Schwarzenegger denies Williams clemency plea
rasmack replied to Nightingale's topic in Speakers Corner
Sorry for being slow on the uptake here, but why? I truly do not see how it solves anything (apart from supplying revenge) that this guy is six under instead of behind bars. At the end of last year, the US had 2,135,901 persons in prison. A number that is rising with 2-3% every year. surely the 1000 executed inmates are a smaller perturbation on a prison budget of that size. I would consider it a small price to retain my humanity, but hey, it's your country. As for the deterrent angle, if it is there it is probably not statistically significant. The link is to a UCLA dept. of statistics paper published in Journal of Empirical Legal Studies Volume 2 Issue 2 Page 303 - July 2005. I realize you were replying to an equally outrageous statement, but your statement contains one very important piece of information. Apparently you think that punishment is dealt out for the victim of a crime to get revenge and nothing else. I see no other reason to even remotely consider what you wrote there or putting people to death. When they are locked away, they cease to be a problem. I invite you to look up criminal rehabilitation. It is the concept upon which most civilized societies claim that they base their penal code. You told ReBirth you didn't want to live in his world. I pray that I will never live in a society based upon the values you preach in this context. The death penalty is an abhorrent judicial anachronism best left in medieval times where it belongs. Would you mention that you are a skydiver?
rasmack replied to Superman32's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Very good example. Sometimes these things just come up as relevant. I have once used the fact that I teach martial arts to make a point in an interview. I will not exclude the possibility that skydiving might prove relevant. I would fear, however, that the rest of the interview would be spent talking about skydiving. "No, I do not do it to get a near-death experience, actually I find it quite relaxing." Interesting choice of word. What does it mean to "pursue" someone? Am I pursuing someone if I am simply playing the nice guy and by doing that is letting her know what she is missing out on? If that is pursuing then the only way not to pursue her would be to nok talk to her at all. That seems a bit boring to me... ... and his second and his third in one day! He even tried a DRCP, although it didn't really go as planned. The proud brother (that would be me) was there with a camera. I even managed to get the exit (SL out of a C-206 TU). Notice the stand-up landing in the pebbles and the happy expression on his face afterwards . I think the cold surprised him a bit though. Should the CIA be exempt from US laws prohibiting the use of torture?

So you're opposed to Bush's restrictions on Stem Cell Research? Blatantly off-topic but very very funny HF #682, Team Dirty Sanchez #227 “I simply hate, detest, loathe, despise, and abhor redundancy.” - Not quite Oscar Wilde... -

Bjork! Pop stars don't count. Damn! I was going to say Aqua Oh well, seriously. The closest thing we have had are instances of prisoners with mental disorders arising from solitary confinement. Solitary confinement is common practice in Denmark in cases where the investigation is ongoing and you therefore don't want the prisoner to have communications with the rest of the prison population. If that is torture, well then of course we are guilty as charged, and the US is free to stage mock electrocutions and beat people to death. I take it you've never been there. Switzerland is a federation with no less than four different official languages... I can assure you that there are vast differences from Graubünden to Geneva. The Swiss federal army was the price to pay for neutrality and independence from for example France. Whenever I have had an out landing my cell phone has been ringing more or less when I hit the ground. If necessary a car has been sent. I would like to believe that this is standard. I'm European. I don't know shit about your inflation. I merely asked because the numbers were meaningless without that piece of information. HF #682, Team Dirty Sanchez #227 “I simply hate, detest, loathe, despise, and abhor redundancy.” - Not quite Oscar Wilde...

In all fairness I think you are putting a bit much spin on this one. He held that marriage was an acknowledged legal institution whereas many other relations were not. This is true and does not in itself amount to discrimination. HF #682, Team Dirty Sanchez #227 “I simply hate, detest, loathe, despise, and abhor redundancy.” - Not quite Oscar Wilde...

Has the numbers been vorrected for inflation? If not, they are not really comparable from year to year. HF #682, Team Dirty Sanchez #227 “I simply hate, detest, loathe, despise, and abhor redundancy.” - Not quite Oscar Wilde...

One question. Do you mean to say that there is a greater inequality between people in the US than in Switzerland, or do you mean that the societies are different? The first possibility would seem to suggest that your society is inherently disposed towards greater levels of crime, whereas the second would imply that the Swiss for some reason can handle guns, while you can not You believe (it appears to me) that with lots of crime you've got to have a gun around. I seem to see that only in a somewhat more... peaceful society is it a responsible action to have liberal gun laws. Oh well, I guess this is one of the cases where we should politely agree to disagree. Too bad we can't do it over a beer. Apparently he was more credible than US intelligence. Furthermore I respect the fact that he could not be pushed into making unfounded accusations of Saddam possessing WMD. It is called integrity. Well apparently you can miss a lot of info just by being in the states. The Niger yellow cake thing was well known not to be true in Europe. The papers claiming it had been proven to be forgeries. Is it some kind of tribute to me? Ah Prof. Kallend. This concept can be hard for some Americans to grasp. The doc makes his own decision, no? True, but you know very well that no doctor would ever assist in the suicide of a healthy person.
