Hey Pammi... I don't have anything against posting opinions and such. But saying things like, "This DZ is unsafe," without any real backup scares me, because it's so subjective. At least twice I've seen really bad things posted about DZs that I'm familiar with that are out-and-out wrong. On the other hand, saying "I think this rig is unsafe, and here's why..." doesn't bother me, because it's clearly an opinion. Anyhow...I, personally, don't have a problem with something like AndyMan's story about SDC down there, and I'm especially glad other people chimed in with another take on the situation. Whatever happened, it's food for thought. They say there are three sides to every story: His, hers, and the truth. I, too, am hungry for info about DZs and gear manufacturers and the like. But I just hope people are responsible about posting information for all to see. There are a ton of people who read these forums, and we are essentially publishing our comments.

Ah JT, you're probably right. I just get ornery when journalists are accused of being in it for the glory when I'm sitting at work on a Saturday night fucking with stories while the rest of the city gets plastered on the River Walk. Billy -- thanx to you too.

I will bet my left tit Mr. Pearl was making a whole huge fuck of a lot less than that, and he was a 12-year-veteran of one of the top newspapers in the country. Journalists don't make good money. They do the job because they're idealists. And that's all I have to say on this, except: If you think by honoring Daniel that means disrespect toward our military, then you've got a chip on your shoulder I don't want to deal with.

Yes. I feel very isolated sometimes. Journalists are viewed as predators by so many, when almost all of us have nothing but the noblest of intentions. Facts from a story I worked tonight: Pearl was the 9th journalist killed since the Afghan war began. More than a dozen others have been robbed, arrested, kidnapped, or shot at. The Taliban had offered a bounty of $50,000 to $100,000 to anyone who killed a journalist. More than 1,400 journalists have been killed on the job since 1812, more than 700 of them covering wars. 118 journalists were imprisoned at the end of 2001. Take a look at the coverage in your paper or on the local or national news, and think about the people who work constantly to keep us informed -- which translates, in many ways, to free. Damn, that was preachy.
