Possibility of Transfer to Millington, TN
crotalus01 replied to shward's topic in Events & Places to Jump
WTS is my home DZ. Lots of friendly fun jumpers and possibly the best pilot and jump plane in the country - 7 minutes from takeoff to 14.5K. Huge landing area with virtually no obstacles, indoor heated/air conditioned packing area, in-ground pool and RV hookups. Approx 1 hour or so from Millington. WTS is open year round on weekends, but best to call when its really cold to make sure. Hope to see you out there this spring! As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD... -
I do not use one and am low time myself, but I was trained to release the RSL for a water landing, landing in gusty conditions where you may have to cut away the main to keep from getting drug, landing on an object such as a building, and to never use an RSL when performing CRW jumps. Of course in all cases but CRW it was stressed "assuming you have time". It was also stressed to avoid those situations to begin with. I am sure there are others. Swapping out reserve pillow for D ring?
crotalus01 replied to fizzbuzz99's topic in Gear and Rigging
He is wanting to change from the pillow TO a D-ring - reread the post Captain. As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD... -
I have a 170 main loaded at 1.4 which almost everyone on here says is too much for me with my jump numbers. My instructors told me I would be fine with it, and I trust them. My reserve, however, is a Raven 218. I have had 1 high speed and 2 low speed malfunctions and I gotta tell you I was GLAD to have that much fabric over my head after my cutaways, especially since my high speed mal (broken lines and spinning like hell) resulted in multiple linetwists on my reserve (which flew perfectly straight while I kicked them out). Just food for thought. On the other hand, please DZ.Com people stop talking out of both sides of your mouth! The most parroted answer on here to low timer questions is "Ask your instructors". Unless, of course, the instructor doesnt agree with your opinion. Then its all "Your instructor is an idiot" or "they just wanted to sell you that canopy". You guys cant have it both ways... To get back from far spot under x-brace.
crotalus01 replied to stayhigh's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Okay question: In a canopy course I took taught by Luigi Cani, he told us the best input for a long spot was 3/4 brakes. he related that he thought for years that rear risers were best, and someone (forget who, I think a PD Factory pilot) told him it was brakes. they did several test jumps on the same canopy loaded the same, and the PD guy got farther in brakes every time. Luigi said that when he finally rode brakes, he matched the distance the PD pilot was getting. When he was asked, he said this concept applied to ALL canopies, x-brace to Manta. Comments? The balloon has to be descending to compensate for the loss of ballast (the jumpers). If the balloon is not descending when the jumpers leave it will shoot up so fast that it can force all of the hot air out of the balloon and cause it to crash. As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD...

A Sabre 1 190 of course. Funny thing was the opening didnt feel all that hard. My buddy on that jump watched my deployment and told me the canopy was coming out of the bag as it left the packtray. When we found the main it had 9 broken lines on the left side. As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD... -

My 2nd cutaway was a nasty spinner from multiple broken lines. Deployed at 2100', chopped at 1800' reserve was open (with linetwists) by 1500'. As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD... -

2000 feet is just fine. If I still had my Sabre I wouldnt have a problem getting out at 1500 feet - I would be under canopy by 1400 feet if it was a slow opening As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD... -

Unnecessary asshole replies like this are why many many people I jump with refuse to post on this site. What is it about the anonymity of the internet that brings out the worst in otherwise decent people? As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD...

According to the USPA: Looks like most of those fatalities were with people that have more than 400-500 jumps. (going by median jump numbers) with the means showing it happening much more to higher jump numbers. I have yet to see this honestly and objectively addressed on these forums. The data seems to say that it is the experienced jumpers that are killing themselves under small canopies, despite all the worries about Joe Blow jumping a 1.5 w/l at 300 jumps, or Johnny Public jumping a Stiletto 190 at 200 jumps. And exactly how is this different than, say, going through AFF with your two buddies as your AFF-Is? "well, hes our buddy, and his forward motion wasnt all that bad, yeah he tracked in a circle and I had to put his hand on his hackey but...." Maybe a bit extreme example (or maybe not since we have all seen folks that should not be jumping that have As or better), but most everything is subjective when it comes to performance evaluation. Unless you come up with a system that has checks of the checks that the Instructors do this is always going to be a (potential) issue. The Good Ole Boy network is not run by just two or three people... As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD...

The last 2 R44 jumps I did the pilot told us we could all hang if we wanted (3 of us) and he didnt care what we did as long as we didnt push off. As for buckling the seatbelt back, if it is not the shoulderstrap variety it can damage the fuselage if it gets out the door. As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD...
-
Does that depend on the type of heli and/or the pilot? I have 3 heli jumps from a Robinson R44 and on all 3 the rotors were pitched such that there was no rotor wash coming down - the air was almost as dead as a balloon. As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD...

Question - how is jumping a camera on a solo (why anyone would want to I dont know but they do) any more distracting than a newer jumper trying to remember which point to turn on a 4 way? Or an 8 way? Seems that anything can be a distraction if you allow it to be... As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD...

Ideas on making sure nobody goes missing at major DZs?
crotalus01 replied to BillyVance's topic in Safety and Training
J had a pretty good system at Skyfest this year. Each jumper got an ID card when they registered. When you manifested for a load, you put you card in a slot on the board for that aircraft, and picked the card up after you landed. The biggest problem was that noone was used to it so lots of folks (including myself) forgot to grab their card after landing. I'm sure that system would work quite well once everyone got used to doing it. As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD... -
I read some bad reviews on here so I was wary, but as this was the only DZ within 50 miles of my campsight (and they had a Cessna 206 which I had never jumped before) I decided to give OSC a shot. Boy am I glad I did. This DZ is geared towards Tandems. However, The day I was there they had 9 AFF students, and a group of exchange students doing tandems, and I still managed to get a jump in in the 3 hours I was there (albeit a solo). The staff and locals are super friendly (even Manifest!). The landing area is HUGE, and mostly obstacle free (watch out for the rolls of hay though). And the airplane (Cessna 206)...I have 1 jump from a 186 (hate it) and multiple jumps from a 195 (love it). This is more like the 195, it has a large door, a large step over the wheel to help get to the strut, and holds 5 people pretty comfortably. The pilot is really good, he even spots for you (personally I spotted as well but he was right on the money). He cut the speed so much that when I left the plane for about 3 or 4 seconds it felt like a helicopter jump. Overall a very positive experience and I wish I had had time to do a couple more jumps. The biggest drawback was the damn wind - every time I have been in OK it has been windy, but DAMN - I really wanted to jump, because the winds were blowing a steady 8 and gusting to 32! Fortunately the landing area is so friggin huge if you just take time to plan your pattern (and are willing to walk a bit) you can get some pretty clean air to land in even with the gusty conditions. I do recommend this dropzone. A fun airplane, friendly locals, and nice scenery. I gave the lowest rating (1) to Services only because there is no N/A rating.

It probably would be the end for some dropzones, especially small cessna ones. I know of very few vidiots who started with the experience required by the manufacturers (actually none now that I think about it). Did you follow the manufacturers requirements (assuming you film tandems)? Anyways, just playing devils advocate - I dont jump camera so I really dont care. As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD...
-
You guys are obsessed with the number 200. Perhaps there is a reason its a recommendation and not a BSR? Just think, if every jumper followed the Requirement by a few Tandem manufacturers that they need 500 jumps total and 100 camera jumps in order to film a tandem... No clue. Its not really an issue though - I have learned to take at least a 6 second delay - then it opens just fine. As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD...

Yes, I pack it the same for terminal or subterminal openings - maybe that is a mistake. Keep in mind almost all of my subterminal openings have been for CRW or just altitude hop&pops. The last sub opening I had I took a 2 second delay and it opened like my old Sabre - I had a welt under my arm for over a month from that one... As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD...
