  1. Here in the Midwest, a 5000-10,000 acre farm is not considered small. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  2. That's hardly a small inheritance. I don't feel a bit bad about expecting inheritors to pay a tax on their windfall. A $5 million exemption is more than generous. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

  7. Sure do. Especially would like to see some of his philosophies. You overestimate the information available from grades. I'll be the judge of that. How much information is contained in a grade isn't open to debate. It is what it is. It says nothing about a student's philosophies. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! 9. Yes. Of course, that's what Social Security, i.e., Old-Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance, is, government insurance. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  10. You haven't read this thread if you think I just started referring to preventative health care. And no, I haven't established any "ridiculous notions of what health care means." Health care is a superset of medical care. you already included bike lanes in health care. That really ended the serious part of the conversation. That's not essentially different from insurance companies providing coverage of gym memberships as preventative health care. Both just make the means to exercise, i.e., preventative health care, more readily available. One just has additional benefits for transportation. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! 11. I don't believe I've seen a guarantee...in fact those annual reports have clearly stated the opposite. I'd be happy at this point just to get the negative rate of return. Even a life annuity is not guaranteed in the strictest sense of the word. But counterparty risk is minimized. Likewise, the SS trust fund is invested in government backed securities, which are considered very low risk. Being backed by the government is essentially the strongest, albeit still imperfect, guarantee available in an investment. I'm old, but not that old (I can't join POPs yet). Without any changes in tax rates (allowing the current payroll tax cut to expire on schedule) or benefits, I can expect about 75% benefits through my death if I live long enough to begin collecting. 13. Interesting. Do you have a source for that information? Forgive me if I think it sounds dubious. from wiki: The voter turnout for this election was broadly predicted to be high by American standards,[197][198][199] and a record number of votes were cast.[200] The final tally of total votes counted was 131.3 million, compared to 122.3 million in 2004 (which also boasted the highest record since 1968, the last presidential election before the voting age was lowered to 18). Expressed as a percentage of eligible voters, 131.2 million votes could reflect a turnout as high as 63.0% of eligible voters, which would be the highest since 1960.[201][202] This 63.0% turnout rate is based on an estimated eligible voter population of 208,323,000.[202] Another estimate puts the eligible voter population at 212,720,027, resulting in a turnout rate of 61.7%, which would be the highest turnout rate since 1968.[203] 9M more votes, and the margin in the popular vote was 9.5. That doesn't contradict anything in my post: It is not unreasonable to assume that most moderates who voted for Obama in 2008 will also cast a vote this November. Further, it is logical to conclude that one of those moderates voting for Romney effectively subtracts a vote from Obama's tally and adds a vote to Romney's. Math tutoring available. 14. That sounds fair, provided the kids pay tax on their income like anyone else would have to. Of course, applying the inheritance tax instead of the income tax allows those kids to get a large chunk of that inheritance/income tax free, with only the remainder being taxed. My original point was the inheritance tax hurts the small family farms and ranches. The kids can't afford the inheritance tax and have to sell the family operation to pay the tax. Which means fewer sources for food for this country. Currently, the first $5 million of an inheritance is exempt from the estate tax. That isn't hurting small family farms and ranches. 17. Credit default swaps should be treated just like insurance. If a company sells them, that company should have to set aside sufficient reserves to just like an insurance company selling an insurance policy. This would reduce counterparty risk. If a party wants to purchase them, that party should have to show an insurable interest. This would eliminate the practice of netting, where companies would buy and sell identical credit default swaps at different rates, pocketing the difference. Math tutoring available. 19. That Fairy Tale has already been debunked. Where? Certainly not in this thread. By the author himself before he got started on his Fairy Tale. But of course he felt he could criticize it anyway. Not knowing all of the the details does not imply that there is not enough known to logically conclude that Romney's claims are not mathematically sound. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! 21. I think he hurts a little more than he helps. He'll pick up some votes from far right voters who otherwise might stay home on election day, but he's likely to lose moderate votes that went to Obama in 2008 that Romney may have otherwise won with a running mate as moderate as he was when he governed Massachusetts. Those far right votes are worth one vote each, since they are not going to Obama under any circumstance. The moderate votes count for two votes each, since each one adds a vote to one candidate's tally while simultaneously subtracting a vote from the other candidates tally. The fault in this sort of zero sum math where some votes somehow count double while others are worth one...is a presumption that these people will vote for a candidate. They don't have to, and historically don't nearly half the time. But I think Quade and JCD should consider the fact that their clear partisan bias makes it hard for them to objectively measure the impact of the Ryan selection. It is not unreasonable to assume that most moderates who voted for Obama in 2008 will also cast a vote this November. Further, it is logical to conclude that one of those moderates voting for Romney effectively subtracts a vote from Obama's tally and adds a vote to Romney's. I think Kelpdiver should consider the fact that his compulsion to argue makes it hard for him to consider an argument on its merits alone. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! 24. Incorrect. That's neither what I said nor implied. Two different approaches can both be considered fair by the same observer. However, one single approach cannot be considered both fair and unfair by the same observer, provided fair is well defined. Further, depending on how fair is defined, not unfair may or may not imply fair. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  25. Like I said, the estate tax is very generous, certainly not unfair to inheritors. I don't have a problem with it. I also wouldn't have a problem treating an entire inheritance as regular income, which would also not be unfair to inheritors. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
