Geneva convention are clear: 1) Marking people as "enemy combattants" without due process by a "competent tribunal" is illegal according to the Geneva convention and therefore illegal under US law. 2) It is no excuse that "they are terrorists" as the US is under law obliged to abide by the convention in all circumstances. You may argue until you turn blue in the face whether the people detained "deserve it". It still does not make the detainment legal. We have an old jump pilot at our DZ who (if you ask nicely) will do it on jump run. You sit in the door. He puts the plane in a parabolic trajectory and gives a quick flick with the rudder. Suddenly you are just sitting in thin air. I have never had the balls to ask him, but allegedly it should be quite an experience. People tend to look quite surprised when they find themselves outside the plane with no prior warning.

I have been contacted by the people running an introductory physics course for high school students at the University of Copenhagen. They wanted to do a theme on parachutes. To that end they wanted to borrow a parachute. I fixed them up with an old not-airworthy student rig from my DZ. However, being physicists, they want to be able to make some calculations as to for example what the lift would be at this and that airspeed, and they want these calculations to be comprehesible to high school students. Does anyone here know, where I might find any such calculations? Web ressources? Books? I consider it worth the effort to help here, both as a skydiver and a physicist. Thank you very much for all the input. It seems for every answer new questions arise. I weigh 103 kg ~ 227 lbs. What size canopy am I looking for? (and will it fit in a Javelin J4?) Regarding spotting I have thrown streamers from 2000 ft and corrected my spot from that. However, I fully intend to get a good spotter with me on the load. Thanks again. I seem to have gotten it into my head that I need to try and jump a round parachute at some time. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I should go about this? I am hesitant about borrowing the old T10 from my local DZ. I would much rather if I could get my hands on a parachute that could be attached to a set of modern risers and put in a regular rig, but I am sure this raises issues of packing volume (and packing in general

When I was there, Kevin said that they would normally allow you to jump your own equipment regardless of these restrictions, just like a foreign jumper can jump non-TSO'd gear at a US DZ. This is of course not a guarantee
