LOOK AT THE NUMBER OF JUMPS I HAVE BEFORE TAKING MY ADVICE first off, the majority of tandems appear to have...not necessarily hard...but definately NOT soft landings. and I've seen quite a few come in hard (I practically live at the D.Z) my first solo landing, instead of doing a staged "flare, flare flare", which I needed at the time because I wasn't used to the feeling, I did a FLARE. stopped about 5 feet off the ground, straight on my butt. sure it hurt a little, but it made me learn and I have a great story to tell

Ok, I have a group of buddies that wants to head down to Eloy over X-mas. However, as I was just asked to come along and don't know anything about Eloy (haven't ventured to ask them, they're not completely sure) I have some questions. Do they require cypress? What license do they require? What is their "altitude" load? How big is their landing space? How many people are estimated to be in the air at one time? (Under canopy and in freefall) cost per jump? Are hop-n-pops available? (stupid question but I'm not sure if a bigger dz. varies in this area as I've only been to 2) Are there a lot of extra seminars on canopies and freefall, etc. to take and do they cost and an estimation on this cost? What is a suggested # of jumps I should acquire before venturing there and is currency a big deal for jumping there? (I average about 6-10 jumps a week, in the air approx. 4 -6 days out of the week) Thanks! BE THE BUDDHA!

Dear sweet Jesus, ok man, you jumped in this waaaay too late so I'm not gonna go through that whole thing again, but anyway Dude, just...try to read what I wrote and understand it, "MY NORM" speaking of the situation w/ calculus and algebra, not w/ skydiving stupid internet language barriers always getting in the way of a perfectly good conversation -
DISCLAIMER: LOOK AT MY LOW NUMBER OF JUMPS BEFORE TAKING ANYTHING I SAY IN TO CONSIDERATION I'm only approx. 40 or 50 jumps away from that switch between 190 and 170 so I still remember that feeling of the "whao, this canopy responds sweet" anyway, OBVIOUSLY, test it out up high and you'll find...not a whole lot of difference in response, except that you no longer feel lik eyou're kind of comming down and guessing, your input=canopy input...I loved it :) anywho, even and smooth...there really should be no "at once or staged" set in your mind, it's in what you feel in the response of the canopy. In my opinion, getting locked in to the "at once or staged" mentality could get you hurt as no one landing is the same. Instead, do what you were hopefully doing w/ your 190. input judging by the canopy's output. Popping up on a 170 really isn't all that bad, even w/ gaining speed from riser turns as long as you PLF, no biggie, but I will tell you that jamming down brakes on that canopy (as on most any other canopy) WILL Cause you to pop up, makes for great crowd entertainment BE THE BUDDHA!

no, he's right, if your lines are worn from obsessive ware. if one jumps all the time and has a really buissy life, neglecting to check his/her lines, the lines could get worn where the slider gromets come to rest on the risers. me and whats his namey both witnessed a guy come in for a swoop and *SNAP* went one of his A-lines. detached from the canopy. luckily for him, he was about 20 ft. off the ground and it snapped at a point that caused him to swing under and send him sliding across the ground on his back. got up and walked away ....lucky bastard BE THE BUDDHA!

no no no, you took that the wrong way. I understood his advice and took it to heart, I was saying "nice try" in the attempt at comparing something that seemed out of the norm, when it was nearly my norm :) don't think me a non-listening ass just yet, I heard it, and listened to it. BE THE BUDDHA! -

in this instance, why would you just initiate a flat turn, providing you have enough momentum to do so? The only thing better than sitting down, reading brian germaine's book and drinking some ice-tea, is knowing that you're at your place of employment, out of anything to do, sitting in the break room, and getting paid to do so I want you all to know that this book is opening my eyes a lot. again, the information being presented to me is what's shaping me, rather than being told I"m going to die over and over. this new information is making me re-think things. (not slowing my intensity towards learning and mprovement, just the plan in which I attack the obstacles of ignorance) In all honesty, this book may have extended my life-span BE THE BUDDHA! -

Hahaha,it's interesting that you used this specific example because in highschool I took algebra 1 and 2 and then went on the advanced track and got straight in to a calculus course, nice try though BE THE BUDDHA! -

this is what I know about stalling, Toggles level, pull down slowly so as to really feel where the point is. once the canopy stalls completely and the tail does it's little foldy collapsing thingy, let the toggles up just a little bit and steadily to get back in to flight. when I am doing a jumpf or just practicing canopy stuff, I pull really high (in the saddle by about 4500) and usually stop practicing stalls by the time I'm at 2 grand. suggestions? tips? please? skyhighkiy replied to skyhighkiy's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
hey thx for the post, Yeah, I've practiced stalling my canopy multiple times on the majority of my tiny amount of jumps. I've twisted my risers around and flown backwards and given input to the lines to turn while flying "backwards"...... But back spins? *curious* how do I go about doing this? tell me tell me tell me!!!! -

hey man :) I'll try and throw one up here after this weekend, depends on if I get enuff jumps in (I usually like to warm up w/ 2 or 3 landings after taking monday and tuesday off from jumping) But yeah, I'll post em up in this category, L8er! BE THE BUDDHA! -

hahaha, treejumps, you're a funny guy I believe that I know absolutely nothing compared to what I could know about the amazing world of skydiving, that's why I'm always in here saying things like "anyone have tips on this? what are some books I can get? Look at my jumps before you listen to anything I have to say" That's why I've been so hungrily reaeding every bit of info I can get my hands on, and why I'm reading brian germaine's book. I know very, very little about the skydiving world. That's why I need people like you...well....maybe not people like YOU, you may try to get me killed. but you know, more experienced skydivers. see now...this doesn't really make sense to me....if Idon't care about something, and I don't want to put my 2 cents in about how much I know....I leave that thing alone. my attitude, if you've ever gotten through a single post of mine without getting angry Is one of, I'm obsessed w/ the sport, I want to progress quickly, I realise what Ii'm doing at my level is EXTREMELY dangerous, and l make sure other ppl are away and discourage other miniscule # jumpers from trying what I'm trying. I'm a sponge for info on canopies and flight and I want to talk to other members of this sport for information on it. In order to learn to avoid the ground, rather then being told repeatedly I'm going to hit it. Jumpsp, skill=0 My attitude is great. It's not cocky, I'm nothing special, I just wanwt to progress I had a good long laugh when I read this one. I believe it should be revised "You can not teach those who you are not willing to teach" b.t.w. hookitt, I never told U, great 1st post -

Have a 2nd, and a 3rd opinion. aaanywho, yeah, I recieved brian germaine's book in the mail today and am about halfway through it now, absolutely awesome, I'm lovin it. the post about brake approaches and flat turns'n'stuff (freeflyl drew, this is just a general reply now to the replies) I've been practicing flat turns and brake appraoches, etc. since halfway through my 4 IAFs in training, I know, still very little experience in it, but I"m consistantly working on all that stuff too :) Phreezone, yes, my mentor does nice hooks. It's one of those guys that everyone goes outside to watch when he makes a landing. nearly every non-tandem landing is a hook. Chaps, in response to "why did you do it"(write my post). I wrote on here because I consider skydivers a group that's fairly exclusive, although welcoming. I consider skydivers a family, and the only people that can even begin to understand anything I"m talking about. talking to wuffos is fine....but talking amongst brothers is way more fun. ManBird, if there's anything I'm not, it's a goatfucker. CAmels, maybe. but goats? come on now. mm, idea, I'll record some landings this weekend and throw up the links. feel free to tear me apart then Sianara! P.S. anyone have any stories of bad landings they've done themselves? BE THE BUDDHA! -

ooh well, at least I tried to share my experience w/out hearing the same thing repeated that everyone on this forum has said to me...in fact, someone will probably take this sentence and reply to it. It's kind of like when you get a really sweet car that you're excited about and want to tell all your friends about and they start pointing out flaws. But, I guess I can re-iterate one thing to shoot down at least one part of the warnings against me. I'm being closely observed and trained by an extremely experienced jumper (somewhere around 10,000, tandem master, master rigger, IAF instructor, coach) that we all consider a safety freak. He has seen all my landings (He took me on my 1st tandem and has trained me since day 1, and all the way through the course) and has encouraged me to continue what I'm doing, as long as I don't get any more intense than what I'm doing now. aaah, well, anyway, blue skies to you all and many happy jumps :) BE THE BUDDHA! -

well, I posted about...a week and a half ago about how I was progressing 90* (front) risers closer and closer to the ground for my landing. On sat. I went out for my 1st jump (#50) and pulled high (4500) messed around w/ the front risers for a bit to get ready and made my final cranked the front left riser down and came out of the 90 high enough to have to pull the right down with it for about 2 seconds, flare and drag the foot through the pees, popped it up at the end and walked away. I've made about 6 landings like that since, and I"m lovin it. Yes yes, I know, I know, I'm a crater waiting to happen, I'm gonna die or break somethin, blah blah blah, it's all been said so don't bore me w/ how I'm going to kill myself, we'll all die some day. I just wanted to share my experience because I"m excited about it :) and also to ask about more tips on this kind of landing, any information whatsoever is accepted, I've been reading extensively on canopy control and ordered Brian Germaine's book a couple of days ago. Thanks!! BE THE BUDDHA! -
Comming out of michigan, I guess there's not a whole lot you can do based on our shpanky weather. The Urge to spend money you don't have in the hopes of that blissful fall is there, hell, I spent money I was supposed to spend on college books to complete my course :) I would agree to try and go as far as you can.....IF you have thhe money to do it...I know my prior advice was to stop where you are.... WAIT I just figured it out, I figured out how you can pay for the rest of your student jumps, buy a cheap rig and be able to get almost enough jumps for your A, including membership fee and license Fee sell a horse! Bad spot + pilot 'chute in tow = ...
skyhighkiy replied to Frenchy68's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Also, when pulling on the rears, you dont really need to pull them down and out, simply spreading them will pull the rear of the canopy down, and its easier to hold. That will help if you are upwind of your landing spot. If you are already downwind or your LZ and its pretty windy, pulling slightly on the fronts may help. BE THE BUDDHA!
