Newbie question on hard openings
Travman replied to Orange1's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I make the statement because a lot of people are saying they get spanked all the time by their sabre. I admit it is not a large sample size, but even if I get spanked 1 in a 100 I wouldn't say its "all the time". I psycho pack my sabre, and the person that taught me to pack previously had a sabre 190 that he psycho packed and he put many hundreds of jumps on it and he said the openings were always good. -
Newbie question on hard openings
Travman replied to Orange1's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
My sabre1 170 has no mods and has NEVER spanked me. -
I've done one week a few times. Twice from weather, once from injury.

Thats illegal for a start...

Get a hookr from fibrezone! Very comfy and mine saved my head when I met a fence. The guy that makes these is a skydiver himself, at my DZ every weekend. http://www.fibrezone.com.au

I have always psycho packed, never had any problems what so ever. Although I don't have many jumps, every opening has been great - and I jump a Sabre! I would have no idea they might spank you if I didn't see a "how do i stop my sabre spanking me" post every few weeks. When I started I did have problems with off heading openings but I have since fixed that.

I was convinced I was going to get a cut away on my first pack job. I had packed and repacked several times before it came time to jump it. It was probably the best opening I have ever had. Still yet to have a cutaway.....

What do they teach in PLF? Basically you relax and don't try to resist the momentum, then you roll - changing the direction and transfering the energy. If you have ever seen PK (urban gymnastics) you will understand what I mean. Often people are hurt in impacts (generally, not just skydiving) because they "resisted" the force - all the energy goes into the muscles trying to resist the trauma and they get injured. If you are unconscious under canopy when you hit the ground your muscles will be relaxed, its no PLF, but under a reserve you should come off better than no pull. Some of the replies from the more experience who have seen people come in unconscious do show that it is better than no canopy.

Ok, who invented the collapsible slider?

I have a sabre 170, done about 50 jumps on it, packed everyone myself. Never had hard opening. I psycho pack mine - works well for me.

What is your favourite part of skydiving?
Travman replied to Orange1's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I love the freedom. From the second you leave the plane until the moment you touch down on the ground nothing else in the world matters... -
Another myth http://www.snopes.com/history/world/cardking.htm Though the troops in Baghdad did receive decks with Suddam Hussein as the King of Spades, and other notable Iraqis as the other royals. (so I hear)

I've done a rodeo from a 182 (this requires a partner). Basically you ride someone out like they are a bull, lots of fun, someone can probably post some pics.

Australian OpRegs. 5.1.15. All freefall descents made by parachutists who do not hold a Certificate "E" must be made with equipment fitted with a functional reserve static line or an operational automatic activation device. The DZSO, in writing, may permit exemptions to this rule for specific descents. 5.1.16. Notwithstanding the provisions of 5.1.15, all freefall descents made by parachutists who do not hold a Certificate "D" must be made with equipment fitted with an operational automatic activation device. So with a D licence you must have either an AAD fitted to the reserve or an RSL. Check with your CI, some dropzone have DZ Rules about this sort of thing as well.

Too small to be a tandem master?
Travman replied to skydivermom's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
There is a guy at my DZ who is quite short (not sure exactly but couldn't be more than 5'4, probably shorter). He usually flys camera, but is also AFF and Tandem rated. Usually he gets paired up with the smaller people, but he doesn't seem to have a problem. He is very experienced though, 6000+ jumps I believe. -
Sabre 135 w/ 25 jumps ~ 1.4 WL

When you fill out his incident report at least you can say "I told you so" -
Check out the body position on this guy. http://www.smh.com.au/ftimages/2005/06/20/1119250922406.html I wonder if he has ever thought of giving skydiving a go...

The Australian Parachute Federation has recently talked about increasing the Re-Pack cycle from 6 months to 1 year. I can't remember who said it, possibly Brian Germain or someone from PD but I remember hearing that in the tests they did they found no difference in reserve packing safety for any period over 3 months ie 6 or 12 month old reserve pack jobs function just as well. I don't have the experience to pass comment, just repeating what I have heard.

I've seen some demos done by the australian army display team, similiar thing. The did a hop and pop with smoke cannisters for a gentle landing, but the public loved it. Its better the people see this than someone smash into the ground, thats never good PR.

Dislocate or no dislocate, he still jumped!

I know some people that were talking about taking a raft out of the skyvan at the DZ I go to during a boogie. They checked with the CI and they weren't allowed to do it. A major highway runs past our DZ, although all due care would have been taken it would not have been good PR if it landed on the highway...
