  1. I run a small development team. Fun & challenging. 4-way skydiving is challenging too, but in a different way - it's more about challenging who I am & the way I see and react to things, whereas IT is all about what I know and my ability to deductively reason. Very different and fairly complementary
  2. I don't feel I have enough experience to reply to the rest of the thread, but the above sentiment is something I will second. Apropos of nothing, there's an saying in Ireland: "Americans live to work, Irish people work to live." It was in common currency when I left in the late nineties. Life is all about balance; how you achieve that balance is up to you...
  3. For the newcomers, the numbers are: humps (or other significant event) : jumps : beer owed. Mine: :5:1 5 4-way jumps with my team. Weather & sinus troubles curtailed Saturday and wiped out Sunday's jumping. Beer owed and paid for my rather fucking cool new canopy - a Samurai 170. Yum .
  4. After 4-way jumps, I usually pitch just above 3000ft. On my Spectre, that puts me in the saddle around 2500ft.
  5. Three people - one 6' 8", one 5' 9", one 5' 1". All can wear the same rig. Real example. It's quite common for tall people to have disproportionately long legs. Makes finding gear easier . Dave (6'3", with disproportionately long legs)
  6. So learn to pack properly! It's a pain in the arse, but it'll stand you in good stead. Oh, and I've been packing a brand-new airlocked 170 this weekend. It slows me down a little, but it's no big deal if your technique is good... so take your time & sort your technique out.
  7. In Australia, you need a B licence to start freeflying. To jump in a group bigger than three people you must have a freefly crest, which demonstrates your ability on your head and on your feet.

  9. Winter? What's that? Oh yeah, it's when the jumping finishes at 4:30pm instead of 7... Just so ya know, Picton has year-round jumping. You'll get blown out occasionally in Sep/Oct due to turbulent Westerly winds, but the rest of the year is just fine... Oh yeah, and it's just coming into spring/summer now .
  10. (For our American friends, a 70kg person will be about 175-180lbs out the door.) Wingloading is your exit weight (you + rig) in lbs, divided by the size of your canopy in sq feet. 10kg (22lbs) is a reasonable weight to budget for a rig. A sensible first canopy choice would have a wingloading of approximately 1.0. So, for you a 170 (1.03) to a 190 (0.93) should be fine. If you weighed 100kg, you'd have a wingloading of 1.42 under a 170. That'd be stupid for a first rig, and you wouldn't be allowed jump it at Picton. Listen to your instructors; by and large they're a sensible bunch. Also, you should be aware that Phil has to approve your first rig. He's not going to let you jump something too dangerous. After all, life-flights are no fun for anyone. Additionally, you can't jump your own rig until you've done at least some of your B-rels. Talk to an instructor about this... not being an instructor I don't know the details.
  11. Check your policy first; this may invalidate it.
  12. To the best of my knowledge, in US English the punctuation belongs inside the quotes, and in UK English punctuation belongs outside.
  13. What was the name of the first-Thursday-of-the-month night that Digweed useta run at Heaven circa 2001? It's completely slipped my brain, and it was damn good. It wasn't as crowded as Saturday nights, and it was a hell of a lot of fun! Work on Friday hurt though .
  14. Boys with toys getting to feel cool.
  15. Live closer to work to free up time? Cycle to work a couple of times a week?
  16. I'm counting two, maybe three people that read your post, as opposed to just giving their own canopy progressions . For what it's worth, my (inexperienced) thoughts: - Start on student canopies (Manta etc.) - A couple of hundred jumps on a Spectre/Tri/Sabre2/Pilot/Safire2 at about 1.0 - Many hundreds of jumps on various sizes of Safire2/Sabre2/Nitro/etc to get to 1.5 wingloading or a 120 size. - Crossfire2 or Katana for as long as it takes. - FX/VX/Velo if and when you're ready. Thoughts?

  18. Bloody Americans, forcing their standards on an international board ! Punctuation marks belong outside the quotation marks, unless they form part of the quote, or the quote forms the entire sentence. However, with respect to icons/emoticons/smileys on dz.com, I vote that they be considered as modifiers to a sentence, and therefore belong prior to the deliniating period. /pedant

Have you tasted the Carslberg or Kronenbourg brewed in the UK? Filth isn't too strong a word, especially when you know just how nice their continental cousins are.
