As I recall there were forces from the right side of his own party who needed to be accommodated. The USA is almost but not quite ready to accept giving healthcare to all of it's citizens regardless of means.

I have also been guilty of responding in a similar personal way in this thread. I will try to take your guidance under advisement in the future. It is not hard to say the same thing without using the heavy emotional tool of family.

But far more often it does not. And you can not show that the gun laws were what lead to the oppressions. Because it did not, the oppression led to the gun laws. The free world is far larger than the good'ole'USA. And somehow it manages to stay free without a right to bear arms. The argument is hollow.

We all should keep in mind that as bad as slavery in the US was, it was merely a subset of the slavery brought to the new world by all the colonial powers. The people of those nations knew it was wrong all along but it brought in a ton of profits and of course the evil that was and still is the church approved for the same reason. The struggle to be free and equal continues to this day.

Like many Americans you have an emotional attachment to the 2nd. And you won't give it up, I do accept that. But you keep saying that your nation would be lessened and that somehow America would no longer be America without the 2nd. You keep saying you would like to see regulations on firearms that are impossible to imagine under the 2nd. What I am saying is that America would be better, not worse without the pervasive gun culture that the 2nd has produced. Eventually there is going to be a backlash against what the gun culture has done to America. Because too many people have taken what was a good idea 240 years ago and turned it into a farce.

Somehow Canada manages to have both responsible gun ownership, and free speech with fair elections all without a constitutional item about the right to bear arms. Your belief in the necessity of the 2nd amendment is patently and demonstrably unsupportable by the facts. Only in the emotional part of your brain is that true.

But it is a test of the constitution, the right to speak freely. How popular or unpopular the cause is not relevant. Does she or does she not have the right to say unpleasant things that may cause dissention or other unpleasantness? Does the right to free speech include the right to say things about the school, which is a public school and is mandated to provide her with an education? Clearly she could be expelled from a private school. But in this case it is an agent of the state.

We have all heard the answer to this many times. You don't shoot to kill, you shoot to stop. The death of the person shot is just an unfortunate consequence of the fact that the most sure way of stopping someone with bullets is almost always deadly.
