  2. No calls Jo, but if you will post your research request on the forum I'll see what I can find for you. I've never seen ultra suede on a parachute rig, but I've never been accused of being stylish. Maybe you could find it on a pimp parachute? 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. 3. Jo wrote It's been decades since I had a security clearance but my dim recollection is that documents or files didn't have "CLASSIFIED" labels but rather "RESTRICTED" or "SECRET" etc which denoted the level of classification. Special terminals were used to access SECRET files and their screens couldn't be viewed by casual observers. The special terminals were designed so that radiated video signals could not be picked up at a distance and decoded. They had RF shielding and RF radiation suppression hardware. I think they were called TEMPEST terminals. Others here must have had clearances. Am I recalling it correctly? 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. 6. Accomplices, if there were any, wouldn't need a pardon or amnesty. The statute of limitations shields them. Period. The John Doe indictment only charges the guy on the plane. 7. Jo wrote Nobody in the govt is keeping the lid on Cooper in my opinion. Coverup is a convenient excuse for our inability to ID Cooper. The only possible "coverup" i might agree with in this case is done by dirt, brush or water. Cooper's John Doe criminal indictment that tolls the statute of limitations was federal not state. The governor of WA couldn't pardon it, only a US President could. Another coverup story busted. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.

  9. Jo wrote I think you mean a riggers seal. It's a lead seal crimped onto thread and the crimping tool embosses a symbol unique to that rigger onto the lead. The purpose is to show that a rigger has packed a chute and that it hasn't been tampered with. If the rip cord pins are pulled the thread breaks. Intact thread loop with a seal means nobody has opened the rig since the seal was applied. "Pingers" (military rescue beacons) operate on 243.0 MHz and transmit a swept tone. 12. Farf I'm not one of those jumpers that picks a fight with anything a Whuffo says and I dont expect them to be especially appreciative of being treated in a civil manner. And yes, jumpers feel they are free to opine on all sorts of non jumping stuff here and that their opinion shall take precedence over anything contrary posted by a Whuffo regardless of the Whuffo's subject matter expertise. 15. Blevins wrote I used to rebuild master and slave cylinders but unless you can get a mirror finish on the interior bore they wont last nearly as long as the new ones. The imperfections will abrade the O rings. How is this related to parachuting? Believe it or not at lesat one early square sport canopy had a HYDRAULIC reefing system to slow down the inflation of the canopy. It used a hydraulic cylinder as a snubber. The eventual optimal solution was just a piece of fabric with four holes in it that fit over the suspension line groups coming up from each riser, called a slider. Until the slider was invented all sorts of far out designs were tried. Who of the old timers who lurk here can tell me which rig had the hydraulic reefing system? 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  16. Carr wrote If you knew me Farf you'd know that I don't like stuff like your CEO's sneaky greed move on the pre IPO options. Not at all. How you can equate my post to condoning greedy two faced behavior kinda puzzles me. But lots of things about human behavior puzzle me. I'm one of the few jumpers that welcome Whuffos on Dropzone. A Whuffo is just a person who hasn't yet jumped. They are not lepers or morons. Still, Dropzone is a website for skydivers. Don't get so upset if some of them bash this forum. I'm not saying it's deserved, but it sure can't be a big surprise. From your demeanor of late I'd venture a guess that Marla hasn't called. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. 17. Farf wrote: Jumpers like to bitch about things non jumpers do (such as paying child support and staying sober). Jumpers really go nuts when non jumpers opine about anything related to jumping. Most of the people here aren't jumpers, and we are opining daily about jump related stuff, so ths forum is a target for negative comments and complaints. Just get used to it and thank Q for not acceeding to those who want to quash this forum. I cant take any complaints about forum posting volume seriously. It's so easily ignored, bandwidth isnt an issue for text posts and frequent forum posting doesn't overheat or lock up any high quality server chips (because Snow designed them). 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. 18. Jo wrote Cheer up Jo. Dont confuse disagreement with disrespect. If you were on " AUTOMATIC IGNORE" nobody would respond to you and many do, including me. I hope you are able to make your Spokane trip. I also hope you will show up at the 2013 symposium. I hope Farflung will too. Can we put the Blevins book review inquistion and venom fest on hold for a while and discuss NORJACK? Farflung would make a fine trial attorney and I am not being sarcastic. He has demonstrated a real knack for cross examination. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  19. We are getting some current info on just how difficult it is to find someone who jumped over rugged terrain and mostly likely went in without a deployed canopy. They know where he jumped and they STILL cant find him. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  20. Although a flashlight would be nearly useless to spot a night landing, a bright parachute flare might help if it were deployed at the right altitude (fairly close to the ground). There is no evidence that one was used by DBC however. A wilderness landing at night would be pretty damned scary, but they've been done safely many times from distressed aircraft by military pilots making their very first jump. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. 21. I'd like to see that Smoke Jumper article. I thought Sheridan Peterson's screen name was eagleeyepete not eagleeyejoe, but he may have used many variants. What always surprised me about Peterson's published comments about NORJACK is that had he been DBC he would have carried a flashlight to spot his landing. Peterson, as a highly experienced jumper, knows how useless that would be. I wonder why he said it? Amazon, you agree about a flashlight being pretty useless for "spotting a landing at night"? 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  22. Jo wrote Jo, Nobody wants there to be a radio navigation/communication angle to Norjack more than I do. I wish that his bomb battery was 12 volts but from all that I've read it was probably a large 1.5 volt drycell, pretty useless for anything involving radios but suitable for lighting up glow plugs. Regardless of what I or Farflung say you cling to these impossible ideas that Duane used VORs or other ground based transmitters to pinpoint his position and plan his exit. You havent mentioned the vibrating VOR detecting corset for a while which gave me hope that you were coming around, but now you have returned to this Duane Weber radio nav fantasy. Give it up Jo, you are wasting your time on this one. McCoy landed close to his home town and managed to stash the loot and get home undetected. He was a military pilot and knew plenty about VORs and the like, but managed to navigate visually. Cooper, if he navigated at all, did it visually. I see a stashed walke talkie as a distant hypothetical possibility, but not a radio navigation device. Not in 1971. Radios probably played no role in Norjack. There is ZERO evidence that DBC had any radio gear. It's just fun to speculate as to how he might have linked up with an accomplice after landing. If DBC was radio savvy he should have brought a small tunable VHF receiver to listen in on comms between the plane and the tower, NWA and FBI. That way he could see if an ambush was being planned. They were available in 1971 for $29 at Radio Shack and looked like a pocket transistor radio. You could sweep the entire aviation band in a second with the manual tuning dial and find plane comms almost instantly. It had broad bandwidth which made finding nearby strong signals dirt simple and fast. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  23. Good summary Farflung. Clever scam, amateurish execution. I was surprised that a seasoned journalist was so gullible. The investigatve journalists I've known are pretty street smart and sceptical. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  24. There is a kinder gentler way to get Internet Service Providers to come around to your price point. Just keep saying no to the phone sales pitches. They keep getting better and better. The catch is that they are teaser rates and escalate often doubling after 6 months. Just put in a cancellation order during the last month and the pitches will start coming hot and heavy. Still, the even better rates require you to actually terminate your service. I am currently getting 25 MB Internet speed for 29.95 per month through COMCAST. The pitch was from a reseller that must have called me six times, each time offering a better deal. No need to slap anybody around or mislead them. Just keep saying no and be patient. I will be doing some more radio jumps in the spring. One will use a late 60s vintage CB walkie talkie to communicate with someone on a mountain peak about 15 miles from my DZ. Wish Marla still had Dewey's CB walkie talkies. I could use ones allegedly used by Cooper himself. It proves nothing other than CB radio could have been used by a jumper to communicate with an accomplice at a considerable distance. Last year I made contact with a ham over 100 miles away while I was descending under canopy using a 1 watt VHF walkie talkie. I did a hop and pop from about 14,000 and made my contacts on the ride down. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  25. Jo wrote Jo, I admire and respect your fiscal responsibility and frugality, but take exception to one aspect of your story.
