I flaked out of both Skyfest and WFFC this year. Started a new job a week and a half before. It's a bytch being an adult sometimes. Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard.

Injuring yourself and apologizing for it ground zero
BIGUN replied to captain1's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Mostly, when something like that happens, people are apologizing because they think they affected someone else's day negatively. Most times, people are worried about the skydiver and the skydiver is worried about affecting them. It's all about caring for each other. Let it go. No worries, mate. It's kinda like packing - a little different isn't the same as wrong. I have a bit of an advantage on most because of my length. Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard.

How bored will you be if you downsize too quickly and find yourself busted up, in the hospital, with six months of physical therapy? According to your profile, you've got 15 jumps. Take your time, downsize in steps, follow BillVon's downsizing checklist (Safety Section) for each step down prior to downsizing again. A coach can teach the generic portions of the first jump course (most everything except the dive flow), give the oral exams, etc. They can take students on Categories G & H. The introductions to group freefall - swooping, adjusting freefall rate with the formation, docking, etc. And, train/observe those canopy control and landing objectives as defined on the "A" license proficiency card. As discussed in a similar thread, the intent of introduction to group freefall is for the Coach to act as the formation allowing the student to have a physical reference to "target." While the "intent" is not clearly defined, they can slowly introduce three and four ways towards the latter part of their 25 dive program. And, while not also clearly defined as to who can be in those three or four ways, we have a rule of thumb that it must be another Coach or someone whose got a couple hundred jumps and done lotsa formation work, not someone with 30 or 40 jumps. A Coach may take grips to exit, may use the AFF hand signals to assist the student, but may NOT pull for a student at pull time. AFFIs-Intent of SIMS concerning group freefall training
BIGUN replied to skyhussy's topic in Instructors
Most of the DZs I've been to and our policy has been (as you stated): As I stated earlier, sometimes you'll get a Coach that is a little over the line and you've got to put a stop to it. It's really been my experience that most DZ's utilize the progression you mention in section one. You do know that you can make specific recommendations to the USPA S&TA Director regarding suggestions for clarifying "Intent" in the next SIMS version? It is hard to visualize textually, but I'll try. First,I should share with you that I've got a 38" each. Picture me on the step with both feet squatting down facing forward, left hand on the strut, right hand in their back in the burble. The student is hanging on the strut and I give the the "Go" command. As soon as they let go, I flick my arm back and down at about eight o'clock from their position and to the rear As the P/C catches air and begins inflatig, they too are falling. By throwing it at their eight o'clock as they release, the P/C come to about nine-o'clock (perpendicular to them) catches the air and whips behind them. That help? AFFIs-Intent of SIMS concerning group freefall training
BIGUN replied to skyhussy's topic in Instructors
I'm thinking that most 100 way L/O's are going to have a lot of input on that. The intent was to have the coach be the "group" and to learn the proper procedures for swooping, docking, et.al. before moving up to four ways. Having said that, there has been more than once that I've had to time-out a group going up with someone wth 10-12 jumps on a four way; so you're right the opportunity to misinterpret is there.. 100th jump comming up soon, what to do!!

Whatever you decide, it'll have to nekid!! Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard. -
THis is nightjumps...changed my handle to Bigun. You want to keep the P/C in the burble during the climbout. It's when you tell the student to go and they release that you toss it down and aside. No twisting involved. Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard.

I defy you to open up a Dell, Compaq (HP), or Gateway (which now owns emachines) and tell me the difference between them and an emachine. Metaphorically speaking; if your house is your local calling area, then I said that. In both cases, my solution was as stated - "If you're on a limited budget..." and need a year to build the business, then my solution will cover that. If money is no issue; then I would recommend the Toshiba or Sony for laptops and Cingular, Sprint or Verizon with a Treo 600. For as long as I've been back in the sport, people have been saying "Educate, don't regulate." And yet, most every rule in our BSR's is a result of someone getting injured, killed, or because someone saw the potential for these two things happening. For example, the PLF. Been around 60+ years and still the best method for preventing injury. You are to be commended for instituting a mechanism of pause on your DZ. It may not be perfect, but it's a baseline for people to at least ask for more information. Perhaps prior to purchasing something based on bad information or the casual "you can handle it" or "It's going to be a little hot, be sure to come in wings level for the first few jumps," you will be given the opportunity to have an in-depth discussion with someone whcih may prevent injury or death. Laptop [http://www.emachines.com/products/products.html?prod=eMachines_M2352 Cell phone For in-town local coverage only; Cricket is a good choice. Unlimited anytime minutes and 500 free long distance minutes per month - $45.00, but you have to buy the phone becuase their is no 2/3 year agreement - it's month to month. Once, you go out of your local calling area though, the phone is dead. No coverage. If you're prone to travel on occasion and need a cell; you may wish to consider a Sprint "LOCAL" service which gives more minutes for less money, but charges you a roaming fee if you travel. THe way to determine is gauge how many minutes you might use when you travel versus their Regional or nationwide coverage plan. Blackberry/Palm Pilot. Basically, these can be either a wireless PDA or a cell phone PDA. A PDA is a minature computer that houses the ability to access your appointments or word documents or excel spread sheets. On average the PDA's can cost $100 for the low monochrome end or $350 for the upper end Compaq or Palm Pilots. There are two sides to this coin. You can get a celluar phone free with Sprint, Cingular, et.al. ANd then buy a PDA for around $350. Or, you can combine the PDA and Cell phone into one package like the treo 600 or Blackberry 7000 series. If you decide to go with Cricket, you'll have the cost of the phone plus if you decide to buy a PDA, you're up to $450.00 at which point you may wish to consder an alternative carrier whose network support Treo's and Blackberry's because you get both the phone and PDA in one unit. Here's my suggestion for those on a limited budget: Get the laptop first and a free cell phone with whicchever carrier best suits your needs. Ensure that the phone has either an IR port or that you can buy a data link. There is some software out there called phonesync and datapilot, whereby you can "download" all "Contacts and appointments" from MS Outlook to your phone (Nokia 3595, for example) using the datalink or IR port to/from your laptop. If you are one of those people who doesn't need 300 contacts and your appointments in your phone, you can also use MS Outlook to Create your contacts and appointments for use in a daytimer, day runner or Fanklin series day keeper. The way to do that is to go into MS Outlook and for example - select contacts. Then go to "File\Pgge setup and scroll right. Let's say you choose "Medium Booklet." A popup box will occur which will have tabs on it. Select the "Paper" tab and go to the right side of the box. In that box is a selection of all the top Day keeper series for whatever size three or seven ring daykeeper binder you have. Select Print preview to ensure that its what you want and the right style. If not; repeat. Once you're satisfied, print it out, three of seven hole pucnh it and stick it in the telephone section of your day keeper. You can do the same for your calendar. On that note, if you already have a printer... lets say an HP inkjet of some kind. Windows XP will generally have the driver for it and once you plug it into the back of your laptop a box will popup that says, New Hardware found and tell you what it is. It'll ask if you want to intall it as a printer and make it your default printer - in which case you'll answer both as yes. If for some reason you stick a printer on their that XP doesn't recognize, you can go to that printer manufacturer's website and download the driver and install it on your laptop. Hope this helps...
