speaking person............ edited to add what Wikipedia says (note that in german "tisch" is table..) Table football is also known in the US as foosball (from the German fußball: literally "football" in the European sense, or "soccer" in American English). In German itself it's called kicker or tischfußball. The Spanish for table football is futbolín. In Iran it is called Futball Dasti In Argentina, metegol. In France, the game is called Baby-foot. In Turkey it's called langırt, the onomatopoeic word describing the sound when playing. In Italy, its name is calcio balilla, calcetto or biliardino. In Chile, it goes by the name of taca-taca. In Mexico, it is often called fútbolito. In Portugal, it goes by the name of matraquilhos, or matrecos. It is known as Jitz in some regions in Canada, but in Toronto it is often called gettone. In Bosnia, Croatia and Serbia, it goes under the name of karambol as well as stolni nogomet in Croatia only. In Bulgaria it is known by the name djaga or djagi Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

which is the same as ss... it's like using an e after the o or u if you don't have an umlaut key so, german grammar and ayers rock, can this thread drift any further??! Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.
  9. Tom, that is an amazing story. Our student handbook emphasized getting EPs automatic because in an unfamiliar stressful situation your mind reaches for what it knows. We did our FJC on a Saturday and the jumps the Sunday; I remember our FJC instructor telling us he wanted to be able to come into our huts at 3am, shout "malfunction" and see us all do our EPs in our sleep! shouldn't that be "fussball"...? it would seem to me "fooz ball" is some americanised version of the original... americans being well known for putting Zs where others have Ss... btw... back to the OP.. do you know for sure this is the reason the guy didn't hang around? some students just don't come back one day no matter how keen they seemed... 11. OK, I'm impressed with these guys. As a result of this thread I checked it out and thought the price looked very reasonable, so took out a sub. Now, I don't know when the April issue was originally published, but it's just dropped in my mailbox - 2 weeks after subscribing... even though it had to come via surface mail to SA. That is pretty darn good service! Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.
  12. He posted it to error and bug reports though... which was quite fitting on both counts actually! Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.
  13. Sid, i wasn't sure whose behalf I was advertising on, do I get commission?? Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.
  14. Well done Kathleen!!! For keeping going through the scary experiences and getting there!!
  15. some pics here http://www.sidsrigging.com/articles/What_do_I_get_for_$40.htm and packing instructions for your reserve will be in its manual. eg see under "manuals" for the reserve manuals on www.performancedesigns.com/canopyinfo.asp Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.
  16. were you belly to earth? Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.
  17. i thought i knew that pic well but somehow had never spotted the skydiver (or is it BASE jumper off the Eiffel?) before Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.
  18. to continue the Dali thread drift, Dali was one of the most publicity-conscious artists... even if no-one knows him by name everyone knows "the melted watches". Francis Bacon, Oscar Kokoschka, etc you might have a point... I'd start a poll about how culturally literate skydivers are about art, but I live in fear of having a thread moved to Bonfire Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.
  19. but you can before you put it on? Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.
  20. um...you should see it on a gear check? are there any containers where the reserve pin (and seal) are not visible on a normal gear check? (i've only ever had to check 2 types...) Edited to add: sorry just saw from his profile he is British and an earlier poster said lead seals not mandatory under BPA Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.
  21. sorry - i very seldom look at Bonfire! Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.
  22. http://sport.scotsman.com/golf.cfm?id=495692006 A FIVE-MAN team of sky divers brought play to a halt on the opening day of the Portuguese Open when they landed on the fairway, but the disruption did not affect Paul Broadhurst or Paul Lawrie. The defending champion equalled the course record of 64 at Le Meridien, while a round of 68 from Lawrie leaves the Scot well placed on the leaderboard in the Algarve. The first round was briefly interrupted when a parachute fluttered down close to where Scott Drummond, David Park and Robert Coles were playing on the fifth fairway. The parachute had been jettisoned by a skydiver, who landed safely at a nearby airfield using his reserve chute. Five of his colleagues then landed on the course to retrieve the stray parachute. The three golfers who were interrupted all finished their round in 73 blows. Tournament official Paul Carrigill said: "There was no real hold-up. The players had a look and got on with it and the parachutists were extremely apologetic." Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.
  23. Other and valid reasons for pulling reserve at a repack are given above. I really can't see that this is a valid one - riggers do make errors like anyone else but I imagine the % is very small - I mean I can't imagine any rigger out there is more consistently packing mals than not. So doing it for that reason doesn't really mean anything - there is a chance that the one in whatever (presumably very slim) probability has happened on that repack but equally it may happen on the next one he does for you - what would be nice would be some way of finding out AFTER the repack and before you have to use it, if something has gone wrong. btw I really don't understand the "because of a lead seal" bit but then I am a newbie - where would a seal have to be to prevent the container opening? 24. It's not really such a big deal on a first SL jump either because as you're thinking that, you're also looking up in amazement at this huge canopy over your head ... this was part of my point about the "one step at a time" approach. (I'm not trying to sound like an advocate for SL here, just trying for a bit of balance ) Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.
  25. The question would be rather academic with a sardine-packed cessna ... Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.
