  1. Usually chicken for me, though sometimes beef. I rarely cook them though. I crunch them up, add about 1/3 of the seasoning to the packet, shake it up and eat them dry. Try it if you haven't...I made fun of a friend for two years for doing it before I tried it and loved it! Especially great if you are backpacking/working in the field and need something really light to carry that can help fill you up. I keep half a dozen packs in my fireline gear when I'm working in wilderness areas. Killing threads since 2004.
  2. Hehe...glad I'm not the only one. It took me less than a week after buying my bike to realize the hard way I needed to put a house key on the ring with my bike key. Killing threads since 2004.
  3. Looks like a turkey feather to me. That's one of my favorite Florida parks. I spent two years with Florida State Parks as an AmeriCorps member and did a fair amount of work in that park - mostly doing chainsaw work clearing and blazing trails. A beautiful place for sure! 4. I loved my eTrex Legend (that I lost after leaving it on the roof of my vehicle when I drove away) and I love the Map 60Cs I have now. I really like the slightly larger screen of the Map 60 series compared to the eTrex series. Whatever line you go with, I would definitely get one that allows use of an SD card to increase memory. It's nice to have the option to plug in MapSource maps and use it in the car for directions as well. Killing threads since 2004.
  5. All of these stories about being let go with a warning are killing me! I got a ticket on Wednesday for 55 in a 35 while visiting my family in Atlanta. I grew up there and have never seen a cop anywhere near where I was ticketed nor have anyone else I told about it. The cop even admitted that just about everyone around me was going just as fast and that it was my unlucky day since I was the one his laser landed on. I'm not upset about getting a ticket as I have gotten away with far more than I deserve, but I was bummed to get picked out of a crowd! He was cool enough to knock the citation down to 14 over which keeps the ticket in GA from being reported to Texas and being posted to my license. Killing threads since 2004.
  6. why is someone who is drunk driving in complete control of theirs? Not sure I understand. Isn't the reason someone under the influence gets arrested for a DUI because they are considered NOT in complete control of their actions? Killing threads since 2004.
  7. Do folks that admit to smoking usually end up paying more on insurance premiums? I know I've always been asked about smoking, but I've always been able to say no. Have never been sure. I know someone that changed insurance and had a previous bout w/ respitory issues due to smoking considered a pre-existing condition. Sorry for the seat belt thread hijack! Killing threads since 2004.
  8. I agree to some extent. I think folks should be allowed to ride without a seatbelt if they choose, but I think getting your ass shredded by a windshield because you weren't wearing a belt should either make your insurance invalid, or that you have to pay a higher premium as someone that knowingly ignores safety features. I have no interest in paying high insurance rates because other folks choose not to take advantage of safety features and in turn cause insurance payouts. Killing threads since 2004.
  9. One of the most hideous things I've ever LOVED! Next time try dipping it in peanut butter, preferably chunky. Killing threads since 2004.
  10. Where do you order from? My favorite little place is down here in Goliad County. McMillan's. Just got listed in the Texas Monthly article and was chosen to represent Texas this past week at some event they were having in DC. Sucked because it meant he had to close for the week! 11. I wish I had checked dz.com to see that this was happening yesterday! I flew in to Atlanta yesterday morning to visit my family for the week. Brandy - I'm so glad the weather finally held and the jumps were able to happen. Best, jason. Killing threads since 2004.
  12. Congrats! I'm relatively new to the game myself but I'll second the thoughts of others and say get that MSF class early! In my class it seemed like the few folks that had been riding for a while were a little more jaded about the experience, feeling like they didn't really need to be there. As a result they just kind of coasted through the extreme basics to start without paying a whole lot of attention and later in the class when the basics were put to use they had trouble. Just teaches you to think about things you likely won't get learning on your own. Have fun and be safe!!! Killing threads since 2004.
  13. I saw the article below and it made me wonder who else has injured themselves in a less than awe inspiring way. I'll have to admit that I've thrown out my back in such thrilling ways as flushing a toilet, turning off the water in the shower and (though admittedly a little more exciting) knocking out a Michael Jackson crotch grab leg kick spin move after a few too many beers. I've had lower back problems for years that I've trained myself to work around, but it's that random time flushing a toilet with the handle on the opposite side, etc. that puts me out of commission for a week. Always fun explaining that one! http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/blog/big_league_stew/post/Brandon-Inge-angles-for-a-lucrative-pillow-endor?urn=mlb,90675 Friday, Jun 27, 2008 8:53 am EDT Brandon Inge angles for a lucrative pillow endorsement By 'Duk We've heard about players getting hurt while sneezing, while sleepwalking through a nightmare about spiders and after kicking an iron bar stool. But we had never heard of a pillow-lifting injury in baseball — that is, until Detroit Tigers' everyman Brandon Inge reported an overstuffed owie on Wednesday, earning a feather-paved (and probably overdue) path to the injury list. The details, from the Free Press: "It was the stupidest, most freakish thing," Inge said Wednesday, explaining why he had just been placed on the 15-day DL with the pulled side muscle (oblique) he suffered 3 1/2 weeks ago. "I have a 3-year-old son who sleeps in the bed with my wife and me," Inge said. "I was trying to push the pillow down behind his head (two nights ago), and when I did ... I repopped (the strained muscle). "You take swings in baseball, and it's not as bad as pushing a pillow down." Upon hearing this story, manager Jim Leyland said, "That's a first." It definitely is a first, but I think anyone who's getting up there in age — like myself and Mr. Inge — can relate to feeling a little pain in the obliques or lower back when doing random things. Heck, while formatting this blog, I threw my back out three different times. I'm guessing a few people probably did while reading it, too. It's a dangerous world out there. 14. I suggest keeping it to something that folks actually get together and do together vs. collecting money. At the same time it's nice to do something for others, typically a holiday party/get together, etc. is also a pretty important chance for employees to take a step away from the norm for a few minutes and feel appreciated themselves. Obviously folks will have different levels of interest in the type of activity, so it could be tough. I spent two years in an AmeriCorps program with the Florida State Parks and some of the best volunteer groups I had come out were companies doing this type of thing. I always worked it so they could spend a morning working (paddling a river cleaning up garbage, re-planting native trees, beach clean-up, etc.) and then had the rest of the day to enjoy the park on their own, often with some kind of cook out, etc. They essentially still had a low key party, but did something to give back to the community at the same time. Just keep in mind that this type of event is usually meant as a thank-you to employees for a job well done (or for putting up with management and you should try to make sure it is still seen in that light. It's a rare person that's going to pipe up and say "no I don't want to work at a soup kitchen, I want MY party!" but I can't imagine there wouldn't be at least few that would like to. 16. I just had to walk upstairs and get my computer when I realized that both freakin' teams are the Bulldogs. I feel like an asshat watching parts of the last two games, watching recaps and reading about it online and just now noticing! Props. Killing threads since 2004.
  17. Unfortunately I wasn't able to see the whole game, just the end which I was happy to catch minus the nerves had I been watching the whole thing. I won't get to see the last game. Killing threads since 2004.
  18. Yup, but I'll take 'em when I can get 'em! Should be interesting...Fresno State is 4-0 in elimination games. Killing threads since 2004.
  19. I've never been able to find it again, but a few years back I read something that quoted a study done about various types of accidents and when and who they happened to. For snakebites, they studied addmittance to emergency rooms compared to televised Auburn and Alabama football games. The number of people showing up in emergency rooms for snakebite treatment dropped tremendously any time the games were televised and all the local drunk yahoos were inside watching TV instead of outside playing with snakes. 20. I just stepped on one of the biggest rattlesnakes I've ever scene recently. I spend the better part of every winter and summer doing prescribed burning and it's a given as the fire is lit that all sorts of stuff will come crawling/hopping/etc. out over the fireline. I'm typically very aware, but a couple weeks back I was having a lot of trouble keeping my torch lit and was preoccupied. A huge engine was driving along next to me and was so loud that I didn't hear any rattling, but I noticed the guys in the truck freaking out and point down at my feet. I looked down and and saw a huge snake wriggling all over the place. Somehow I managed to step within about 6 inches of his head which left him repeatedly trying to strike my leather boot but without much force behind it. I've never jumped so high and so far in my life. I swear my heartbeat must have been up over 250 for a few minutes. Coming up on all sorts of snakes is a daily occurance in the places I work, but I'm still working on un-puckering from that meeting. Once it starts getting warm I wear my snake boots for all field work, but on fire I have to wear my shorter (10 inch) and thinner leather fire boots. Sure wouldn't mind seeing some regulations changed to allow snake boots out on fires! Killing threads since 2004.
  21. If I recall correctly, he looked for his life to be summed up with: "Shit, he was just here a minute ago!" As a couple others mentioned, he was more than a celebrity. I have incredible disdain for celebrity in general, but he was an icon. In an interview from a few years back he giggled a bit and said "pretty cool, huh" when asked about having his name as a footnote in legal history following his Seven Dirty Words act making it to the US Supreme Court in regard to decency standards. 22. Have you checked out the Motorcycle Safety Foundation website and searched for a class near you? Every basic rider class I know of that people have taken included use of their bikes. The main reason I really suggest going that route is so that you can actually get on a bike and ride around and make sure you like it before you lay down the cash for a bike. When I took the class there was a woman in there who went out and bought a decent sized Harley ($$$), decided she wasn't as comfortable as she should be so she took the class. She was a mess in the class and by the end of it just decided that riding wasn't for her and was going to sell the bike. In my brother's class two people decided halfway through that it just wasn't for them. You are excited about the idea of riding, and rightly so as it freakin' rocks, but if it's possible why not try it out in a class beforehand rather than blow your wad on a bike and potentially find out it ain't for you. In the class you might even have the chance to try a couple different styles of bikes. If you take the class, you can always ask the instructor what dealer they have an agreement with for replacement of bikes and potentially get a really good deal on a bike that's been loaned out to the training class. It might come with a few scratches, but it will be low mileage and well maintained. Edit to add: If the dealer is telling you that it's not worth it to take the training if you can't do it on your own bike than you've got a shady dealer. I had two try to convince me that it would be a waste of time to take the class on a bike that I wasn't going to be riding. Killing threads since 2004.

  25. All very true...also gave me the chance to ride a couple different types of bikes (they had a few different types of cruisers and a handful of Ninjas). The place I took my class has the course painted on the parking lot they use and after I bought my bike I was able to go back and essentially put myself back through the course on my own machine. Very beneficial and gave me a boost of confidence on my own equipment that was a bit larger than what I took the class riding. Killing threads since 2004.
