  3. Michele, the thinking inspired by this thread led me to secure time off to travel to a Scott Miller canopy control seminar and coaching in mid-June. It'll be my first formal canopy instruction. Thanks! Skydiving is for cool people only
  4. What does this have to do with having a wingloading BSR? Even if Amsterdam were the filthiest city on Earth, that wouldn't make having canopy size guidelines bad. It's silly logic. Skydiving is for cool people only

    Busted!

Oh my God I'm so embarassed. Skydiving is for cool people only
  6. But the thing is, that DOESN'T work. Unfortunately, the converse is true -- peer pressure among jumpers is to downsize as quick as you can. God forbid you be "bored" under canopy. Skydiving is for cool people only
  7. I'm familiar with the non-linear scaling of canopy sizes, but that sounds really extreme to me. I doubt that's accurate. Anyway, one would hope that in the rare case of the 90-lb jumper, instructors and staff would help him or her choose a safe canopy. There's a woman at my dropzone who probably doesn't weigh 100 lbs, and she's having a hell of a time trying to get them to let her jump something at 1:1. Skydiving is for cool people only
  8. Sounds to me like the handle check worked exactly like it was supposed to. Congratulations on saving yourself a reserve ride or worse! A lot of people don't pat their handles just before exit. Skydiving is for cool people only
  9. A logistics question -- would people who already are skydivers get exempted? Or would this force half the skydivers out there to sell their gear? If that's the case, I don't think this would ever fly. However, I do think that it could be implemented for new jumpers. Sorta like in 2000, I only had to make seven jumps to graduate AFF and be able to do whatever I wanted, but then the ISP was introduced and you gotta have an A license to even do RW with a non-rating holder. (Under USPA rules, anyway.) Skydiving is for cool people only
  10. Also, maybe people would spend more time under a lower-wingloaded canopy instead of downsizing when they hit 201, 301, etc., since selling and buying canopies is expensive and time-consuming. Right now, people buy canopies that they plan to "grow into" so they won't "get bored." Maybe this would encourage people to actually spend some time learning how to fly. You know, my kneejerk reaction is that I support this. I'll think on it. Skydiving is for cool people only
  11. What about higher-performance canopies? Is a Stiletto at 1.1 safer than a Spectre at 1.2? Skydiving is for cool people only

  21. Update: Well, features didn't have the money to create a position for me, so they asked my idiot boss if he would share me with them, so I could do some writing and editing and they'd groom me for the next opening. He said yes, but then the next day told me he'd changed his mind. So I blew a gasket, and went behind his back to talk to the managing editor. Next thing I know, my idiot boss approaches me and says he's changed his mind again, and I can indeed work in features. Then he said that if I work part time in features, my days off would have to be Tuesday-Wednesday. I blew another gasket. As it stands now, my gasket-blowing has garnered me a) part-time work in features department b) Saturdays off Not exactly what I wanted, but it'll do for now. Skydiving is for cool people only
