to be pedantic, you left out the "only" in the earlier post but thanks for the clarification

Questions... i got told once that boots are not a good idea for FS in particular, because they prevent you being able to point your feet properly and thus retard both decent turns as well as tracking. 2nd question... as I HAVE broken ankles in this sport... i asked my doc about ankle support and he said... depends on what you wear, but a brace for example won't prevent a break, & something harder than a brace may simply transmit the energy (of the impact) higher and break the bone further up. (I can see how it might prevent a sprain though) Any comments on either point? Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

ditto... and welcome back! Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

yup you said OFTEN to gain separation... not exclusively Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

I was reminded of that too, but you dated yourself by mentioning it. Not a lot of present day skydivers know what you're talking about. wanna enlighten us? Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

err... i beg to differ. we probably spent half the day practising the exit count (the other half EPs) and i still didn't count. got line twists, kicked out, looked at the ground, then decided i was mad and was never going to do this again but to the OP, having already done 2 exits you should have less sensory overload than someone like me whose first SL jump was their first ever jump! Doesn't the term "cutaway" come from days when you did, indeed, have to use a knife?? Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

yes, but the point about "overbalancing" though was the rig seemed to pull me as i left and i ended up de-arching in consequence. or anyway that was how the JM saw it happen, at that point all i knew is i kept on trying to do it right and kept on f^#%ing it up. i found some kind of happy medium eventually of being far out enough but not too much... needless to say i enjoy diving out that door far more than i ever did doing a poised sitting exit!!!! ah - it's in bonfire. (knew it would be here somewhere) I'm assuming Sun reporting isn't usually accurate, as SA is not Chelsy's "homeland". And as for the bit about "the remote airfield in snake-infested countryside" i'm sure there are snakes around but i've never come into contact with them (define "infested"?) and if "remote countryside" is 20 minutes from the CBD with built-up areas most of the way out, well.... same here... btw georgerussia, i have to disagree, our DZ definitely found that smaller people had more trouble with a 206 exit. re the advice about sitting as far out the door as you can... speak to your instructor. i got conflicting advice about this from different instructors! one told me to do that, when i did that on the next jump the JM dispatching me said that by going so far out I was almost being overbalanced by the rig on my back. i remember the first time i did a good exit, i thought it was a fluke! then it just kept happening

Got my A licence and first chop!

Congratulations!! now the fun starts Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun. -
just normal tape? so if the lines snagged it would come off easy? edited to add: what if the tape sticks to the lines, could that be an issue? Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

Riggers, is this true? I'm pretty sure I read somewhere packing (as long as it isn't in the sun) doesn't harm the canopy (exactly in this context of practising packing). Then again not sure where I read that... may have been on the net Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

Hi Babi, I had exactly the same issues - and I am your height my first few jumps i had bad exits too, i felt like i just could not push against that relative wind. i was taught to be really aggressive on exit - almost as though you are punching out at the wing with your right arm, swinging your hips to arch as you jump. i was also taught to be as square with the door as i could be i.e a straight line through my arms. do you have a mock-up for that plane you can practice from? i sat with an instructor on the mock-up doing it over and over and on about my 4th jump it finally "clicked". MB, IIRC the main factor was not so much altitude but either freefly speeds and/or overloading the reserve. To everyone who has answered, thanks - fwiw I have no intention of delaying a reserve pull, it had just never occurred to me before that line twists on a reserve might be a serious problem - and from the answers I have received (incl a useful doc emailed) it seems that they wouldn't be any more of a problem than the ones I experienced on my student canopies. Wing Loadings - who is over?

Unfortunately not being smart can lead to that same conclusion Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun. -
Does anyone know if there have been any incidents where using a chest strap as a grip was a factor? Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

And a lot of people jump at cessna DZs and have other stuff like family obligations that mean they can do maybe 100 jumps a year. So? Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

Incidentally, is this any scarier than saying: The entire global Avgas supply comes from a single source, and that is in the US. Scary thought, eh? Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

Ah, but that way you run the risk of them finding out when they discover you're in hospital with a couple of broken bones. Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

It's standard at all SA DZs, though there are instances of "dress code violation". Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

Are you saying the TEL supply for the US refinery comes from the UK? This was what I saw on an aviation forum, but no idea how accurate it is: "There are only four Avgas manufacturers worldwide and following the closure of the Durban refinery, two others shut down for maintenance, leaving only the US refinery to meet global supply demands. " edited to add: a sobering note http://www.epi-eng.com/ET-EndOf100LL.htm Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

Thanks - that's what i had figured. Does a really high WL change this at all though? (asking out of interest i am still light WL!!) Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

There were major issues with refinery shutdowns due to Katrina as a significant % (I forget exactly what) of refined product comes from the area hit by Katrina, so with a shortage of refined product refinery margins surged and that is what accounted for the gap opening up between gas and crude product. You can have all the crude in the world, but if you can't refine it into anything it's pretty useless btw, I heard recently that there are only 4 refineries worldwide that can refine Avgas and that 3 of them are down at the moment - apparently leading to a global Avgas shortage, does anyone know if this is true?? I find it hard to believe but....?? I know that we have had Avgas shortages here but not sure if it really is a global issue. Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.
