  1. Looks like a wonderful time. Sorry Millie wasn't able to join you for the whole thing. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  2. Yes, you're missing something. Static line jumps are only the beginning of the student progression. Most programs have a student do five static line jumps before they move to their first delay, generally 5 seconds. The student then works up to 10 second and 15 second delays before going to full altitude. Both AFF and Static Line students have to demonstrate all the skills on the A license progression card to become licensed - they just do them in a different order. 3. Bump ... this weekend is one of the free weekends. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  4. I assume you've already discovered www.skydivingmovies.com? That could keep you amused for months. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  5. It's a "booking service" called 1-800-Skyride. It's not an actual dropzone. http://www.funjumper.com/skyride/ Check the dropzone listings here or on the USPA web site (www.uspa.org). As for specifics on the legitimate Oregon dropzones, you may want to call Eugene Skydivers to get their current status update. It's a great little dropzone that has (unfortunately) had a number of issues with the city council. I believe that was resolved recently, but it would behoove you to double-check. 6. Vectran is the only option. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  7. And such is the cycle here. It's been that way probably since the beginning - it definitely has been since I've been on for the last almost-5 years. And Roo, consider that it's more likely your perspective on the place that has changed ... not so much dz.com. That's not surprising. 8. I can get by bringing one gallon jug of water plus my 32-oz Nalgene bottle on "normal" days (under 80-85 degrees). When it was 100 a few weekends ago, I went through almost a gallon and a half that I'd brought myself and begged & borrowed another half gallon or so from friends ... and *still* stopped to get more for the drive home. So ... big difference in what you need on a super-hot day. Glad it wasn't more serious. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. 9. Don't forget to pre-register for the boogie. This came from the DZ's message to the NCS list: (530) 753-2651 - I'm pretty sure you can pre-register over the phone with a credit card. 10. Nunya:8:0 Four 8-way jumps with MadJohn (jdobleman) at Byron yesterday, and four hop & pops today as part of a great canopy course led by avgjoe and skybytch. Really great to have a refresher and focus on canopy stuff. My second opening today was almost *really* interesting but it turned out just fine. 11. A quote from 41 upon landing: "Just because you're an old guy, you don't have to sit drooling in a corner." "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  12. More relevant, this is a privately-run community, run by a South African with servers in Canada (? I think). Of course even if it were run by an American in the U.S., it's still a private community and as such the owners (or their representatives) can enforce standards of behavior and conduct, and can edit or delete whatever the fuck they want. Don't like it? Go start your own online community. (That was meant to be a general "you," not necessarily you specifically, NovaTTT). 13. I just watched your video and I think I had as big a grin on my face as you did after you nailed the instability drill in freefall. Rock on! 14. It is fun - especially when tracking! "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  15. I was having that problem with one of my booties. I happened to be at ZHills at the time, so I had Sally Hathaway sew an elastic band on the bottom, behind the bootie. No problems since. Edit to add photo. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  16. This old thread brought some out of the woodwork (one of whom isn't with us anymore, sadly, and one of whom posts under a different greener username now). http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=2338696 "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. 17. As someone who has sold a Spectre 230 and a Pilot 210 on the used market (and will have another Pilot 210 for sale within a few weeks), I can say that they're not that tough to sell, especially if you're willing to be patient. I think it took me a month to sell the Spectre and two weeks to sell the Pilot, both for within $50 of my asking price. If I'd been willing to take more aggressive offers, I could have sold both faster (but I didn't need the cash that quickly so I was willing to wait). The Spectre really held its value, BTW. I bought it used with 450 jumps and a new lineset for $850; sold it 2 years later with 200 more jumps for $800. Make the safe choice - you'll be able to sell your canopy. (And if you're willing to wait about a month for a Pilot 210 with about 500 jumps and a brand-new lineset, PM me. ) "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. 18. Come up to Skydance on Sunday June 14 - there's a canopy course scheduled starting at 9, including several jumps and video feedback. 19. Clearly we need to start an Andy Garcia fan club. I remember going to see The Untouchables when it first came out. Everyone was going on about that hot guy who played the lead (one of Kevin Costner's first big roles). Yeah, he was aight, but I was all googly over Andy Garcia. Have been ever since. 20. Oh, fuck, how many people have said that after their 10th or 100th jump and are out of the sport within 2-3 years, even without major traumatic injury? It's cute and most people truly believe that they believe it, but if you've really been around 12 years surely you've seen more of those than people who become lifers. Hell, I've only been around 5 years and I've seen a lot of people come and go already. I know I'm still in "tourist" status and won't claim anything otherwise till I hit the right milestones. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  21. That, right there, is the red flag for me. His motives could be purely professional, but they may not. Knowing how (and wanting to!) extricate yourself from a situation like that is a skill that people in their early 20s may not have. Early in your career you're much more willing to "go along to get along" so that you don't risk your career. It may cause her to let an uncomfortable situation go farther than someone who is a bit more established and secure in their career might. Then you add the fact that she's admitted attraction ... well ... sounds like a potentially bad situation. However, if for professional reasons it's important to spend time with this client, perhaps she can bring along a few other coworkers. It can be very casual, like "It'll be great for you to meet Joe - he handles [X] within the company and Jane is my counterpart in [Y] product." 22. Saturday's actual weather showed how you shouldn't rely on forecasts ... except for the period of high/gusty winds in the late afternoon, and some bumpy winds up high all day, the weather at Skydance on Saturday was about as perfect as it gets this time of year. I don't think it broke 75 and the only clouds to worry about were high, puffy, and out of the way. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  23. Remember, folks, we're talking about gifts for a stalkee, not a girlfriend. So think like a stalker. No matter what you get, remember to leave it in her bedroom so she knows you care enough to break into her house to leave the gift in a special place. Think creatively - perhaps a homemade stuffed animal, stuffed with shredded paper that you pulled from her recycle bin. Or a mix CD with great songs about unrequited love, like "Obsession" and "One Way or Another" and "Every Breath You Take." 25. This is Speakers Corner. You don't expect me to actually read, do you? "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
