  1. The political divide of the 60s around the war and the draft and the civil rights movement was at least as large as today's. The biggest difference is social media and communications. Actually most of today's issues can be traced back to then and even further in the past.
  2. Massachusetts is MA Maine is ME Maryland is MD Michigan is MI Montana is MT Missouri is MO Minnesota is MN Mississippi is MS Last but not least, MB is Manitoba Today's lesson is brought to you by the letter "M".
  3. In the context of the questions I asked, that is not really an answer. It's more of a pout. I think maybe you actually do need a babysitter.
  4. Today's stupid wounding is a little different. I'm didn't even know a "black powder revolver" was a thing. https://www.yourerie.com/news/local-news/woman-accidentally-shot-in-crawford-county/1988895165 Is that the kind of firearm Steve Earl mentions as "a cap and ball Colt" in The Devil's Right Hand?
  5. I don't see how Uber can survive when they start having to compete with smaller local companies. I would not invest there....
  6. And while we are at it, why the hell should anyone be required to have a reserve parachute canopy to skydive? Edit, I suppose you could make a strong case about falling meat bombs damaging other people and property......
  7. And that is where libertarianism starts to get fuzzy. It's hard to protect me from you without protecting you from me. Laws are for society more than for individuals. But, although we are social animals we all have to look out for number one. And that is where the libertarian ethic breaks down for me. Want to be truly free? Try being a hermit. Otherwise you are part of a tribe and have to make some concessions to the group. How many, and will a King take advantage of you? That is our constant battle.
  8. Obviously you are well informed about building and made wise choices. What about those who really have no idea about this stuff. Without codes and inspections should they be left to fend for themselves? There is no shortage of shady developers and contractors willing to build fire traps for unsuspecting people to live in. Caveat emptor is good enough? Let the fire fighters deal with the fallout?
  9. If all those things are wrong in your eyes why bother worrying about the catalytic converter? How do you feel about the building codes that your home had to follow to keep you safer from fire and other hazards? Just how de-regulated do you want your world to be?
  10. I don't watch it. Or much of any TV. So I Googled G.O.T. sexism. It seems like some people think so. https://www.google.ca/search?source=hp&ei=onfTXIPhB9Tk-gTj5ajACA&q=g.o.t+.sexist&oq=g.o.t+.sexist&gs_l=psy-ab.12...211.10987..12565...0.0..0.177.1770.0j14......0....1..gws-wiz.....0..35i39j0i131j0j0i3.JXSs0Uc-Iy8
  11. Lots of things are mandated on cars. American law has shaped the design of cars around the world for decades. You choose catalytic convertors to complain about here? What about those expensive seat belts and airbags, or headlights and a horn, And tempered safety glass, who needs all this expensive shit! Where is my CHOICE?
  12. Just in. I'm thinking that this move pretty much guarantees the House will have to move to an impeachment hearing. Trump may or may not understand and want that as part of his re-election strategy. https://www.cnn.com/politics/live-news/barr-contempt-mueller-report/h_f677b79348a74773806928740abb438f
  13. Yes, it is universal to complain about taxes. Always has been and always will be.
  14. "More money" is merely a stand in phrase for more resources and a greater emphasis. Like everything in life you get out of the education system according to what you invest. Money is a large, but not exclusive part of that.
  15. Your world is full of choices. You just don't want to be bothered doing what it takes to run without a catalytic converter. Move to Mexico and you can do whatever you want. But you want the advantages of the USA, so you live there and moan about shit that really doesn't make a lick of difference to you.
  16. It's not your money. It's Caesar's money. That's why you will go to jail if you cheat on it.
  17. Now you're just talking bullshit. The man clearly indicated a willingness to pay a share. We all pay a share, the theory is that we pay some share partly according to our ability to pay. It will always be a never ending battle how much that will be. The bottom line is that no one gets rich without a society based on rules. The fairer the rules are the more wealth will be generated. Less corruption equals more wealth overall.
  18. It won't take much. The van runs back and forth from the loft to the bowl picking up TIs and passengers at a weekend DZ. It adds up to about 2 tanks of gas a year.
  19. Yea, we have a basic 48v club car at the DZ. It needed batteries. We looked at the price and bought a used Ford Winstar van instead.
  20. No, I meant what I said. I am convinced that we can never know the true nature of existence. Any answers we find can only lead to deeper questions.
  21. Well then, isn't that a convenient way to brush off those who don't believe? But it does fit in with my idea that we can not ever answer the question of why we (or anything else) exist.
  22. This 2 year old victim is going to be okay. Thanks for the thoughts and prayers. https://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/story/news/2019/05/07/bellevue-child-suffers-non-life-threatening-injuries-after-accidental-shooting/1126626001/
  23. Then start a thread about it. Society, even American society, is actively engaged it fighting against impaired driving. There are many ways you can help.
  24. Hey, no violence in this thread. These are all about the "accidents". You know, just like slipping and falling. Or dropping a glass and breaking it. Only with larger consequences because they involve killing machines. No one meant anyone any harm here. It's just the way shit happens sometimes.
