  2. It'll never pass, and even if it does, the only time someone could be charged with violating it is if someone who shouldn't have been able to got access to their unlocked gun and hurt themself or someone else. If that's the case, lock or no lock the irresponsible gun owner should pay anyway.

  4. True...as i said, it was the intention. They didn't really do a good job with the implementation (go figure, gov't accountants screwing something up). But this line of questioning regarding the differences between different tax deferred investment vehicles can't be answered without a rewrite of the entire tax code. Which, I understand, Bush has received a recommendation from a group he set up to vastly simplify the code without changing the actual cash flow all that much in terms of income for the fed or who pays how much. Hopefully that's true. (let's leave balancing the field to another discussion as well). But from what I understand, it basically gets rid of all the different kinds of tax shelters and puts them under a single plan for everyone. If he does that, I'll finally have something nice to say about the guy
  5. I agree..the locks are stupid, a waste of money, and it's pretty much useless to force people to get them. But...like I said, it's not that big of a compromise for the passage of this bill. If it makes the anti-gun people feel better, so be it. I'm in the let's compromise camp, not the line in the sand camp.

  10. because i can I was a W2 consultant for years, thank you very much. Somehow I managed to save money for retirement. Maybe the thread should be about educating you on how to save without a stipend (tax break) from the gov't. Because they are two completely separate vehicles. IRA's are self directed. 401ks are "supposed" to be safer because the theory was managers were supposed to offer plans and advice to keep you diversified. There are a whole slew of rules that go along with 401ks that the avg investor has absolutely no knowledge of or about. It's comparing apples and oranges. The gov't allows you to divert more income into them because there are more contols in place. And once again, if you work for some place that W2s you but won't give you benefits, you have no else to blame. You should have negotiated your salary to take that into effect. Why should the gov't be responsible for making sure you don't screw yourself over? AND you didn't answer the question. Were you paid more as a consultant than you would have been as a normal employee? Yes, I'll bet you were. Why? To compensate you for the lack of benefits. NOW TO REALLY GET BACK ON TOPIC (hint...you strayed yourself, chum) How would increasing the IRA limit fix SS?
  11. Because most politicians and lobbyists are lawyers. They're not going to pass laws that hurt themselves. The only reason this got through was because of the massive lobbying power of the NRA. But, like I said, hopefully it will kick start the ball rolling toward full tort reform.

  13. You might want to take a look at the article on the front of the WSJ today. "How Bush Fumbled Social Security Plan". Why not do some research about the opposition from REPUBLICANS and CONSERVATIVES to his plan. And read about the mistakes that his SUPPORTERS are claiming he made.
  14. To show the promoting the general welfare through cooperation is the main reason for gov't to exist. Perhaps if people could get off their high horses and realilze that more than 35MILLION PEOPLE live in abject poverty in this country, they'd see that the gov't is NOT taking care of anybody, and neither is anyone else. How do you save for retirement when you can't feed yourself? I wish conservatives could garner some sympathy instead of selfishness. It amazes me how opposed people are to assist people in the basic necessities of life when it is a miniscule part of the budget. How about focusing fiscal conservation on pork barrell spending where it might actually put money back in your pocket instead of trying to pull food out of the mouths of babies and taking the roofs away from the elderly.

Vote. And you're reading something that isn't there. I never said anything about "welfare". We're talking about social security. I would say that keeping old people from dying from starvation or the elements promotes overall well being. Obviously many people would rather let them fend for themselves. Personally, I find that to be selfish, cruel, and just a little bit evil.

The governments job is to make sure everyone has the option to work because jobs are available. It's up to the individual to be a slack ass or not be a slack ass. New word.. It's not so that they can share their knowledge, their talents, their abilities (aka resources)? Not everything is black and white. Cooperation among people for the benefit of all is not solely reserved to socialism. Pooling of resources for the common good is and should be the ONLY reason for centralized government. "We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.   18. Ahh, that's different. But you were a consultant, I'm assuming. Making a higher hourly wage than a full time employee...right? I've worked that way before too. And the extra pay per hour is to compensate you for not getting all the normal bennies. But even if that's not the case....as the conservatives are wont to say....go find another job if you don't like the one you have. No one made you take a job that doesn't offer 401k, did they?

  21. Could be....but is it not true? Why else do humans cooperate in a society if not a need to pool resources? Can you do everything on your own to support yourself throughout your life? Would you want to? I'm as capitalistic as the next red blooded american. Extremism is never the right mix. That means being a hard core socialist like Marx, or being a hard core capitalist like Rockefeller. Believe it or not, there are some good points to socialism, just like there are good points to capitalism. The goal should be to combine all the best points in a productive balance. The Soviet Union collapsed because it went to far in one direction. I fear we are headed to far in the other.
  22. It is. When you use scare tactics to "train" someone, the first time they find out it's not as bad as you made it out to be, they think everything you said is a lie. It's the same thing with pot. People claim it's a gateway drug. And it is in a sense. Most people who do hard drugs, tried pot first (but not vice versa). But many times, they try pot, see that it's not as bad as it's made out to be, and then figure coke and lsd must not be as bad as they're portrayed either. When in reality, they're probably worse. Our nation lives in a culture of fear. It's sad.
  23. You have the opportunity to do so....no one is denying you anything. I'll admit that paying into SS for those of us smart enough to invest on our own is a sacrifice, so I'll address your last question based on that. We must contribute because we are part of society. The purpose of a society is to pool resources for the good of all.
