Funny that you mention U2, since political rants are pretty much a (non-exclusive) trademark of Bono. Heck, have you listened to Rattle and Hum, which is closely related to The Joshua Tree? I can't imagine going to a U2 show and not hearing Bono rant about a political issue or two a few times. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

Oh, shut up and tell a joke already! There is an international (beer) brewers convention. After the first day, the brewmasters from Anheuser-Busch, Grupo Modelo, and St. James's Gate Brewery decide to go to the pub for a drink. The brewmaster from Anheuser-Busch, being a real man of genius, steps up to the bar and says, "I'll have the King of Beers; I'll have a Budweiser, please, bartender." The bartender pours him a Budweiser. The brewmaster from Grupo Modelo, feeling miles away from ordinary, says to the bartender, "I'll have the most refreshing beer in the world; give me a Corona, por favor." The bartender opens a bottle of Corona and hands it to him. The brewmaster from St. James's Gate Brewery steps up to the bar and says to the bartender, "Bartender, I think I'll have a Coke." The bartender pours him a Coke. The other two brewmasters, upon seeing him order a Coke instead of a Guinness, ask him what is wrong? "Nothing is wrong," says the brewmaster from St. James's Gate Brewery. "I just figured that if you two aren't going to drink beer, then neither will I." Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! Are you kidding, you guys pay far more, get less and all the money goes into the bank accounts and investments of large corporations rather than building and maintaining infrastucture and providing services that help provide a healthyountry/economy. These discussions remind me of political discussions on BBSs back in '92, with all the character assassinations of Slick Willie (pun intended). Same shit, different Clinton. I think Clinton and Obama are both inferior to some other candidates that didn't make it past the primaries. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

Welcome to 21st century journalism. That technique has become the norm, regardless of the kind of picture the journalist is trying to paint. The problem with a state owned media is that you can't trust 'em. The problem with corporate owned media is that you can't trust 'em. On the other hand, the only problem with a media protected by freedom of the press is that you can't trust 'em. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

My reservations about using Linux without an additional OS running virtually is due to the GPL license restrictions requiring ZFS to run in userspace (if it has been ported at all, yet). However, NexentaStor can (only, at this point) be run as a virtual machine, and uses the Solaris kernel. I've heard good things about Ubuntu, but I'm not sure it is the best Linux distro for server applications. Having said that, I haven't ruled any FOSS out yet. Math tutoring available. Thanks for the link. I hadn't come across that thread yet. Most of my research has yielded threads from OS specific forums, which tend to be very biased in favor of that specific OS. OTOH, DZ.com does have its share of geeks, including one member in particular with substantial experience with FreeBSD. I'd really like to hear from those people, as well. Math tutoring available. Have you ever gone to the grocery store with the intention of just buying a gallon of milk or a loaf of bread, only to end up walking out with a cart full of stuff? Last week I went online to order an external hard drive with a gigabit ethernet port, but ended up buying a NAS server instead, complete with Xeon processor, RAID controller and several hard drives. The primary purposes of the server will be to serve as a NAS and a network router. When it arrives, I'm going to need to install an OS and format the drives. I am strongly considering using ZFS as the filesystem, and setting the drives up in RAID-Z2 (defeating the purpose of the RAID controller card). From what I've read, ZFS appears to be the file system of the future. It does have it's shortcomings, but it is being actively developed, and features are being implemented fairly rapidly. Is there any reason that would make ZFS a poor choice? For the OS, I would prefer to use *nix/UNIX™ FOSS (No Windows HoSer for me!). The obvious choice with ZFS would be to use some form of Solaris (NexentaOS or NexentaStor, perhaps?), running natively, or in a virtual machine atop Linux. As I understand, FreeBSD 7.0 also has native support for ZFS, although I'm not clear about what kind of lag time there is between ZFS updates and their implementation in FreeBSD. Can anyone suggest a suitable operating system? Most of my computer knowledge is Mac OS X related, if that makes a difference. I'm not afraid of the command line, but I prefer a GUI, if possible. Kindergarten kid suspended from school for...
jcd11235 replied to BillyVance's topic in Speakers Corner
I agree that academics should be the first consideration. What the schools administration has revealed is that, to them, appearances are more important than academics. What am I saying? This is the US, where straight teeth in your mouth are far more important than the words that come out of it. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials! -
Kindergarten kid suspended from school for...

Huh? Are you being serious? Mohawks have been extremely trendy on campus for at least the past couple of years. I seriously doubt that it's isolated here. If school officials didn't make such a big deal of it, it wouldn't be a distraction at all. It's just hair. They need to get over themselves and let the kid wear it as he wants. Floyd Mayweather gets $20 million to fight at Wrestlemania
jcd11235 replied to BillyVance's topic in The Bonfire
Agreed, but I don't hold it against Mayweather for accepting $20 million for an acting gig. Boxing is a short lived career, and smart boxers look after their retirement. While I agree that pure boxing is an ineffective discipline compared to other types practiced in MMA, do we know that Mayweather has no kicking or grappling talent? For real pro fighting, the money is in boxing, so it stands to reason that those are the skills we are most likely to know about. I'm not saying he has other skills, I'm saying I don't know. I've known and been friends with two world class fighters in my life, one ranked kick boxer and one eskrima master. Either one could hold their own in regular boxing, but both could strike hard with their legs and feet just as well. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials! -
One thing that is often overlooked in immigration debates is that as the number of undocumented workers decreases, the incentive for the companies that hire them to leave the country increases. With them also go all the jobs currently held by legal workers in the US. Obviously, agriculture is tied to a geographic location, but many other types of jobs are not. Math tutoring available.
