Well, they loved me, they loved my editing, they loved my writing...but in the end, they couldn't pass on the applicant who had 20+ years experience in the biz (I've got four). However. They tell me they are trying to create a position for me -- an editing/writing hybrid sort of thing, designed to groom me for an editorship in the future. And in the meantime, they are trying to work with my moronic, backstabbing boss on a way to share me -- where I'd work up in features at least a couple of times a week as well as in news. Duey was part of the Skydive Dallas team that taught me how to skydive. In fact.... On my first tandem, there was this AFF instructor sitting across from me in the otter. I was terrified, and he could tell. So he smirked at me and lifted his legs and plopped them in my lap. Duey is very good at helping people chill, being the king of chill himself. Such an awesome guy. I was sorry to see him and Sue leave Dallas. I hope he defies expectations and comes out of this as good as new. Good luck, Duey. Skydiving is for cool people only

Having booties is like having GIANT OARS tied to your feet. It's going to take time to get used to the different kinds of input you have to give. Try some two-way drill dives, so you can figure out what happens when you move your legs around. Flying in a jumpsuit is an awesome thing! I bet you'll end up loving it.

1 huge bash thrown at my apartment:0:0 My good friend and co-worker is moving away, so we decided to have a few friends over to my crib for a little goodbye get-together. Holy crap. I have no idea how many people were actually here, but it was a lot. I think the last person passed out at 5 a.m. I could tell they weren't skydivers because they put the empty beer bottles in the trash. No jumps, but a highly satisfactory weekend. Yay! EDIT: Almost forgot, got drunk dialed by Wingi. I'm glad I have caller ID or I would have thought it was Beavis. Skydiving is for cool people only

SIM: Skydiver's Information Manual. (A United States Parachute Association publication.) IIRC: If I Recall Correctly. These are extremely common acronyms in skydiving and/or the Internet. No need to be snide. Just ask. Skydiving is for cool people only

IIRC, the SIM tells students to give their main handle two additional tried if it doesn't come out the first time. Maybe that's OK when you're dumping at 5K, but I'm horrified when jumpers tell me they have a try-three-times policy. It's way too easy to lose track of your altitude when you're fussing with something. If I can't get it on the second grab, party time is over. This is me having a hard pull: "Fuck. FUCK! *foomp*" That's the sound of the reserve dumping at terminal. What do y'all think? Skydiving is for cool people only

When I had a year in the sport, I piped up on every thread I could in the topical forums. Now I'm closing in on three years and I tend keep my mouth shut -- partly because I started to notice how dumb the others with similar experience sounded, and became horrified by the likelihood that I sounded the same way. Aiiiieee I hope so. I just talked to the boss before she left, and she said that she and her boss and the guy who used to hold the job (he loves me btw; I'm writing book reviews for him now and he thinks I'm great) will get together Tuesday and discuss the three candidates. "It's going to be a very tough decision," she told me with consternation. She also said, "It's been really fun! You're VERY good at this," and she seemed sincere. I'd guess I have the edge, but I just don't know. Sigh. Anyway, I should have the news sometime next week. Skydiving is for cool people only
