Vatican vows to expel stem cell scientists from Church

Does anyone expect anything sensible to come from an organization that does everything possible to protect child molesters? If I were raised chatholic, I'd run as far as possible from these people. Hinchey - Rohrabacher Bill fails allowing prosecution of the ill
freethefly replied to freethefly's topic in Speakers Corner
I heard one politician say that passing this would send the "wrong message to the children that drugs are okay". Yet, pumping a patient full of narcotics that leaves them bedridden seems to be okay with them. Shoving Ritalin down a childs throat is okay with them. Putting ill people in prison is okay with them. At this point, I cannot see any need for separate states as states have zero rights to conduct their business as the majority feels. Federal involvement on state rights smashes any hopes for a true democracy. House OKs Medical Pot Prosecutions Posted by CN Staff on June 28, 2006 at 16:56:04 PT By Andrew Taylor, Associated Press Writer Source: Associated Press Washington, DC -- The House on Wednesday voted to continue to allow federal prosecution of those who smoke marijuana for medical purposes in states with laws that permit it. A year ago, the Supreme Court ruled that the federal government can prosecute medical marijuana users, even when state laws allow doctor-prescribed use of the drug. By a 259-163 vote, the House again turned down an amendment that would have blocked the Justice Department from prosecuting people in the 11 states with such medical marijuana laws. Advocates say medical marijuana use is the only way that many chronically ill people, such as AIDS and cancer patients, can relieve their symptoms. The vote came as the House debated a $59.8 billion bill covering the departments of Commerce, Justice and State. "If the voters have seen to it and a doctor agrees, it's a travesty for the government to intercede ... to get in the way of someone using something to alleviate their suffering," said Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Calif. "This is something that should be left to the states as American tradition dictates." "Marijuana is not harmless as some claim," said Rep. Tom Latham, R-Iowa. "Marijuana continues to be the most widely abused drug in the United States." Opponents of the amendment said Marinol, a government-approved prescription drug that contains the active ingredient in marijuana, offers comparable relief for pain and nausea. (I have used Marinol in the past. It sometimes took up to 4 hours before it took effect, if it worked at all. John, the information is at Chris's website. I provided a link as he can convey the message far greater than I can as he lived through the abuse. http://www.building-block.org/ This is not an advertisement for our business and we are not looking to get rich from this as a large portion of sales will go directly to organizations that are honest in their intentions. Jacqueline directed me to Building - Block and suggested that we work with them. She her self is a survivor of a kidnapping and rape and has known Chris for a number of years and she does work closely with him and his organization. My own personal agenda is HIV/AIDS awarness. I truely hope that what Jacqueline and I are doing will make a difference. I hope that each and every person can stop and think of what it is that they can do to bring about change. Whether it is child abuse, HIV/AIDS, all forms of cancer, domestic violence, street crimes, gang violence, ect... only by being active does change happen. How often have you read of an injustice and have said "Someone should do something". Why pass the buck when you can do something. You can post links. You can talk about it with family, friends, neighbors and co-workers. The only thing that does nothing is to do nothing. Be active in securing a better world for your children and their future children. Get involved. "...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." http://www.building-block.org/Priorities.html Whether or not you have children of your own, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY!!! (sorry for the shout, sometimes you have to speak loud if you wish to be heard). These people know what they are talking about as they are survivors of abuse and the system that allowed it. Their goal is to make this the number one priority and to bring about change so that other children will not have to suffer. Your own child, the child next door, a child across town may be suffering without your knowledge. There is a way to end abuse and it requires your attention and devotion. I honestly hope that you get involved. If you are not in America, get involved with a child advocay group where you live as this IS a global problem that has been hushed for too long. Hillary Clinton is right that "It takes a village to raise a child". Put your politics aside and do what is right. Make this planet a better place. Hope you learn something. Right on! We are in the developmental stage at this time. I will be doing some designs tomorrow for Building Block and hope to run them on their approval of the designs. Jacqueline is doing a benefit with the Kottonmouth Kings (I am amazed at who she knows) next week and will be promoting our cause at that concert. I will be rearanging my own website to reflect community involvement and a percentage of everything we sell will go directly to community organizations such as Building Block. I had absolutely no idea it was this bad untill I talked to Jacqueline and she directed my to Largen's website, Building Block. I have never really felt a need to get involved in much untill I read Jacqueline's story and even more so now that we have been talking. Some people just inspire others and I am so impressed with what she does. She is an amazing and inspiring woman. I just got off of the phone with Jacqueline Patterson (I posted 2 articles about her awhile back), an extremely amazing woman, we have joined together (my embroidery business and her connections) to create a new business that will get both of us off of disability while also providing much needed funding for some very important organizations that are truely geared towards real change in our communities. Our venture is in embellished apparel that conveys a message of involvement in our communities. Our concerns are child abuse, HIV/AIDS awarness, violence, drug abuse, medical cannabis and all other concerns that affects the communities that we live in. Building Blocks is an organization that was started by Christopher Largen, a survivor of child abuse. Jacqueline has been working with him and promoting this cause for some time now. We hope to be able to provide funding to further his message by being able to sell apparel with his message. PLEASE!!!!! follow the link to Building Blocks and read what is written there. http://www.building-block.org/ Hope you learn something! I sort of like this idea. Forced labor for illegals
freethefly replied to akarunway's topic in Speakers Corner
Unbelievable. This guy is related to the Great Barry Goldwater? Seems that this country is on a fast slide to the bowels of hell and determined to get there as quick as possible. Walls around the borders. Forced labor to build it. How about some real solutions. The Bush administrations "guest worker program" sounds promising. It needs fine tuning but, it is doable. Placing an "iron curtian" on the border and forcing people to build it echos of Europe. I can hear the future plead of a Russian president saying "Mr. _______ , tear this wall down." Strive for peace and cooperaton, not war and alienation. "...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." Neil Young -
Thanks for posting this, Mike. I have been watching some of these studies for some time. It seems that a large number of these trials do fail but, even the failures lead to something that is usefull. I was on Sustiva in early 2001. It did work for awhile but quickly failed. Side effects from Sustiva was far worst than the AZT. Extremely vivid nightmares, constant nausea and diahrea (it would be several hours before I could even consider leaving the house in the morning due to this). I took Sustiva in combination with Retonavir (brand name Norvir), Epivir and Zidovudine. On top of those were another handful of pills to combat the side effects. In all, I swallowed around 40 pills a day. If I ever get back on meds, one pill a day would be a godsend. Something to consider, next time you meet someone and it looks as if you might end up in bed. http://www.projinf.org/ Hope you learn something. Groundbreaking New Zealand case on HIV disclosure
freethefly replied to Flying-Wench's topic in Speakers Corner
Unless you have positive (no pun intended) proof, I am assuming that your story is hearsay. I, on the otherhand have been involved in HIV/AIDS awarness since 1995 and I have heard this tale a number of times. Myth. Welcome to the World of AIDS Dateline: 05/21/98 Nothing is safe any more! Have a few drinks at a bar, you wake up without your kidneys. Flash your headlights at a passing car, gang members open fire on you in a drive-by initiation rite. Now, it appears, you can't even go to the movies without putting your life at risk – this according to the latest email scare story making the rounds. Read on... Warning - MUST READ Be careful the next time you go to a cinema. These people could be anywhere!! An experience of a friend of my brother's wife left me speechless. Please do send this out to everyone you know. This incident occurred in Bombay's Metro cinema (Among the best in town). They were a group of 6-7 College girls & they went to the theater to see a movie. During the show one of the girls felt a slight pinprick but did not pay much attention to it. After sometime that place began to itch. So she scratched herself and then saw a bit of blood on her hands. She assumed that she had caused it. At the end of the show, her friend noticed a sticker on her dress and read the caption. It read "Welcome to the world of AIDS". She tried to pass it off as a practical joke but when she went for a blood test a couple of weeks later (just to be sure), she found herself HIV Positive. When she complained to the cops, they mentioned that her story was one of the many such cases they had received. It seems the operator uses a syringe to transfer a bit of his/her infected blood to the person sitting ahead of him/her. A horrible experience for the victim as also the family & friends. The WORST bit is that the person who does it gains NOTHING where as the victim loses EVERYTHING. So, be careful... Welcome to the world of urban folklore. What you've just read is a legend in the classic style; more precisely, a new variant of a popular tale from the mid-1980s known as "AIDS Mary." The AIDS Mary legend was first documented nearly ten years ago by folklorist Jan Harold Brunvand in his book, "Curses! Broiled Again!" (W.W. Norton, 1989). At that time, Brunvand noted that a familiar scenario had been cropping up in slightly different forms around the world since about 1987. It usually took the form of a cautionary tale: after a night of casual sex with a woman he doesn't know, a man wakes up the next morning to find the words "Welcome to the world of AIDS" scrawled in lipstick on his bathroom mirror. Supposedly, the woman had contracted the fatal disease from a previous lover and sworn to pass it on to every man she could seduce. (For more on the earlier form of the legend, see AIDS Mary, by Barbara Mikkelson.) In the 1998 version the original punch line is retained, but the story has taken a decidedly darker and creepier turn. No longer are the victims culpable for their plight. It's not careless sex with a stranger that seals their doom, it's simply a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Innocent people are randomly chosen for infection by anonymous villains — AIDS by stealth injection. The same scenario is played out in another recent variant, also circulating by email: Subject: Important message from Al (SERIOUS) This could be life or death for somebody. There are these gangs running around Britain sticking HIV-infected needles into people and then handing them a card/leaflet reading 'Welcome To The World of HIV'. This is not a joke or an urban myth, it's actually happened to somebody Fi (the woman whose e-mail I'm using) knows. They've been seen in Brighton and in Crawley, and last night they were active in The Gallery. So you can understand why I'm more than a little anxious about this. Any of us could have been in the Gallery last night, and most of us were planning to go. The idea of this happening to anybody I care about gives me the shits, hence the warning. I'm not trying to scare anybody or make anybody paranoid, but please, be careful and maybe don't go clubbing for a few days. Christ knows you won't be missing much. This is not a joke. Please forward this. Reply to the address I'm sending this from if you have questions - she's the one who told me about it. These people don't just operate in clubs, they operate on the street, while you're shopping, anywhere, so being paranoid probably isn't the answer. But please, take care. This IS happening and I couldn't take it if it happened to you. Cheers, Al. Urban legends are often called "friend of a friend" tales because the information presented in them is hearsay, typically credited to a thirdhand source. Both of the present examples adhere to this formula. "An experience of a friend of my brother's wife left me speechless," writes the author of the Bombay version (who is anything but speechless). "This is not a joke or an urban myth, " the author of the British version pleads, "it's actually happened to somebody Fi (the woman whose e-mail I'm using) knows." None of the factual claims made in these stories are corroborated with evidence. Some are downright ludicrous — for example, the claim made in the Bombay version that the victim got a blood test "a couple of weeks" after the incident and was found to be HIV-positive. That's highly unlikely. The incubation period before detectable antibodies appear after exposure to HIV is typically four to eight weeks, often longer. There's also the improbable claim that police told a victim that hers was only "one of the many such cases they had received." If that's so, why hasn't the press taken an interest? One would think that multiple instances of HIV infection caused by hypodermic-wielding thugs in two countries would have incited a full-tilt media frenzy by now, but reputable news organizations evidently don't find it credible. Maybe they're all just waiting for Matt Drudge to break the story. "...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." Neil Young -

Let's push for a law that would OUTLAW all these things. Skydiving can kill or injure you. Let's push for a law to OUTLAW skydiving. ANYTHING that may possibly harm a person should be outlawed. Screw personal choice. The government knows better than any one individual. We are but a bunch of freaking idiots and ONLY the government knows what is good for us. Your next skydive may be your last. Let's hope that this potential danger is taken from the idiots who wish to harm themselves by jumping from aircraft. It is only for your own good that the government should ban it. If a government wants to impose a zero tolerance policy, then do it across the board. Trace amount of alcohol on a persons breath, regardless if it is just from mouthwash, then off to jail you go. No questions asked. Drive a car with ANY AMOUNT of alcohol in your body, you are impaired. ZERO TOLERANCE. Personaly, I think that the alcohol industry should be shut down. It is one of the top killers in the world. Alcohol for ANY use, regardless, should be outlawed. ZERO TOLERANCE. Again, any activity that may poise a threat to your well being should be outlawed. Why should the insurance industry be burdened by people who slam the ground in a low turn. OUTLAW LOW TURNS. Better yet outlaw jumping completely and avoid the low turn possibility thus saving the insurance industry thousands of dollars. Smoking mj is much safer than jumping. There is no known relation to detrimental health consequences related to mj. Mj is well on it's way to legalization for medical use as well as recreational use. If you do not like it, don't use it. Let individuals decide for themselves. I am well aware of the danger of skydiving yet, it is my choice. Not that of another who is appalled that a person would put themself at such a risk. Freedom is personal choice to do what in no way affect another. (I actually do not think that alcohol should be banned. Drink if you want. It does nothing for me and it is my choice not to drink. Just do not drive if you choose to do so.) I am armed with the facts. http://www.norml.org/index.cfm?Group_ID=3376 You shore up a flimsy defence with rhetoric. The facts contained in my post are from the U.S. Government and 5000 years of documented history. http://www.jackherer.com/chapters.html Marijuana/Hemp is the worlds most versatile plant. One acre of hemp equates four acres of trees. Unlike alcohol (includes beer) and narcotics (marijuana is not a narcotic) no one has ever died of an overdose. Marijuana has unlimited medical value. I personally can attest to this as it has helped me to keep some weight on my body. It has been more than one week since I have smoked. I have not eaten in nearly 7 days. No desire to eat at this time. If I were to smoke, I'd be eating. Skydiving is astronomicaly more dangerous than smoking marijuana. Should it be outlawed? If it were, would you still jump if you thought that you could do so without being detected? I suggest that you follow the links at Jack Herer's website and get the facts. Hope you learn something. COURT: TRACE OF POT IS ENOUGH by Patrick Sullivan, (Source:Traverse City Record-Eagle) Regional News 22 Jun 2006 Michigan ------- Motorists Can Be Charged Even If Not Intoxicated TRAVERSE CITY -- Any trace of marijuana in a driver's blood could mean stiff penalties after a crash if someone is injured and killed, even if the driver was not impaired, a sharply divided state Supreme Court ruled. The decision came after the court considered two cases, including a Grand Traverse County case of a woman who lost control of her sport utility vehicle in snowy conditions on M-72 and crashed into a car. The crash killed a passenger in the car and left two girls, then 10 and 11 years old, paralyzed. Delores Marie Derror faces charges of operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs causing death and three charges of causing serious injury. In a reversal of a Court of Appeals decision that came last year, the Supreme Court in a 4-3 decision found that a metabolite of THC -- the psychoactive substance in marijuana -- found in a driver's blood is enough to support the charges, even though the THC metabolite does not indicate intoxication. In a decision written by Justice Maura D. Corrigan and signed by justices Clifford W. Taylor, Robert P. Young, Jr., and Stephen J. Markman, the court found that the Legislature's intent was to criminalize driving with any amount of a schedule 1 controlled substance in a person's body. "It is irrelevant that a person who is no longer 'under the influence' of marijuana could be prosecuted under the statute," Corrigan wrote. "If the Legislature had intended to prosecute only people who were under the influence while driving, it could have written the statute accordingly." Grand Traverse County Prosecutor Alan Schneider said he was pleased the issue has been finally resolved. "The THC metabolite was an ... issue that had not been addressed before, so our obligation was to litigate it fully and take it to the highest court and let them make a decision," he said. "Now we will go back to where we were and it will be set for a trial." The dissenting opinion, written by Justice Michael F. Cavanagh and signed by justices Elizabeth A. Weaver and Marilyn Kelly, called the majority's interpretation unconstitutional. "This means that weeks, months, and even years after marijuana was ingested, and long after any risk of impairment has passed, a person cannot drive a car without breaking the law if a test can detect the presence of 11-carboxy-THC," Cavanagh wrote. So, you should beware if you go to a rock concert where there may be (GASP!!) people smoking pot. That passive intake will land a non-user behind bars. There is no fighting it. You are guilty. How many of you non-users have been around when people are smoking? The slightest trace in your system and it is off to jail you go. You have no defence. Drunk drivers have a better chance of getting off than a non-user of mj with trace amount of a non-psychoactive metabolite. What it really boils down to is the "Reefer Madness" mentality of an overzealous government that spends 3/4 of its "Drug War" budget directly on mj. If a person is, in fact, intoxicated, charge them accordingly. HOW DANGEROUS IS MARIJUANA COMPARED WITH OTHER SUBSTANCES? Number of American deaths per year that result directly or primarily from the following selected causes nationwide, according to World Almanacs, Life Insurance Actuarial (death) Rates, and the last 20 years of U.S. Surgeon Generals' reports. LOWEST TOXICITY 100% of the studies done at dozens of American universities and research facilities show pot toxicity does not exist. UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE Drug Enforcement Administration In The Matter Of MARIJUANA RESCHEDULING PETITION Docket No. 86-22 OPINION AND RECOMMENDED RULING, FINDINGS OF FACT, CONCLUSIONS OF LAW AND DECISION OF ADMINISTRATIVE LAW JUDGE FRANCIS L. YOUNG, Administrative Law Judge DATED: SEPTEMBER 6, 1988 Section 8 of Judge Young's "Findings of Fact, Conclusions of Law and Decision." Page 56 & 57 http://mojo.calyx.net/~olsen/MEDICAL/YOUNG/young 3. The most obvious concern when dealing with drug safety is the possibility of lethal effects. Can the drug cause death? 4. Nearly all medicines have toxic, potentially lethal effects. But marijuana is not such a substance. There is no record in the extensive medical literature describing a proven, documented cannabis-induced fatality. This is a remarkable statement. First, the record on marijuana encompasses 5,000 years of human experience. Second, marijuana is now used daily by enormous numbers of people throughout the world. Estimates suggest that from twenty million to fifty million Americans routinely, albeit illegally, smoke marijuana without the benefit of direct medical supervision. Yet, despite this long history of use and the extraordinarily high numbers of social smokers, there are simply no credible medical reports to suggest that consuming marijuana has caused a single death. 6. By contrast aspirin, a commonly used, over-the-counter medicine, causes hundreds of deaths each year. 7. Drugs used in medicine are routinely given what is called an LD-50. The LD-50 rating indicates at what dosage fifty percent of test animals receiving a drug will die as a result of drug induced toxicity. A number of researchers have attempted to determine marijuana's LD-50 rating in test animals, without success. Simply stated, researchers have been unable to give animals enough marijuana to induce death. 8. At present it is estimated that marijuana's LD-50 is around 1:20,000 or 1:40,000. In layman terms this means that in order to induce death a marijuana smoker would have to consume 20,000 to 40,000 times as much marijuana as is contained in one marijuana cigarette. NIDA-supplied marijuana cigarettes weigh approximately .9 grams. A smoker would theoretically have to consume nearly 1,500 pounds of marijuana within about fifteen minutes to induce a lethal response. 9. In practical terms, marijuana cannot induce a lethal response as a result of drug-related toxicity. "...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." I can agree with shoulder length for men, as long as it also applies to women. I see it as an equal rights issue. What applies to one gender should also apply to the other. An issue concerning hair is just silly. If long hair poses a safety concern (caught in moving machinery, fire hazard, food preperation...) there are measures that can correct these hazards. Before and after working in the NDT industry, I was a welder. I kept my hair under my skullcap. Food workers must wear caps that keep hair from falling into food. In the factory that worked in a few years back it was a requirement that long hair be kept in a manner which kept it free from entering machinery. Is it a safety concern of your employer that hair be kept no longer than the shoulders? I believe that we all can agree on safety issue that protects the employee has well as the employer. What I cannot agree on is an employer who wishes to force their own version on how men should look as well as women when that is the only issue and has no bearing on how it affects safety or the job in general. No, I am not fishing. It is a serious question. I worked for a good number of years as a UX/EMI rail inspector and my hair was to the middle of my back for a good while. It did not affect my ability to perform my job and the company nor any of the railroads I inspected have a problem with it. Why would they? If they were to have fired me for my hair, I would had quickly gone to an attorney and had filed a discrimination suit. Maybe buzzcuts were the norm in the 1950's but this is not the 1950's. Companies cannot simply fire someone based on their appearance. People have rights. If long hair is not allowed on men then the same should apply to women. If long hair is allowed for women then the same should apply to men. As for Six Flags do you think that any of the patrons to the park really care how someone wears their hair? Does the same policy apply to women with long hair. If not. Why? What is the difference? He should had filed a discrimination suit. "...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." Neil Young

Concern over N Korea missile test N Korea has already proved it has missiles, by publicly testing them Japan will use weekend talks with North Korea to ask about reports the North has been preparing a missile test. US and South Korean intelligence has picked up signs a test may be planned, though Japan's Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi said the chances seemed low. "It is necessary to find out what is going on," said Japan's chief cabinet secretary, Hiroyuki Hosoda. The talks in Beijing will focus on the issue of missing Japanese which North Korea is believed to have kidnapped. Rumours of a possible North Korean missile test have been circulating for several days, though South Korean and Japanese officials have played down the threat, saying troop build-ups around missile sites were probably just military exercises.
